Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Shadows at the Summit

The Azure Mountains stood like silent sentinels, their peaks cloaked in a swirling mist that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Yuto, Nyssa, and Lira climbed steadily, their breaths visible in the cold, thin air. The path wound steeply upward, littered with jagged rocks and patches of ice.

The trio moved cautiously, their senses on high alert. Every sound—the crunch of their boots on gravel, the occasional skittering of loose stones—seemed amplified in the oppressive silence.

"We're getting close," Lira said, her silver staff glowing faintly. "I can feel it. The corruption is stronger here."

Nyssa, her twin blades strapped securely to her back, scanned the surrounding cliffs. "Let's hope we don't run into another one of those guardians. The last one nearly killed us."

Yuto didn't respond. His golden eyes were fixed on the path ahead, his mind racing with thoughts of the battle to come. The closer they got to the summit, the heavier the air felt, as if the mountain itself were pressing down on them.

---

By midday, they reached a plateau. The flat expanse was eerily quiet, the only sound the whisper of wind through the crags. In the center of the plateau stood a massive stone archway, its surface carved with runes that glowed faintly with a dark, pulsating light.

"This must be it," Lira said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Yuto stepped forward, his sword drawn. "Stay close. Whatever's on the other side of this... we face it together."

As they approached the archway, the air around them grew colder, and a low hum filled the air. Shadows began to coalesce at the base of the arch, forming into the shape of a figure.

The figure stepped forward, its features obscured by a dark, flowing cloak. Its voice was cold and resonant, echoing across the plateau.

"You dare to challenge the will of the Darkness?" it said. "Fools. You will meet the same fate as those who came before you."

"We're not afraid of you," Nyssa said, her blades gleaming in the dim light.

The figure chuckled, a sound devoid of warmth. "Bravery without strength is nothing more than folly."

It raised a hand, and the shadows around it surged forward, taking the form of twisted creatures with glowing red eyes.

---

The battle was immediate and brutal. Yuto charged into the fray, his sword blazing with golden light as he cut through the shadow creatures. Nyssa and Lira fought beside him, their attacks precise and unrelenting.

The shadowy figure watched from the edge of the battlefield, its form shifting and flickering.

"You fight well," it said, its tone almost mocking. "But this is only the beginning."

It raised both hands, and the ground beneath them began to tremble. More shadows erupted from the earth, forming a massive, writhing beast that towered over the plateau. Its eyes burned with an intense crimson light, and its roar shook the very mountain.

"Focus on the summoner!" Yuto shouted, deflecting a blow from one of the smaller creatures. "If we take him down, the rest will fall!"

Nyssa nodded, leaping into the air with her blades spinning. She aimed for the shadowy figure, her strikes a blur of steel and light. But her blades passed through its form as if it were made of mist.

"It's a projection!" Lira called out, her staff glowing brightly as she unleashed a blast of silver light.

Yuto's mind raced. If the figure was a projection, then the true enemy was somewhere nearby. He closed his eyes, focusing his senses. He felt it—a faint pulse of energy coming from the cliffs above them.

"There!" he shouted, pointing to a ledge overlooking the plateau.

Nyssa and Lira followed his gaze, and together they launched an all-out assault on the ledge. Lira's staff sent waves of silver energy crashing into the rocks, while Nyssa's blades cut through the air with deadly precision.

The true figure of the summoner was revealed, its form cloaked in dark armor etched with glowing red runes. It snarled, raising its hand to summon another wave of shadows.

But Yuto was faster. He leaped onto the ledge, his sword glowing with golden light. With a roar, he brought the blade down, cutting through the summoner's defenses.

The summoner let out a cry of pain, its form flickering and destabilizing.

"No!" it hissed. "You cannot stop what has already begun!"

With one final strike, Yuto shattered the summoner's form. The shadows on the plateau dissolved into mist, and the oppressive weight in the air lifted.

---

As the trio stood on the now-silent plateau, the stone archway began to glow brighter, its runes shifting and realigning.

"This isn't over," Lira said, her voice grim. "The source of the Darkness is still ahead."

Yuto nodded, his grip on his sword tightening. "Then we keep going. No matter what."

Together, they stepped through the archway, ready to face the heart of the Darkness and the final battle that awaited them.
