Chapter 2 - The Black Figure

Aaron and Sam sat in front of Lieutenant Mike in his office. "Well done my boys, according to our reports the three terrorists you eradicated this morning were the ones responsible for the attack on the politicians." Sam smiled, "well sir we made sure to stay on guard until the next party came and that's when we spot them." Aaron gave him a look but Sam ignored. Aaron spoke up, "I tried to stop the last one from killing himself but he won't just listen." "Well, they died, the same day when they choose to pick up that gun," reasoned Lieutenant Mike. "Good he blasted the house, no more hiding spot for other terrorists," laughed Sam. Aaron and Lieutenant Mike starred at Sam and then they both too burst out laughing.

Lieutenant Mike gets up and starts to show pictures hung on a board. These pictures show the terrorist shooting at the Politicians in a public meeting. Aaron and Sam spot the three terrorists that they killed today morning. Mike points at the pictures, "the terrorist could attack this meeting because they were already in the village. We were focused on securing the roads and the borders, but these sneaky bastards were in the village, way before the meeting was announced. They were hiding in the village for an opportunity and they got one. And we found out where and who gave them shelter".

Mike points to another board with satellite images of the village. He places his finger at a cluster of homes, "This is where they came from. It's a crowded residential area. It was easy for them to hide here. The owner deals with a local bakery but that's not his only business. And he never leaves his house. He seems to have some connection with the Taliban. He keeps a low profile but don't hesitate to kill him if there is any threat to you or the civilians. Our mission is incomplete if we he walks free. Get in and get out as smoothly as possible. We are not expecting any heavy fires."

Aaron and Sam saluted the Lieutenant and left from his office. They both needed some sleep after the mission this morning and they had one more operation tonight. It was hot as hell in the bunkers. Aaron set an alarm for ten pm in his wrist watch. And then dipped one of his shirts into water and covered his face with it as he lay down. The damp cloth gave some coolness and darkness for Aaron to sleep. In no time Aaron was in deep sleep. Beep-Beep-Beep Aaron woke up and turned off the alarm. "How can it already be ten, I feel like I slept only for some minutes," Aaron muttered to himself.

Aaron waked up Sam and they both got suited up for the mission. The helmet the, the Kevlar, the gun loaded, ammo packed up. It was a bumpy ride; good roads were not the prime concern here. The Humvee drove speedily towards the dark, unlit village. It was dusty but Aaron kept the windows open for the cold wind. Sam was driving and Aaron checked the path. They were almost there, Sam took a speedy turn and saw a figure clad in black, just ahead. Sam instantly pressed the breaks.

The Humvee jolted to a halt inches away from the black figure.

"What the hell," Shouted Aaron. The black figure lifted her dark veil and revealed a beautiful face. Her eyes were crystal blue. An oasis in this desert. Aaron was distracted. He couldn't take away his eyes from her. Whether it was the big moon reflecting in her eyes or she had two moons in her eyes of her own, it was hard to tell. "Are you, crazy lady, get out of my way?" yelled Sam. Aaron spoke more softly, "She can't understand you Sam, don't yell!" Sam glanced at Aaron; he has never been considerate of the locals before. He was taught to be weary of them all. To not believe anything they said and obviously not stare them in awe. "Aaron?" inquired Sam again, shaking him out of his dreamy state.

Aaron regained his sense and made his tough look face. He got down from the vehicle but kept his hand on his rifle. "Get out of our way," Aaron said with big hand gestures so that the girl could understand him. "Don't go in there, it's a trap," said the girl in a hushed but silky tone. "Good, you understand us. Now please leave, this place is not safe," said Aaron with a tough voice. "This is a trap, you have been set up," pleaded the girl again. Aaron took out a handcuff from his pocket, cuffed the girl and locked her in the Humvee. "You are making a mistake," the girl yelled banging her cuffed hand against the door.

"Do you believe her?" asked Sam. "No! Some new diversion technique, I guess. Let's carry ahead on foot, we don't want any attention," said Aaron. As they went ahead the single alley spread itself into a maze of two and three storied wooden houses. All the doors and windows were closed. Lieutenant Mike had chosen this hour to minimize any threat to the locals. It was a simple mission get in an ordinary house, arrest one man, kill him if he resists and back to base. But that's not how it was going to be.

Aaron lit a small torch and checked the papers from his packet again, they were standing in front of the house that had sheltered the terrorist. The house was nothing special it was just like the others in the alley. Aaron was about to break the door, when a loud horn and blaring lights hijacked his attention. He turned to see the girl in black driving the Humvee straight towards him. The girl had no intention of stopping she was driving straight to the door Aaron and Sam were currently standing it.
