Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Gala's Stage

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel shimmered with elegance, the chandeliers casting golden light over the gathering of the city's elite. The air was filled with the hum of conversation and the clinking of champagne glasses as socialites, business moguls, and journalists mingled.

Sebastian Kane's charity gala was a masterstroke of strategy. While the public believed it to be an event to support underprivileged youth, Sebastian and Chloe knew its true purpose: to draw out their enemy.

The Guests Arrive

Chloe descended the sweeping staircase of the ballroom, her floor-length sapphire gown hugging her figure perfectly. She exuded confidence, but beneath her composed exterior, tension simmered. Her eyes scanned the room, noting familiar faces and strangers alike.

Sebastian met her at the base of the stairs, his tailored tuxedo immaculate. He offered her a glass of champagne, leaning close to murmur, "How are we looking?"

"Dominic says everything's set," Chloe whispered back. "Security's in place, and we've got surveillance on every entry point."

Sebastian nodded, his gaze sharp as it swept the room. "Good. Now we wait."

An Unexpected Guest

The night progressed without incident, but Chloe couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Every laugh, every whispered conversation seemed amplified, as though the room itself was holding its breath.

Then, a hush fell over the crowd as a man entered the ballroom. Chloe's heart skipped a beat when she recognized him.

"Leonard Chase," she whispered, clutching Sebastian's arm.

Sebastian's jaw tightened. "Right on time."

Chase, dressed in an ill-fitting suit, looked out of place among the glamorous attendees. His eyes darted nervously around the room, but he straightened his shoulders as he approached Sebastian and Chloe.

"Sebastian Kane," Chase said, his voice dripping with contempt. "You've certainly outdone yourself."

Sebastian's smile was razor-sharp. "Leonard. I wasn't expecting you."

Chase chuckled darkly. "Oh, I'm sure you weren't. But then again, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see the great Sebastian Kane pretending to care about charity."

Chloe stepped forward, her voice firm. "Why are you here, Leonard?"

Chase's eyes flicked to her, his expression hardening. "You'll find out soon enough, Mrs. Kane."

Before Sebastian could respond, Chase turned on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.

The First Strike

Sebastian immediately signaled to Dominic through his earpiece.

"Keep eyes on Chase," he ordered.

"Already on it," Dominic replied. "He's heading toward the service corridor. I'll have Marcus intercept him."

Chloe grabbed Sebastian's arm. "This is it, isn't it? He's here to do something."

Sebastian nodded, his expression grim. "Stay with the guests. I'll handle this."

Chloe frowned but didn't argue. She knew better than to distract him when the stakes were this high.

---

A Dangerous Discovery

Sebastian followed Marcus through the back halls of the ballroom, the muted sounds of the gala fading behind them. They moved quickly and silently, their footsteps echoing off the tiled floors.

"Chase went this way," Marcus whispered, pointing toward a stairwell.

As they descended into the basement, the air grew colder. They found Chase standing near a utility panel, a small device in his hand.

"Leonard," Sebastian called out, his voice low and menacing.

Chase flinched but didn't turn around. "You shouldn't have come, Kane. This isn't for you."

Sebastian stepped closer. "You're making a mistake."

Chase finally turned, his face pale but resolute. "The mistake was thinking you could destroy me and get away with it."

Before Sebastian could respond, Chase pressed a button on the device. The lights flickered, and a low hum filled the air.

---

Chloe in the Crossfire

Upstairs, Chloe felt the shift immediately. The chandeliers flickered, and the music cut out. Gasps rippled through the crowd as the room was plunged into semi-darkness.

Dominic's voice crackled in Chloe's earpiece. "Chloe, we've got a situation. The building's security system is compromised."

"What does that mean?" Chloe asked, her heart racing.

"It means someone has access to everything—locks, cameras, alarms. They could do anything."

Chloe's breath hitched as she realized the full extent of the danger. "Sebastian's downstairs with Chase."

"Stay put," Dominic ordered. "I'll send someone to get you."

But Chloe wasn't one to sit idly by. She slipped out of the ballroom, moving quickly toward the service corridor.

The Explosive Truth

In the basement, Sebastian lunged at Chase, knocking the device from his hand. The two men struggled, their movements clumsy in the dim light.

"You don't understand!" Chase shouted. "I'm not the one you should be fighting!"

Sebastian pinned Chase against the wall, his voice a growl. "Then who is it? Who's behind this?"

Chase hesitated, fear flashing in his eyes. "They're always watching. You'll never stop them."

Before Sebastian could press further, the sound of a timer beeped from the discarded device.

Marcus grabbed it, his eyes widening. "It's rigged to the power grid. If it goes off, the whole building—"

Chloe burst into the room just as Marcus began to disarm the device.

"Sebastian!" she cried, rushing toward him.

"Chloe, get out of here!" Sebastian shouted.

But it was too late. The timer hit zero, and a deafening explosion rocked the building.

---

The Fallout

The blast wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been, but it was enough to cause chaos. Smoke filled the basement, and the fire alarms blared. Sebastian shielded Chloe as debris rained down around them.

"Everyone out!" Marcus yelled, dragging Chase toward the exit.

Sebastian held Chloe close, his mind racing. This wasn't just a warning—it was a declaration of war.

As they emerged into the cool night air, Sebastian made a silent vow.

Whoever was behind this had just made their final mistake.
