### Chapter 2
Kieran's return to Hallowshade was far from the triumphant celebration he had imagined. The villagers, once warm and familiar, now regarded him with a mix of awe and unease. Nyx, the shadowfang, walked silently beside him, its sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. Kieran could feel its wariness through their bond, a constant hum of tension at the back of his mind.
It was rare for anyone to bond with a shadowfang, and rarer still for someone as young as Kieran to survive the experience. Whispers followed him as he passed, and he couldn't tell if they were born of admiration or fear.
"He did it," someone murmured.
"A shadowfang? That's unnatural…"
"Maybe he's cursed, like his father."
The mention of his father sent a pang of anger and sadness through Kieran. He tightened his grip on the binding amulet around his neck and quickened his pace toward Elder Thalos's hut.

#### Inside the Elder's Hut
Elder Thalos, an aged man with a long silver beard and piercing eyes, was waiting for him. The room smelled of herbs and old parchment, and the walls were lined with shelves filled with ancient tomes and jars of strange ingredients.
"So, the boy returns… alive," Thalos said, his voice gruff but tinged with relief. His gaze flickered to Nyx, who stood protectively at Kieran's side. "A shadowfang. I never would have expected that."
"Neither did I," Kieran admitted, glancing at Nyx. "The bond... it feels strong, but something about it is different. Nyx is different."
Thalos nodded slowly and gestured for Kieran to sit. "The Rite of Bonding is unique to each tamer. But bonding with a shadowfang is no ordinary feat. They are creatures of immense power and mystery, tied to the Keeper's will more closely than most. Tell me everything."
Kieran recounted the events of the glade—the pulsing stone, the beast's challenge, and the connection he felt when the bond was formed. As he spoke, Thalos listened intently, his expression growing more serious.
"When the shadowfang gave you its name, Nyx, it marked you as something more than its master. You are its equal—a Keeper of the bond, as the ancients once called tamers like you," Thalos said. "This is both a blessing and a burden. Your path will not be easy, Kieran."
"I didn't expect it to be," Kieran replied, determination in his voice. "But what does this mean for me? For Nyx?"
Thalos hesitated, his gaze dropping to the table between them. "It means your destiny is intertwined with something far greater than yourself. And it means the questions you've always asked about your father's disappearance… may finally have answers."

#### The Village Meeting
Later that evening, Thalos called for a gathering in the village square. The tamers and elders sat in a circle around a crackling fire, their faces illuminated by the flames. Kieran stood before them, Nyx at his side, feeling the weight of their gazes.
"Tonight, we witness the return of Kieran, son of the great Tamer Eryndor, and his bond with a shadowfang," Thalos announced, his voice commanding attention. "This bond is a sign—a sign that the Keeper's will is at work in ways we do not yet understand."
The murmurs grew louder. Some villagers nodded in approval, while others looked uneasy. One of the elders, a stern woman named Selvia, stood.
"A shadowfang is not a beast to be trusted," she said, her voice sharp. "Its power is a danger to the village. How can we be sure Kieran can control it? How can we be sure it won't destroy us?"
Nyx growled softly, and Kieran placed a calming hand on its head. "Nyx is bonded to me," he said firmly. "It will not harm anyone unless I will it. If we're going to face what's coming, we'll need every ally we can get—beast or human."
Selvia's gaze softened slightly, but the tension in the air remained thick.

#### A Warning
After the meeting, as Kieran prepared to return home, Thalos pulled him aside.
"There's something you must know," the elder said quietly. "Your father didn't just disappear. He was investigating the Riftlands when he vanished. And the shadowfangs… they are tied to that cursed place."
"The Riftlands?" Kieran asked, his brow furrowing.
"A realm where the Keeper's will falters," Thalos explained. "Beasts born from those lands are stronger, darker, and more dangerous. Nyx may carry traces of that power, and through your bond, so will you. Be careful, Kieran. The answers you seek may come at a great cost."

#### Closing Scene
Kieran lay awake that night, staring at the ceiling of his small home. Nyx lay curled at the foot of his bed, its glowing eyes watching over him. The elder's words replayed in his mind, filling him with both dread and resolve.
He couldn't stop thinking about his father, the Riftlands, and what it meant to be a Keeper. The bond with Nyx was more than he had anticipated, but it also felt right—as though this was the path he was always meant to walk.
"I'll find the truth," he whispered to the darkness. "No matter what it takes."
Nyx rumbled softly in response, their connection humming with quiet understanding. Together, they would face whatever destiny had in store.
