Chereads / Secret Beyond the Veil - Season 1 / Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: "Trials of the Temple"

Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: "Trials of the Temple"

The Forgotten Temple loomed before them, half-hidden by the thick foliage of the ancient forest. Its towering pillars were cracked with age, vines curling around them like nature's reclaiming hands. The air inside was thick with dust and a strange hum of magic, as though the very walls whispered secrets.

Lyra hesitated at the threshold, gripping the shard tightly. The moment she stepped inside, a rush of energy pulsed through her veins, nearly making her stumble.

Kael steadied her with a hand on her arm. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, exhaling slowly. "The shard… it feels stronger here."

Silas peered into the darkness beyond the temple's entrance. "Great. That means this place is either our best chance or our worst nightmare."

Kael shot him a look before stepping forward, his sword drawn. "Stay close. We don't know what we're walking into."

The temple's interior was vast, its ceilings stretching impossibly high, held up by stone columns etched with glowing runes. The light from their torches flickered against the engravings, illuminating figures of past Guardians in battle against shadowy creatures.

Lyra ran her fingers along the carvings. "This place was built for the Guardians… but why does it feel like it's waiting for something?"

A deep rumble echoed through the chamber as if answering her question. The stone beneath their feet trembled, and suddenly, the entrance behind them sealed shut with a resounding boom.

Silas whirled around. "That's not good."

Before anyone could react, the runes on the walls flared to life, and a voice—deep, ancient, and resonant—filled the air.

"The Bearer of the Shard has entered. To claim the knowledge within, the Trials must be faced. Only the worthy shall proceed."

Lyra's breath caught in her throat. "Trials?"

The floor beneath them shifted, and suddenly, the ground split into three separate paths, each leading into a different part of the temple. A force tugged at Lyra, pulling her toward the center path.

Kael grabbed her hand. "Lyra—"

Before he could hold on, an invisible force yanked them apart, sending each of them down a different corridor.

Trial One: The Mirror of Truth (Lyra's Trial)

Lyra stumbled into a vast, circular chamber, its walls lined with mirrors. The moment she looked into one, her reflection twisted and morphed, showing versions of herself she didn't recognize.

A voice echoed from the mirrors. "Who are you, Bearer of the Shard? Do you know your true self?"

One mirror showed her as a powerful sorceress, cloaked in golden light. Another depicted her as a creature of darkness, eyes glowing like the shadows she feared. A third showed her as she was now—uncertain, struggling, afraid.

The reflections stepped out of the mirrors, surrounding her.

"You are weak," the dark version sneered. "Unworthy of the shard's power."

The golden version extended a hand. "But you have potential, if you can embrace it."

Lyra clenched her fists. "I don't need to be told who I am."

She took a deep breath and faced her fears head-on. "I choose to be who I am. Not a puppet of the shard, not a slave to my doubts. Just me."

The mirrors shattered, and the voice whispered, "You have passed."

A doorway opened ahead of her, and she ran through, hoping the others were safe.

Trial Two: The Guardian's Strength (Kael's Trial)

Kael found himself in a narrow, torch-lit corridor lined with statues of past Guardians. Suddenly, the statues moved, stepping forward as ghostly figures emerged from them.

One figure, an elder Guardian, spoke. "A Guardian must be strong, but strength is not only of the body—it is of the heart. Do you fight for power, or do you fight for those you love?"

Kael frowned. "I fight to protect."

The Guardian's eyes glowed. "Then prove it."

The ghosts attacked. Kael fought with everything he had, but no matter how many he struck down, they kept rising. His body ached, his breaths came short.

Then he remembered Lyra's words: "You don't have to do this alone."

Instead of striking, he dropped his sword and opened his arms. "I do not fight alone. I fight for others."

The ghosts halted. The elder Guardian smiled. "You have passed."

A door opened ahead, and Kael sprinted forward.

Trial Three: The Shadow's Temptation (Silas' Trial)

Silas stood in a darkened room, where whispers filled the air. Shadows slithered along the walls, forming into a figure—one that looked exactly like him.

"Why do you follow them?" the shadow asked. "You could have power, wealth, everything you desire."

Silas smirked. "Tempting, but I prefer my freedom."

The shadow chuckled. "Freedom? You're just another piece in their game."

Silas narrowed his eyes. "Maybe. But at least I choose where I stand."

The shadows hissed before retreating. "You have passed."

A door opened, and Silas rushed ahead.

Reunion and the Final Trial

The three paths converged into a grand hall where Lyra, Kael, and Silas reunited.

"You guys okay?" Silas asked, dusting himself off.

Lyra nodded. "Barely."

Before they could catch their breath, a massive stone door at the end of the hall slid open, revealing an altar bathed in golden light.

At its center stood a pedestal, upon which rested an ancient book—the Codex of the Veil.

But just as Lyra stepped forward, the golden light flickered—replaced by an eerie, suffocating darkness. A shape rose from the shadows, its glowing red eyes locking onto them.

"You have come far, Bearer of the Shard… but you will go no further."

The temple shuddered as the entity lunged at them.
