Chereads / Space Mercenary: The Rebirth Chronicles / Chapter 5 - Countdown to Chaos

Chapter 5 - Countdown to Chaos

Ray walked through the corridors, his boots echoing against the metallic floor. As he approached the deck, the sound system crackled to life, and a calm, authoritative voice filled the halls. "Attention, all personnel. We are almost there. Five minutes until arrival. All team members report to the deck. Five minutes to begin the attack."

Ray stopped, closed his eyes, and inhaled deeply. He held the breath for a moment before slowly exhaling. "Alright," he muttered to himself. "This is it. Time to show them what I can do. No messing up. Just focus."

Opening his eyes, he straightened his posture and adjusted the straps on his weapons. With renewed determination, he resumed his walk toward the deck. When he arrived, the doors slid open to reveal the captain and the harem already gathered, their conversation a mix of strategy, teasing, and light-hearted flirting.

Captain Leon stood at the center, his presence commanding yet approachable. "Alright, team, we've gone over the details. Everyone knows their role. Stick to the plan, and we'll get through this smoothly."

Lyra leaned against the wall, twirling a strand of her fiery red hair. "I'll get us in close. Just make sure no one messes up my landing."

"Don't worry," Jade said with a faint smirk, sipping her ever-present tea. "I'll cover you from a distance. You'll have all the time you need to be as reckless as you want."

"Reckless is her middle name," Astrid added with a playful smile. "But it does make things more exciting, doesn't it?"

Lyra rolled her eyes but grinned. "At least I'm not boring."

Mira adjusted her medical pack, her soft voice cutting through the chatter. "Just try not to get yourselves injured too badly, alright? I only have so much med gel, and I'd rather not spend the whole mission patching everyone up."

Leon turned to her, flashing a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Mira. We'll make sure you're not overwhelmed. But it's nice to know you're always ready to take care of us."

Mira blushed faintly, looking down as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Thank you, Captain."

Selene, leaning against the wall in the shadows, added in her calm, detached tone, "If everyone just does their job, Mira won't have to work so hard."

Zara chimed in from her spot near a console, where she was double-checking some equipment. "I've run diagnostics on all the gear. Everything should hold up… unless someone decides to blow something up unnecessarily." She shot a glance at Lyra, who grinned mischievously.

"Blowing things up is kind of my thing," Lyra shot back, winking. "Don't act like it hasn't saved us more than once."

Jade sipped her tea, her calm demeanor unshaken. "Just make sure you don't blow up anything important this time. Like the ship."

Astrid folded her arms, her elegant posture unyielding. "The real key is coordination. As long as we communicate effectively, there's no reason for unnecessary damage or injuries."

Leon chuckled, his charm effortlessly diffusing any tension. "I trust all of you to do what you do best. That's why we're the best team out there."

Zara adjusted her glasses, muttering under her breath, "Flattery doesn't fix broken gear, Captain."

Lyra laughed, nudging Zara playfully. "Come on, Zara. A little flattery never hurt anyone."

"Unless it's distracting," Selene added pointedly, her sharp gaze flicking between Lyra and Leon.

Ray stayed at the back, observing the interactions silently. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides as he listened to the casual banter mixed with serious planning. They're so confident, he thought. They've done this a hundred times. I just need to prove I can keep up.

He shifted slightly, finding a clear space near the wall where he began stretching. His arms reached upward, then out to his sides as he took slow, deliberate breaths. "Calm. Focus," he whispered to himself. "You've trained for this. You've fought tougher battles. Just a different setting. You can do this."

The countdown in his mind ticked closer as the team's conversation continued. The ship's engines hummed, signaling their descent toward the mission site. Ray's breathing remained steady as he visualized the plan, each move replaying in his mind.

Then, the sound system chimed again. "Team, we've arrived. Prepare to deploy."

Ray's eyes opened, his determination solidified. He adjusted the straps on his plasma swords and checked the placement of his laser guns. "Let's do this," he murmured to himself, stepping forward to join the group.

The deck grew quiet as the weight of the mission settled over them. The ship slowed to a halt, the hum of the engines now a faint vibration. Ray's heart raced, but his face remained calm.

The ship descended quietly, its engines humming as it neared the rogue mercenary base. Inside, the team made their final checks. The tension was palpable, each member focused on their role. Ray sat near the back, double-checking his weapons. His plasma swords gleamed faintly, and his laser pistols felt solid in their holsters. This was it—his chance to prove himself.

The sound system crackled. "Team, prepare for deployment. Landing in thirty seconds," came the pilot's calm announcement. Lyra's voice followed with her usual confidence. "Get ready for a smooth landing… unless something decides to shoot at us. Then it'll be a bumpy one."

"Just land the ship," Aria snapped, her tone sharp but focused.

Ray chuckled nervously, gripping the edge of his seat. Here we go.

The ship touched down with a faint jolt, the ramp lowering to reveal the desolate, industrial landscape of the base. The team moved out in a tight formation, their steps cautious but deliberate. Selene disappeared into the shadows almost immediately, her daggers glinting briefly before she was gone. The rest of the group spread out, scanning their surroundings.

"Two guards at the perimeter," Leon whispered, gesturing toward the figures near the entrance. "Selene?"

A faint glint of steel was the only warning before the two guards crumpled silently, taken out with precision. Selene reappeared briefly, giving Leon a curt nod before melting back into the shadows.

Leon motioned for Ray and Aria to follow him as they approached the entrance. "Stay close," he whispered.

Ray nodded, his heart pounding. As they neared the door, Leon turned to Aria. "Count them."

Aria peered through the small window, her sharp eyes scanning the room. "Seven guards. Lightly armed but alert."

Ray couldn't suppress the grin spreading across his face. "Let me handle them."

Leon raised an eyebrow, glancing at Aria. "Think he's ready?"

Aria hesitated before sighing. "Let's find out. Just don't mess this up, Ray."

Ray unsheathed his plasma swords, their hum breaking the tense silence. "I won't," he promised, his voice steady.

He dashed forward, his movements almost a blur. The first guard turned, startled, but Ray's blade was faster, disarming him with a clean strike before knocking him out with a well-placed kick. The second guard shouted an alarm, raising his weapon, but Ray's laser pistol fired first, dropping him.

"They're here!" one of the guards yelled, drawing his rifle. The room erupted into chaos as the remaining guards scrambled into action.

"What the—?!" another guard shouted, only to be silenced as Ray closed the distance, his plasma sword cutting through his weapon. A swift punch sent the guard sprawling.

"Get him!" a burly mercenary barked, rallying the others. Two guards charged at Ray, their weapons drawn. Ray ducked under a swing, his blade slicing through the rifle's barrel. He spun, delivering a powerful kick that sent the guard crashing into a crate. The second guard hesitated, and Ray took advantage, firing his pistol to disable him.

Leon and Aria watched from the doorway, their expressions a mix of surprise and approval.

"He's better than I thought," Aria admitted, her voice low.

"He's good," Leon agreed. "Fast, too."

Ray took down the last two guards with a combination of agility and precision, disarming one with a deft strike and using him as a shield against the other's fire. The room fell silent, the guards either unconscious or incapacitated.

"Room clear," Ray called, his breathing heavy but controlled.

Leon stepped inside, clapping him on the shoulder. "Nice work."

Before anyone could relax, movement caught Ray's eye. A hidden enemy emerged from a corner, his rifle aimed directly at Leon and Aria.

"Duck!" Ray shouted.

Leon and Aria hit the ground as Ray raised his pistol, firing a precise shot that hit the enemy squarely in the chest. The mercenary collapsed, his weapon clattering to the floor.

Aria stood, brushing herself off. "Not bad," she said, her tone begrudgingly impressed. Inwardly, her thoughts were racing. He's reckless but effective. Where did he learn to fight like that?

Leon grinned, clearly pleased. "You've got potential, Ray. Keep this up, and you'll go far."

The team regrouped, ensuring the area was secure. As the ship's engines roared to life, ready to extract them, Aria turned to Ray.

"Good work," she said, her voice quieter this time. "But don't let it go to your head."

Ray smirked, his confidence shining through. "Wouldn't dream of it, Vice Captain."

The team boarded the ship, the ramp closing behind them with a hiss. The hum of the engines grew louder as the ship ascended, leaving the mission site behind. The adrenaline of the mission slowly gave way to relief as the team made their way to the deck.

Captain Leon stood at the center, his presence as commanding as ever. "Alright, everyone," he began, his voice carrying over the low rumble of the ship. "Mission accomplished. The base is neutralized, and the rogue mercenaries are no longer a threat. Excellent work, all of you."

The team gathered around, a mix of tired smiles and relaxed postures. Lyra was the first to speak up, her fiery energy undiminished. "Did you see the landing? Smooth as silk. Told you I'd get us in perfectly."

"Smooth until you almost hit that pile of crates," Jade teased, sipping her tea.

Lyra smirked, leaning against the wall. "That was intentional. Keeps things exciting."

"Exciting or reckless?" Astrid quipped, folding her arms with a playful grin.

"Both," Lyra shot back, winking.

Zara adjusted her glasses, chiming in nervously. "I… I double-checked all the gear before we left. Everything worked perfectly, didn't it? No malfunctions?"

Leon smiled warmly. "Everything worked exactly as it should, Zara. Great job."

Zara's face flushed slightly as she muttered, "T-Thank you, Captain."

"And what about Ray?" Mira asked, her soft voice cutting through the banter. "I think he deserves some recognition."

All eyes turned briefly to Ray, who stood at the back of the group, his arms crossed and a faint smile on his face. Leon nodded. "Ray was impressive out there. Took down those guards like a seasoned pro."

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Guess the newbie's got some moves after all."

"Not bad," Selene added, her tone neutral but with a hint of approval.

Ray nodded slightly but said nothing. His attention shifted as the conversation turned back to the captain. The team's energy lightened, laughter breaking out as the harem began their usual playful banter with Leon.

"So, Captain," Lyra started, her tone mischievous, "what's the plan for celebrating this victory? You owe us, you know."

Leon chuckled, shaking his head. "I owe you? For doing your job?"

Astrid stepped forward with a sly smile. "She's not wrong, you know. A little appreciation wouldn't hurt."

"How about a nice dinner?" Mira suggested, her eyes lighting up. "You could even cook."

"Or maybe a day off," Jade added, her calm voice carrying an air of humor. "You know, for recovery."

Zara fidgeted with her tools, mumbling, "I… I wouldn't mind… a dinner with just us and the captain."

Leon raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. I'll see what I can do."

Selene leaned against the wall, her piercing gaze softening slightly. "Don't make promises you can't keep, Captain," she said, though her tone carried a rare warmth. "You wouldn't want to disappoint us."

"We'd never let him forget it," Lyra added, smirking.

At that moment, Evelyn "Eve" Stroud entered the deck, her short, dark blue hair catching the light as she adjusted the holographic device on her wrist. "What's all this noise about?" she asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and playful sarcasm. "Is the captain handing out medals already?"

Leon turned to her with a grin. "Eve. Glad you could join us."

Eve raised an eyebrow, her pale green eyes locking onto him. "Well, someone has to keep you all grounded. Can't let you get too full of yourself after one successful mission."

"Grounded?" Lyra laughed. "You're one to talk, Eve. Didn't you almost crash the ship during that asteroid field run?"

Eve smirked, her wit razor-sharp. "Did we crash? No. Did I save your reckless hide? Yes."

Jade chuckled softly, raising her teacup. "Touché."

"If you're done debating who's the better pilot," Astrid interjected smoothly, "perhaps we can discuss how to properly reward the team for their efforts."

"You mean reward the captain," Eve teased, her gaze lingering on Leon. "He's the one everyone's vying for, isn't he?"

Leon sighed with mock exasperation. "I don't know if I should feel flattered or worried."

"Flattered," Mira said with a giggle. "Definitely flattered."

The room filled with laughter as the banter continued, each member throwing in their own ideas and teasing the captain. Ray, standing silently at the back, observed the camaraderie. The playful flirting and lighthearted atmosphere were a stark contrast to the tension of the mission.

As the laughter grew louder, Ray quietly stepped out of the room, leaving the team to their private time. He walked down the corridor, his thoughts swirling. They've got their bond. Their dynamic. I'll just keep doing my part from the sidelines.

He made his way to the observation deck, looking out at the stars as the ship cruised through the vast expanse of space.
