Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 Excerpt_ The First Apex Run

The night sky over Velocity City burned with neon lights and the roar of engines. At the starting line of the Apex Run, ten cars lined up, their drivers brimming with confidence—or fear. Kayden's Toyota AE86 stood out like a relic among the modern beasts.

Elena adjusted the harness in the passenger seat, her fingers brushing against the makeshift handle Kayden had bolted in for her. "So… does this thing actually go fast, or are you just here to look nostalgic?"

Kayden smirked, his hands steady on the wheel. "You'll see. She doesn't look like much, but she's got spirit."

Across the line, Victor "Phantom" Kane revved his Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series, the guttural growl of its twin-turbo V8 sending shivers down the spines of the other drivers. His cold eyes locked onto Kayden.

"Kayden, don't let him get in your head," Mia said over the comms from her Toyota GT86, parked in the next row. Her metallic blue car gleamed under the streetlights. "Focus on the road. And don't let Elena throw you off."

Elena rolled her eyes but kept her voice steady. "I'm right here, Mia. And I'll have you know, I'm great under pressure."

Kayden chuckled. "Both of you, quiet. I need to focus."

The flag dropped, and the race began.

The Race

Kayden slammed the accelerator, the AE86's 4A-GE engine howling as the car launched forward. The initial burst put him ahead of two competitors in a Nissan 350Z and a Honda Civic Type R, but Victor's AMG GT tore past him in a blur of matte black and crimson.

"Kayden, he's gaining too much ground!" Elena shouted, gripping the door handle.

"Relax," Kayden replied, shifting gears. "This isn't about straight-line speed. The mountain pass is where we shine."

The course veered onto a narrow, winding road carved into the cliffs. One wrong move, and they'd be freefalling into the abyss below.

Victor dominated the straights, his car's monstrous power keeping him ahead. But as the road tightened, Kayden's AE86 came alive. The lightweight frame and upgraded suspension allowed him to drift through hairpin turns with surgical precision.

Elena watched, her breath catching as the city lights blurred outside the windows. "How are you doing this?"

"Weight balance," Kayden said, flicking the steering wheel to initiate another drift. "The AE86 is built for this. Just trust me."

An Unexpected Connection

Halfway through the course, another driver—a cocky millionaire in a Nissan GT-R R35—tried to force Kayden off the road.

"Kayden!" Elena yelled as the GT-R sideswiped them, the impact jolting her against the door.

Kayden gritted his teeth, countersteering to regain control. "Hold on!"

He downshifted, letting the AE86's rear tires grip the road before slingshotting around a corner. The maneuver left the GT-R behind, its driver cursing as his heavier car struggled with the tight turns.

Elena's hand found Kayden's arm, her grip firm. "You saved us."

Kayden glanced at her, his usual calm replaced by an intensity she hadn't seen before. "I said, trust me."

For the first time that night, Elena felt a spark—not just from the danger, but from Kayden himself.

The Finish Line

In the final stretch, Victor and Kayden went head-to-head. Victor's AMG GT had the raw power, but Kayden's AE86 danced through the turns, closing the gap.

As the finish line approached, Kayden made his move. Timing it perfectly, he executed a high-speed drift around Victor on the inside lane, the AE86 scraping the guardrail but holding its line.

The crowd erupted as Kayden crossed the finish line first, his underdog victory sending shockwaves through the Apex Run.

Elena leaned back in her seat, her heart racing. "Okay," she said, breathless. "Maybe this old car does have some magic."

Kayden grinned, sweat dripping down his brow. "Told you. She's got spirit."

From the sidelines, Victor glared at them, his jaw tightening. This wasn't over—not by a long shot.
