"I can't do this," she said finally, standing up. Her legs felt unsteady beneath her, but she forced herself to stay upright. "I can't let you back in. Not after everything."
He stood too, his expression crumbling. "Diane—"
"Don't," she interrupted, her voice firm despite the tears streaming down her face. "Just… don't."
She walked to the door and opened it, the rain still falling softly outside. He hesitated, looking at her one last time before stepping out into the night.
As he disappeared into the darkness, she closed the door and leaned against it, her chest heaving with silent sobs.
She had let him go. But the ache in her heart told her she would never truly be free of him.
