Chapter 20 - chapter 20: unseen eyes

The day dragged on in an exhausting haze. No matter where I went or what I did, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me. The subtle weight of unseen eyes bore into my back, prickling the hairs on my neck. I told myself it was nothing. Paranoia. Residual nerves from everything that had happened in the tournament and Alaria's strange behavior earlier. But it was more than that—it felt eerily familiar, like the same oppressive stare she had fixed on me during the tournament. My mind raced as I walked through the school's crowded hallways. Students chattered and bustled around me, but their presence did little to dispel the gnawing anxiety coiled in my chest. Every so often, I glanced over my shoulder, expecting to find her emerald-green eyes watching me from the shadows, but she was never there.

"Calm down," I muttered under my breath, gripping the strap of my bag tightly. "It's just your imagination. She's not even here." But my heart betrayed me, hammering against my ribs with an unrelenting rhythm. Each step felt heavier than the last, my breaths growing shallow. My surroundings began to blur, the cacophony of voices fading into a dull hum as my focus narrowed to the oppressive sensation clinging to me like a second skin.

By the time the next class ended, I couldn't take it anymore. I needed a moment to clear my head.

The hallways between periods were empty now, the clamor of students replaced by an eerie silence. My footsteps echoed off the tiled floors as I made my way toward a quieter wing of the building. The air felt colder here, the light dimmer despite the overhead fluorescents. I paused near a row of lockers, leaning against the cool metal as I tried to steady my breathing. My hand trembled as I raked it through my hair, the sensation of being watched growing sharper, more acute.

"Pull it together," I whispered, though the words felt hollow. "There's no one here. No one's—" A faint sound behind me—a soft click, like a shoe against the floor—made me whirl around. The hallway stretched out, empty and quiet. My pulse spiked, panic threading through my veins as my eyes darted back and forth.

And then I saw her.

She stepped out from the shadows at the far end of the corridor, her movements slow and deliberate. Veylara. Her figure was cloaked in flowing dark robes, the faint shimmer of silver thread tracing intricate patterns along the fabric. Her eyes, piercing and otherworldly, locked onto mine with an intensity that made the air around me feel heavier. Her presence was both calming and unsettling, like the eye of a storm. "Noctis," she said softly, her voice carrying effortlessly down the hallway despite the distance between us.

I froze, my breath hitching. "Veylara? What are you… What are you doing here?" She took a step closer, her movements as fluid as a shadow. "You've been uneasy all day," she said, tilting her head slightly. "I felt it. Like a thread of discord pulling at the air." I blinked, the words failing to register at first. "You… felt it?"

Veylara stopped a few paces away, her presence looming despite her calm demeanor. Her eyes scanned me, as if reading every unspoken thought swirling in my mind. "Yes," she said simply. "And you're right to feel uneasy. You're being watched."

The breath left my lungs in a sharp exhale, my stomach twisting into knots. "It's her, isn't it? Alaria. She's—she's watching me, isn't she?"

Veylara didn't answer immediately. Instead, she reached out, her pale fingers brushing against my shoulder with a touch that was surprisingly warm. "You're afraid," she murmured, her voice soothing yet firm. "But fear clouds the truth. Breathe, Noctis. Focus."

I tried to follow her instructions, inhaling deeply, but my chest still felt tight. "How can I focus when she's—when I—"

"You're stronger than this," Veylara interrupted gently, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Fear is what she wants. Chaos is what she thrives on. Don't let her win."Her words struck something deep within me, a flicker of resolve cutting through the haze of panic. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to meet her gaze. "Then what do I do? If she's… if she's trying to mess with me, how do I stop it?"

Veylara's lips curved into a faint, enigmatic smile. "By remembering who you are," she said. "And who she is. Alaria is a force of chaos, yes, but even chaos has its limits. She watches because she's testing you. Don't give her a reason to think you're weak." I frowned, her words sinking in slowly. "You make it sound like a game."

"Life is a game," Veylara said with a soft chuckle, stepping back. "And Alaria plays it well. But so can you." The hallway felt lighter somehow, as if her presence had dispelled the oppressive weight that had been following me all day. My heartbeat began to steady, my thoughts clearing bit by bit.

"Thank you," I said after a moment, my voice quieter now. Veylara nodded, her expression softening. "Stay vigilant, Noctis. You're walking a fine line, but you're not alone." With that, she turned and walked away, her figure melting into the shadows as if she had never been there.

I stood there for a long moment, her words echoing in my mind. The tension in my chest lingered, but the fear had dulled, replaced by a cautious determination. Whatever Alaria was planning, whatever game she was playing, I wouldn't let her win.

I stood in the hallway, my mind swirling with Veylara's cryptic words. Her presence had brought clarity, but it had also left me with questions—questions that wouldn't leave me alone. The memory of her calm, piercing gaze lingered, and with it, the faint sense that she hadn't told me everything. "Veylara!" I called out, my voice echoing through the empty corridor. My chest tightened with uncertainty, but I pushed the feeling aside. "Veylara, I need to talk to you!" For a moment, the silence that followed was suffocating. My own voice sounded hollow, bouncing off the walls as doubt crept in. Maybe she wouldn't come back. Maybe she didn't think I was worth the effort. But then, the shadows at the far end of the hallway seemed to shift, bending unnaturally as a familiar figure stepped forward. Veylara emerged with her usual grace, her robes flowing around her like liquid midnight. Her sharp, otherworldly eyes locked onto mine, her expression unreadable.

"You called," she said softly, tilting her head. There was a faint note of curiosity in her voice, but also something deeper—an understanding. "I—" I hesitated, suddenly unsure of how to begin. The weight of my own decision pressed down on me, but I swallowed hard and took a step closer. "I need to talk to you. About… about the deal."

Veylara's lips twitched, the faintest hint of a smile ghosting across her face. "Ah, so you've decided to revisit our little conversation," she murmured, her voice smooth and teasing. "What brought this on, I wonder?" Her calm demeanor unnerved me, but I forced myself to stand tall. "I've been thinking," I said, my tone firmer than I felt. "About everything. About Alaria, the tournament, and—" I paused, gripping the strap of my bag tightly. "And about you." She raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Go on."

"You said you could help me," I continued. "That you'd give me the strength to face whatever's coming. I didn't want to believe you at first, but… I don't think I can do this on my own. Not anymore." For a moment, she said nothing. Her gaze bore into me, searching for something beneath the surface. Then, slowly, she stepped closer, her movements as fluid as water. "Do you understand what you're saying, Noctis?" she asked, her voice quieter now, almost gentle. "This isn't a decision you can take back. Once you accept, there's no turning back."

"I know," I said, though my voice wavered slightly. "I've thought about it. I've felt what it's like to be powerless, to be afraid. I can't let that happen again." Veylara's smile widened, though it remained enigmatic. "Very well," she said, her tone almost playful. "If you're certain, then I see no reason to delay." Before I could respond, she closed the distance between us in one smooth motion. Her arms wrapped around me suddenly, pulling me into an embrace that was both comforting and disconcerting. Her touch was warm, almost too warm, and her presence seemed to envelop me completely. Her voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned in close, her breath brushing against my ear. "You won't regret this," she murmured, her tone laced with a strange mix of promise and danger.

I froze, my body stiffening as her words sank in. There was an intimacy to her actions that made my heart race, though whether it was from fear or something else, I couldn't tell.

"Veylara, what—"

"Shh," she interrupted, her grip tightening slightly. "There's nothing to fear now. You've made your choice, and I'll hold you to it. But first…" She pulled back just enough to meet my gaze, her eyes gleaming with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "I need to ensure you understand what this means. A pact is not merely a promise—it's a bond. You and I will be connected, in ways you cannot yet comprehend."

Her words sent a chill down my spine, but I nodded slowly. "I understand," I said, though my voice was barely above a whisper. "Do you?" she asked, her smile turning almost predatory. "Or are you simply saying what you think I want to hear?"

"I mean it," I insisted, my voice stronger now. "I'm ready." For a long moment, she studied me in silence, her expression unreadable. Then, to my surprise, she laughed—a soft, melodic sound that sent a strange warmth through me. "Very well, then," she said, releasing me from her embrace. "The pact is sealed. From this moment on, you are no longer alone." I exhaled shakily, the weight of her words settling over me. "What happens now?" I asked.

"Now?" she repeated, a sly smile playing on her lips. "Now, we see just how far you're willing to go." She stepped back into the shadows, her figure beginning to fade. But before she disappeared completely, her voice echoed through the hallway, soft and haunting.

"Remember, Noctis… I'm always watching."

And then she was gone, leaving me alone once more. The hallway felt colder without her, but the weight on my chest had lifted. For the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn't afraid. Whatever came next, I knew I wouldn't face it alone.

I made my way to the next class, my steps steady, for once unbothered by the lingering sensation of being watched. It was strange how quickly Veylara's presence had become a constant, like a second voice in my mind. She wasn't overbearing—yet. Her whispers were soft, almost playful, laced with an eerie comfort. "Stand tall, Noctis," her voice coiled around my thoughts. "Let them see the strength you're only beginning to understand." I didn't reply aloud, but my hand tightened around the strap of my bag as I reached the classroom door. Her words carried a sense of expectation, a weight I couldn't ignore. As I stepped inside, I scanned the rows of desks. The usual hum of chatter filled the room, students laughing and exchanging notes, their voices blending into an indistinct buzz. Sera was already seated by the window, her long golden hair catching the sunlight like strands of spun gold.

"Still holding your head high, I see," Veylara murmured, her voice a wisp of smoke in my mind. "Good. Let her see your resolve." I ignored her, walking to my seat beside Sera. She looked up as I approached, her sapphire eyes softening when they met mine. "Hey, you," she greeted, her voice carrying a mixture of relief and concern. "You seem… different."

"Different how?" I asked as I slid into the chair beside her, my tone casual.

"I don't know," she admitted, tilting her head as she studied me. "You just seem… calmer. Like something's shifted."

"Tell her it's nothing," Veylara urged, her tone almost amused. "Let her wonder."

"It's nothing," I said, echoing the suggestion before I could stop myself. "I guess I've just been thinking a lot."

Sera frowned slightly, clearly unconvinced. "You've been through a lot lately, Noctis. If there's something on your mind, you can talk to me, you know." Her words carried genuine concern, but before I could respond, Veylara's voice slithered through my thoughts again. "She doesn't need to know everything. Keep her at arm's length—for her sake as much as yours."

I hesitated, then nodded. "I know. Thanks, Sera." She opened her mouth to say more, but the classroom door swung open, cutting her off. The teacher strode in, carrying a stack of papers and wearing the harried expression of someone already running behind schedule. "Alright, everyone, settle down," he called, his voice carrying over the din. "Take your seats and let's get started." The room quieted as students shuffled to their desks, and I noticed Alaria sauntering in, her crimson hair catching the light as she moved. Her emerald-green eyes locked onto mine immediately, and a slow, mischievous smile spread across her lips. "Careful," Veylara's voice warned, low and sharp. "She's watching you closely. Too closely." Alaria didn't bother hiding her intentions. She made her way toward me, her movements deliberate, and slid into the seat directly behind mine.

"Hey there, cutie," she purred, leaning forward so her breath brushed against my ear. "Miss me?" I stiffened, glancing over my shoulder. Her gaze was predatory, her smile playful yet unsettling. "Alaria," I said evenly. "What are you doing?"

"Just saying hi," she replied, her tone dripping with mock innocence. She propped her chin on her hand, her emerald eyes glinting with amusement. "You don't seem happy to see me. That hurts, you know." Sera, who had been silent up until now, turned sharply in her seat to glare at Alaria. "What do you want?" she demanded, her voice tinged with irritation. Alaria's smile widened, and she tilted her head, pretending to ponder the question. "Hmm… I don't know. Maybe I just like the company." Her gaze flicked back to me, her smile sharpening. "Especially yours."

"Deflect," Veylara whispered urgently. "Don't let her sink her claws into you."

"I'm sure there's someone else who'd appreciate your company more," I said, keeping my tone neutral. "Oh, but they wouldn't be nearly as fun as you," Alaria shot back, leaning closer. "You've got something… special about you. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm dying to find out." Sera stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. "He doesn't have time for your games," she snapped, her sapphire eyes blazing. Alaria laughed, a light, tinkling sound that somehow felt dangerous. "Relax, princess. I'm just making conversation." The teacher cleared his throat at the front of the room, his expression stern. "Ladies, is there a problem?"

"No problem at all," Alaria said sweetly, settling back into her chair. But as soon as the teacher's attention shifted away, she leaned forward again, her voice a whisper. "We're not done, cutie." I exhaled slowly, gripping the edge of my desk as the lesson began. Alaria's presence loomed behind me, her occasional hums and the tap of her pen on the desk keeping me on edge.

"You'll need to deal with her sooner or later," Veylara mused, her voice a soft murmur. "She won't stop until she gets what she wants."

"What does she want?" I asked silently, my thoughts directed inward. Veylara chuckled, a low, knowing sound. "That's for you to find out. But tread carefully, Noctis. The game you're playing with her has higher stakes than you realize." The rest of the lesson passed in a blur, the tension in the room palpable. When the bell finally rang, I gathered my things quickly, eager to escape Alaria's shadow. But as I stood, her voice rang out, smooth and teasing. "Don't forget me, darling~" I turned to see her standing there, a sly smile on her lips. She stepped closer, her movements fluid, and grabbed my arm. Her chest pressed against me, and she tilted her head, her emerald eyes locking onto mine.

"See you soon," she whispered, her voice dripping with promise. I pulled my arm free, my heart pounding, and turned away without a word. "The shadows are watching, Noctis," Veylara murmured as I left the room, her voice a soft echo in my mind. "And so am I. Don't let them catch you off guard."

My mind was spinning, Alaria's words replaying over and over like a song stuck on repeat. The way she had looked at me, the way her voice lingered, sent a chill down my spine. "She's a distraction," Veylara's voice whispered in my head, steady and calm. "A predator testing her prey. Don't let her rattle you."

"I'm fine," I muttered under my breath, knowing full well she could hear me.

"Are you? Your heart is racing. Do you think she noticed?" Her tone held a teasing edge, as if this was all part of some game. I clenched my fists, willing myself to focus. The hallway seemed longer than usual, the faces of my classmates blurring together. I couldn't shake the feeling that Alaria's emerald eyes were still watching me, even from a distance.

Ahead, Sera was waiting by the door to our next class. Her arms were crossed, and her expression was a mix of concern and frustration.

"You're late," she said as I approached.

"I'm not late," I replied, though I could feel the tension in my voice. "Just… taking my time."

Her sapphire eyes narrowed slightly. "What's going on with you? And don't say it's nothing."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "It's complicated."

"It always is with you," she said, softening. Her tone wasn't accusatory, just… tired. "Look, Noctis, I get it. You've been through a lot. But whatever's going on, you don't have to deal with it alone." I glanced around the hallway, ensuring we weren't overheard. Veylara was silent now, a faint presence lingering at the edge of my thoughts.

"I appreciate that," I said quietly. "But some things… they're better kept to yourself. For now." Sera frowned, but she nodded. "Just don't shut me out completely, okay?"

"I won't," I promised, though the weight of Veylara's pact and Alaria's presence made the words feel hollow. We entered the classroom together and took our seats. The lesson began almost immediately, but my focus was elsewhere. The whispers of Veylara returned, subtle and fleeting, like the brush of a shadow against my mind. "Don't let your guard down, Noctis. She's still here."

I didn't have to ask who she meant. A quick glance around the room confirmed it—Alaria was sitting a few rows back, her emerald eyes locked onto me with a look that was equal parts curiosity and amusement.

I turned back to the front, determined to ignore her. The teacher droned on about equations and formulas, but my mind was a battlefield.

"She wants something from you," Veylara mused, her tone thoughtful. "But she's not used to being denied. That's why she's fixated on you."

"Great," I muttered under my breath.

"Did you say something?" Sera whispered, leaning closer.

"Just talking to myself," I replied quickly. The lesson dragged on, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. I could feel Alaria's gaze burning into the back of my head, and every so often, I caught her giggling softly to herself. It was unnerving, to say the least. When the bell finally rang, I gathered my things in record time. Sera shot me a questioning look, but I avoided her gaze. "Wait up," she said, following me into the hallway. "You're acting weird again."

Before I could respond, a familiar voice called out behind me. "Noctis~"

I froze, my stomach twisting. Sera's expression darkened as Alaria approached, her crimson hair gleaming in the fluorescent light. "Don't you ever slow down?" Alaria teased, her smile wicked as she stepped between me and Sera. "You're going to wear yourself out, cutie."

"I'm fine," I said curtly, stepping back. Alaria pouted, her emerald eyes glinting with mischief. "Aw, don't be like that. I just wanted to say hi."

"Hi," I said flatly. "Now, if you'll excuse us—"

"Oh, don't be so boring," she interrupted, her tone playful but with an edge of something darker. "We have all these classes together now. We should make the most of it, don't you think?" Sera stepped forward, her sapphire eyes blazing. "He doesn't owe you anything."

Alaria turned to her, her smile never faltering. "And you are…?"

"I'm his friend," Sera said firmly.

Alaria chuckled, a low, melodic sound. "Friend, huh? How cute." She turned back to me, her expression softening into something almost sincere. "Don't let her boss you around, Noctis. You're too special for that." Before I could respond, Veylara's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding. "End this. Now."

I took a deep breath, stepping back and putting some distance between us. "I've got to go," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. Alaria's smile faded for a fraction of a second before returning, brighter and sharper than ever. "See you soon, darling~" As I walked away, Sera close behind, I felt the weight of Alaria's gaze linger on me.

"This is just the beginning," Veylara whispered, her tone heavy with meaning. "Be ready for what's to come."
