Chapter 3 - The Watchers' Warning

### **Part 3: The Watchers' Warning**

The aircraft sped through the vast and uncharted sky, but no matter how fast Ren pushed the engines, the metallic construct behind them seemed to grow larger and closer with each passing second. It was like a predator, and they were its prey. The tension in the cabin was palpable, each member of the crew gripped by a mixture of fear and disbelief.

"What is that thing?" Mika asked, her voice trembling despite her effort to remain calm.

"I don't know," Ren replied, his hands tight on the controls. "But it's not giving up."

Kaine leaned over the flickering control panel, his fingers dancing over the buttons. "It's emitting some kind of signal—low frequency, but strong. Whatever it is, it knows we're here, and it's not happy about it."

"Great," Mika muttered, gripping the edge of her seat. "We break through the barrier and immediately get chased by a giant sky-monster. Perfect plan, Ren."

"Not the time, Mika!" Ren shot back, though her sarcasm masked a truth he couldn't ignore. He had no idea what they were up against.

Allen, who had been silent, suddenly pointed forward. "Look! Up ahead!"

Ren glanced where Allen indicated and saw another shape emerging from the horizon, but this one was smaller, less ominous. As they drew closer, they realized it wasn't another metallic construct but a floating station—an enormous platform suspended in the air, with towers and spires stretching upward as if reaching for the stars. The structure glimmered faintly in the light of the unfamiliar sky.

"Is that... a city?" Mika asked, her voice soft with disbelief.

"It looks abandoned," Kaine observed, his analytical gaze sweeping over the strange structure. "No lights, no movement. But it's stable, and it might be our only chance to hide."

"Better than being caught by whatever's chasing us," Ren decided. He adjusted the controls, steering the aircraft toward the station. The engines groaned in protest, but the ship responded, angling toward the platform. Behind them, the metallic construct continued its relentless pursuit, its shape now fully visible—an enormous, spiked mass that radiated menace.

The aircraft shuddered as it approached the station, the turbulence from the high-altitude winds battering its frame. Ren managed to guide the ship onto a flat expanse near the edge of the platform, the landing rough but successful. The engines whined to a stop, and the sudden silence was deafening.

"Everyone out!" Ren commanded, already unbuckling his harness.

The group scrambled out of the aircraft and onto the platform. The air was colder here, thinner, but it carried a strange energy, like static before a storm. Around them, the station was a labyrinth of corridors and towering structures, eerily quiet and lifeless.

"What is this place?" Mika whispered, looking around.

"Some kind of outpost," Kaine suggested, studying the architecture. "It's old, though. Very old."

Before they could explore further, a low hum filled the air, rising in intensity. The group turned to see the metallic construct approaching the station, its spiked edges glinting ominously. It slowed as it neared, hovering just above the platform like a predator sizing up its prey.

"What do we do now?" Allen asked, his voice shaky.

Ren clenched his fists, searching for options. But before he could answer, the hum changed pitch, and the construct emitted a burst of light. The group shielded their eyes, but when they looked again, figures were emerging from the construct—tall, humanoid shapes, their bodies encased in sleek, metallic armor that glimmered with an otherworldly sheen. Their faces were hidden behind reflective visors, and they moved with a precision that suggested they were more machine than human.

One of the figures stepped forward, its voice resonating with a deep, mechanical tone. "You have trespassed beyond the barrier."

The group exchanged uneasy glances. Ren stepped forward, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him. "We didn't mean any harm. We just wanted to know what was beyond the sky."

The figure tilted its head, as if considering his words. "The barrier exists to protect your kind. You have defied the law of preservation."

"Preservation?" Mika echoed, frowning. "Preservation from what?"

The figure ignored her, focusing on Ren. "You have brought danger upon yourselves. Turn back now, or face the consequences."

"Turn back?" Ren asked, his voice rising in frustration. "We came all this way to find answers. Why is the barrier here? What are you hiding?"

The figure stepped closer, its imposing frame towering over Ren. "The stars you seek are not as you remember them. What lies beyond the barrier is not meant for your eyes. Your journey ends here."

Ren's heart pounded as he realized the gravity of their situation. They had defied the unknown, broken through the barrier, and now faced a force that was far beyond their understanding. But despite the fear, he couldn't back down—not now.

"We're not leaving until we get answers," he said firmly.

The figure remained silent for a moment, then raised an arm. A pulse of energy surged from its hand, and the platform beneath them began to vibrate. The other figures moved closer, forming a semicircle around the group, their intentions clear.

Kaine stepped forward, his voice filled with defiance. "If you think you can scare us into turning back, you're wrong. We'll fight if we have to."

Mika grabbed Kaine's arm, pulling him back. "Don't be stupid! We can't take on something like this."

Before the situation could escalate further, a sudden, melodic chime echoed through the air. The metallic figures froze, their heads turning toward the source of the sound. From one of the corridors, a new figure emerged—a cloaked individual, their face obscured by a hood. Unlike the others, this figure's presence exuded a sense of calm rather than menace.

The cloaked figure raised a hand, and the metallic beings lowered their weapons, stepping back. The figure turned to the group, their voice soft but commanding. "You seek the truth of the stars. You must tread carefully, for the path you've chosen leads to both revelation and ruin."

Ren stared at the figure, his mind racing with questions. "Who are you? Why are you helping us?"

The figure did not answer immediately. Instead, they gestured toward the interior of the station. "Come. If you wish to understand what lies beyond the barrier, you must first understand what it protects."

The group hesitated, but Ren nodded, stepping forward. Whatever lay ahead, he knew this was their only chance to uncover the truth. Together, they followed the cloaked figure into the heart of the station, leaving behind the metallic watchers and the pursuit that had brought them to this fateful moment.
