Chapter 27 - Chapter 27

Mallory woke up to the smell of sizzling bacon and the faint hum of her magically self-sufficient kitchen in full swing. She stretched lazily, relishing the warmth of her cozy blanket cocoon, when she remembered the orbs.

Her eyes darted to the coffee table. The three glowing spheres still sat there, but now they were spinning slowly, as if they were holding a silent conference. For a brief, fleeting moment, Mallory felt a pang of responsibility. Were these things going to blow up? Summon a demon? Open a portal to another zombie-infested dimension?

"Eh," she muttered, rolling back into her blanket cocoon. "That's future Mallory's problem."

Her moment of peace was interrupted by Greg stomping into the living room, his hair disheveled and his face pale. "Mallory!" he snapped. "Do you have any idea what those things are doing?"

Mallory peeked one eye out from under her blanket. "Uh, spinning?"

"They're charging," Greg hissed. "Zara says they're probably building energy for something massive. Maybe catastrophic!"

"Cool," Mallory replied, burying her face in the pillow.

Greg let out a frustrated groan and yanked the blanket off her. "You need to take this seriously!"

Mallory sat up with a dramatic yawn. "Okay, okay, I'll fix it. After breakfast." She padded into the kitchen, grabbing a plate of bacon and waffles, while Greg looked like he was on the verge of an aneurysm.

Meanwhile, Zara and Alex were huddled over the orbs, Zara muttering something about "residual magic fields" and "latent connections." Altair, true to form, was leaning against the counter, sipping coffee and watching the chaos unfold with mild amusement.

"So," he said, addressing Mallory. "Any bright ideas on how to deal with our glowing friends?"

Mallory shoved a piece of waffle into her mouth and shrugged. "I figure they'll tell us what they want eventually. Magic stuff always does."

"That's your plan?" Greg exploded. "Wait for the orbs to do something? That's not a plan—it's a recipe for disaster!"

Mallory grinned, unbothered. "Aren't you dramatic this morning?"

Before Greg could launch into another tirade, the orbs suddenly stopped spinning and emitted a low, resonant hum. The sound grew louder, filling the room until it felt like the walls themselves were vibrating.

Then, without warning, the orbs shot beams of light into the air. The beams converged in the middle of the room, forming a swirling portal.

"See?" Mallory said, gesturing with her fork. "Told you they'd do something."

The portal expanded, revealing a lush, verdant landscape on the other side. It was nothing like the desolate ruins or magical forests they'd seen before. This place was alive, vibrant, and teeming with color.

Zara's eyes widened. "This... this looks like the Heart of Solara. The legends say it's the source of all magic in this realm."

Greg groaned. "Great. More magical nonsense."

Mallory set her plate down and grabbed her parasol. "Well, guess we're going in."

Altair clapped his hands together. "Now that's the spirit!"

The group reluctantly followed Mallory through the portal, emerging onto a soft, grassy meadow. The air was warm and smelled faintly of flowers and honey. In the distance, a towering crystal structure sparkled in the sunlight.

Mallory shaded her eyes and whistled. "Fancy."

As they made their way toward the crystal tower, they encountered an array of strange and whimsical creatures. A group of rabbit-like beings with glowing antlers watched them curiously from the treetops. A massive bird with feathers that shimmered like oil flew overhead, letting out a melodic cry.

Mallory stopped to pet a particularly fluffy creature that looked like a cross between a dog and a cloud. It wagged its tail enthusiastically, then promptly fell asleep at her feet.

"Can we focus, please?" Greg said, his tone exasperated.

The group reached the base of the crystal tower, where a set of ornate golden doors awaited them. The doors opened on their own, revealing a spiraling staircase that led upward into the shimmering structure.

As they ascended, the air grew cooler, and the walls began to glow with shifting patterns of light. It was mesmerizing, almost hypnotic, and Mallory had to stop herself from getting too distracted.

At the top of the staircase, they entered a vast chamber filled with floating crystals. Each crystal pulsed with a soft, internal light, and together they created a harmonious melody that seemed to resonate through the entire room.

In the center of the chamber stood a figure—a tall, regal woman with flowing silver hair and eyes that glowed like the moon. She wore a robe that shimmered with every color of the rainbow, and her presence was both serene and commanding.

"Welcome," she said, her voice melodic and soothing. "I am Elaris, Keeper of the Heart."

Mallory tilted her head. "Cool. So, uh, what do you want with us?"

Elaris smiled faintly. "You have brought the Orbs of Resonance to the Heart of Solara. Their power is necessary to restore balance to this realm."

"Balance?" Greg repeated, his tone skeptical. "What does that even mean?"

Elaris gestured to the floating crystals. "Magic is the lifeblood of this world. But it is not infinite. It must be nurtured, protected, and restored when it falters. The orbs you carry contain the essence of forgotten magic—magic that must be returned to the Heart."

Mallory frowned. "So, you just want us to... hand them over?"

"Not quite," Elaris said, her expression turning serious. "The orbs must be placed in the Nexus, but only one who is truly attuned to their power can do so. The process is not without risk."

"Ah, there it is," Mallory said, smirking. "The catch."

"Do you accept this responsibility?" Elaris asked, her glowing eyes fixed on Mallory.

Mallory shrugged. "Sure, why not? Sounds fun."

Greg groaned. "Mallory, this is not something you just agree to on a whim!"

"Relax," she said, twirling her parasol. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Elaris raised an eyebrow but said nothing, leading Mallory to the center of the room where a circular platform awaited. The orbs floated out of Mallory's pocket and arranged themselves in a triangular formation above the platform.

As Mallory stepped onto the platform, the air around her began to hum with energy. The orbs glowed brighter, and the floating crystals in the chamber began to vibrate in harmony.

Then the ground beneath her feet disappeared.

Mallory found herself suspended in a swirling void of light and shadow. She could feel the orbs' energy coursing through her, filling her with a strange, exhilarating power. It was overwhelming, like standing in the eye of a storm.

Images flashed before her eyes—scenes of the world's history, its triumphs and tragedies, its beauty and its destruction. She saw the magic that sustained it, the delicate balance that kept it alive.

When she opened her eyes, she was back in the chamber, the orbs now fused into a single, brilliant crystal.

Elaris smiled. "You have done well, Mallory. The Heart is restored."

Mallory grinned. "Told you it'd be easy."

Greg sighed. "I hate that you're always right."

Altair clapped her on the back. "You're a natural hero, Mallory."

Mallory shrugged. "Eh. I just like shiny things."

As they stepped back through the portal to her apartment, Mallory felt a sense of accomplishment. Sure, she didn't entirely understand what she'd just done, but it seemed to have worked out. And now she could finally get back to doing what she did best: absolutely nothing.

For now, at least, the world was safe—and Mallory's fridge was still fully stocked.
