Chapter 26 - Maya's Surprise

Sophia sat at her kitchen table, scrolling through emails on her laptop while sipping her morning coffee. The sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. She was finally at a place in her life where things felt calm—Adrian was set to return from Paris in a few days, and her work on their dream home was progressing smoothly.

The sound of her phone buzzing pulled her attention away from her laptop. It was Maya.

"Maya! You're calling early," Sophia said, answering with a smile.

"I know, but I couldn't wait any longer," Maya said, her voice brimming with excitement. "Are you free this afternoon? I need to talk to you about something—something big."

Sophia chuckled. "You're being so mysterious. Of course, I'm free. Come over."

"I'll be there in an hour," Maya said, hanging up before Sophia could ask anything else.

Sophia shook her head, laughing softly. Maya had always been the spontaneous one, full of surprises and bursting with energy. Whatever this was, it had to be something major.

---Maya Arrives---

Exactly an hour later, Maya arrived, practically bouncing through the door. She carried a large tote bag and had an infectious grin on her face.

"Sophia, you're not ready for this," Maya said as she placed her bag on the kitchen counter.

"I feel like I need to sit down for whatever you're about to say," Sophia replied, laughing as she gestured to the living room.

They settled on the couch, and Maya reached into her bag, pulling out a small velvet box. Sophia's eyes widened.

"Wait… is that what I think it is?" Sophia asked, her voice a mix of surprise and excitement.

Maya opened the box to reveal a stunning engagement ring. A round-cut diamond sparkled in the light, set in a delicate rose gold band.

"Oh my gosh, Maya! You're engaged?" Sophia practically squealed, grabbing her friend's hand to take a closer look at the ring.

"Yes! Ethan proposed last night," Maya said, her eyes shimmering with joy.

Sophia froze for a split second. "Wait… Ethan? As in your Ethan? The Ethan you've been dating for the past year? Not my Ethan?"

Maya burst into laughter. "Yes, my Ethan! Of course, it's not the same guy from your past. That would be way too weird. Honestly, the name coincidence still throws me off sometimes."

Sophia exhaled, laughing along with her. "You scared me for a second there! But wow, Maya, this is incredible. Tell me everything!"

---

Maya launched into the story of how Ethan had planned the proposal.

"It happened at the restaurant where we had our first date," Maya began, her cheeks flushing with happiness. "He reserved a private section on the rooftop, and there were candles and flowers everywhere. It was so beautiful, Sophia. And then he got down on one knee and started talking about how I've changed his life, how he can't imagine a future without me."

Sophia's heart swelled with joy for her friend. "Maya, that's so perfect. I'm so happy for you."

Maya nodded, her expression softening. "You've been such a big part of my life, Soph. I couldn't wait to share this with you. You're the first person I told, even before my parents."

Sophia felt a lump in her throat. "That means so much to me, Maya. You deserve this kind of happiness. Ethan sounds like an amazing guy."

"He is," Maya said. "But you know what? I wouldn't have been ready for this if it weren't for you. Seeing you work through your own struggles and find love with Adrian—it's inspired me more than you know."

Sophia blinked back tears. "We've both come so far, haven't we?"

---

Maya hesitated for a moment before reaching into her bag again. This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

"What's this?" Sophia asked as Maya handed it to her.

"Open it and find out," Maya said, her eyes twinkling.

Sophia carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a beautifully designed card. Her breath hitched when she read the words:

Will you be my maid of honor?

"Oh, Maya…" Sophia's voice was thick with emotion. "Of course, I will! I'd be honored."

Maya threw her arms around Sophia in a tight hug. "I couldn't imagine anyone else by my side. You're my rock, Soph."

Sophia hugged her back, feeling overwhelmed by the moment. "We're going to make this the most amazing wedding ever."

---

After the excitement of the engagement announcement, Maya reached for her tote bag one last time.

"There's one more thing," Maya said, pulling out a folder.

Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Okay, now you're just showing off."

Maya laughed. "This isn't about me. It's about us."

She handed Sophia the folder, which contained a portfolio of designs and concept sketches.

"These are incredible," Sophia said as she flipped through the pages. "Did you design these?"

Maya nodded. "I've been working on a new fashion line, something I've dreamed about for years. And I want you to be part of it."

"Me?" Sophia asked, confused.

"Yes! I know you're an architect, but your eye for design is amazing. Remember all those times you helped me with my ideas, giving feedback on colors and structures? I want you to collaborate with me on this—help me create something that blends architecture and fashion."

Sophia was speechless. "Maya, this is… wow. I don't even know what to say."

"Say yes," Maya said with a grin.

Sophia laughed. "How can I say no to you? Of course, I'll do it."

---

As the day went on, the two friends sat on the couch, reminiscing about their journey together. They talked about the times they had supported each other through heartbreak, career struggles, and personal growth.

"You've always believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself," Sophia said. "I wouldn't be where I am today without you, Maya."

Maya smiled. "And I wouldn't be here without you. We've always had each other's backs, Soph. That's never going to change."

Sophia nodded, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. Despite all the ups and downs, their friendship had remained a constant source of strength and joy.

---

That evening, they decided to celebrate both Maya's engagement and their new collaboration. They ordered takeout, poured glasses of wine, and toasted to their future.

"To love, friendship, and new beginnings," Maya said, raising her glass.

"To us," Sophia added, clinking her glass against Maya's.

As the night wore on, Sophia realized just how far they had both come. Life had thrown its fair share of challenges their way, but together, they had overcome them. And now, they were both stepping into a new chapter—one filled with love, dreams, and endless possibilities.

For the first time in a long time, everything felt exactly as it should.
