Chapter 8 - MICHAEL'S AMBUSH

The success of KAJ Enterprises had brought a fleeting sense of victory to Kayden and his team, but the weight of looming danger was ever-present. He sat at his desk in the late hours of the evening, his mind racing. The faint glow of his laptop illuminated his sharp features as he reviewed the intercepted reports Calvin had sent over. Michael Black wasn't done with them yet.

A knock on his office door broke the silence. Kayden looked up, his expression hardening. "Come in."

Ava stepped in hesitantly. She carried a tray with a cup of tea, her concern evident in the slight furrow of her brows. "You've been in here all day," she said, placing the tray on the desk. "I thought you could use this."

Kayden leaned back in his chair, his lips pressing into a thin line. "Thanks," he said curtly, though his gaze softened ever so slightly.

Ava lingered for a moment. "What's wrong?" she asked. "You've been distant lately, more than usual. Is it Michael?"

He didn't answer immediately, his eyes returning to the screen. "It's always Michael," he muttered.

She crossed her arms. "If he's coming after KAJ, Kayden. You don't have to do this alone."

Kayden finally looked at her, his intense gaze locking onto hers. "I appreciate the sentiment, Ava. But this fight is far more dangerous than you realize."

The next morning, Calvin barged into Kayden's office without knocking, his face a mix of urgency and frustration.

"We've got a problem," Calvin said, dropping a file on Kayden's desk. "Michael's men are planning to ambush one of our shipments tonight."

Kayden flipped open the file, scanning its contents. "Where?"

"Industrial district. They're targeting the shipment carrying the prototype for the new project."

Kayden's jaw tightened. "Of course, he'd aim for the project. He wants to destabilize us."

"What's the plan?" Calvin asked.

Kayden closed the file and stood. "We bait him. Let him think he's winning. Then we strike back."

The industrial district was dark and eerily quiet, the occasional flicker of a streetlamp casting shadows over the convoy. Kayden and Ava rode together in the lead vehicle, the air between them charged with tension.

"You didn't have to come," Kayden said without looking at her.

"And let you take all the credit?" Ava shot back, her voice laced with defiance.

A small smirk tugged at the corner of Kayden's lips, but he quickly masked it.

Suddenly, headlights flared to life, and a screech of tires broke the silence. Multiple black SUVs blocked the road ahead, and masked men armed with automatic rifles poured out.

"Stay down!" Kayden ordered as he grabbed a handgun from under his seat.

The convoy guards engaged the attackers, gunfire echoing through the night. Kayden moved with precision, taking out one assailant after another, while Ava used her martial arts training to disarm a man who had gotten too close.

"You've been holding out on me," Kayden remarked as he covered her.

"Likewise," Ava retorted, delivering a swift kick to another attacker.

After what felt like hours, the attackers retreated, leaving behind several of their own injured or unconscious.

The quiet after the ambush was brief. As the guards collected the injured and secured the convoy, Kayden's phone vibrated sharply. He glanced at the screen to see an unknown number flashing.

"Kayden," Ava called from behind him, her voice tight with concern. "Who is it?"

He didn't respond immediately, swiping to answer the call. A video feed began playing, and Michael Black's face filled the screen. His eyes glinted with malicious delight, his signature smirk firmly in place.

"Well, well, well, Kayden. You've managed to surprise me once again," Michael began, his tone smooth yet venomous.

"Michael," Kayden growled, his grip tightening on the phone. "What do you want?"

Michael chuckled softly. "It's not about what I want. It's about what you're willing to lose. Let me make this simple for you."

The camera shifted, revealing Jia tied to a chair in a dimly lit room. Her wrists were bound tightly, and a cut on her cheek indicated she had already endured some abuse. Still, her eyes burned with defiance as she glared into the camera.

"Jia!" Ava gasped, rushing to Kayden's side.

Michael's voice continued as the camera panned back to him. "She's quite the firecracker. Gave my men a little trouble, but don't worry, I've got her under control."

"What do you want, Michael?" Kayden's voice was low, dangerous.

Michael leaned closer to the camera. "What I've always wanted—your downfall. Let's make this entertaining, shall we? Come to me, Kayden. Alone. Bring your best efforts because I'll be waiting."

The call ended abruptly, leaving Kayden and Ava staring at the blank screen.

"Kayden," Ava said, her voice trembling. "We have to save her."

"We will," Kayden said firmly, slipping the phone into his pocket. "But we're doing this on my terms."

Later that evening, Calvin spread a detailed map of the warehouse on the table in Kayden's office. Ava, Calvin, and several trusted operatives surrounded him as he laid out the plan.

"Michael's holding Jia here," Calvin said, pointing to a central room. "The place is heavily guarded, but most of his men are stationed around the perimeter."

Kayden nodded, his mind working rapidly. "We'll create a diversion at the west entrance while a smaller team infiltrates through the eastern corridor. Calvin, you'll lead the distraction. Ava and I will handle the extraction."

"I'm coming with you," Ava said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Kayden hesitated. "Ava, this isn't your fight—"

"It's Jia," she interrupted, her voice steely. "I'm not sitting this one out."

Kayden held her gaze for a moment before nodding. "Fine. Stay close to me."

Under the cover of darkness, the team moved swiftly. Calvin's group set off an explosion at the west entrance, drawing most of Michael's guards away. Kayden and Ava slipped into the eastern corridor, their footsteps silent as they navigated the maze-like warehouse.

They found Jia in the central room, her head lifting weakly as they entered. "Kayden," she whispered, her voice hoarse.

"Jia," Ava rushed to her side, quickly untying the ropes that bound her.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the corridor behind them. "Move!" Kayden barked, shielding them as gunfire erupted.

He returned fire, his movements precise and deadly. Ava helped Jia to her feet, and the three of them began their escape.

As they reached the main exit, Michael appeared, flanked by two armed men. "Leaving so soon?" he sneered.

Kayden stepped forward, his gun trained on Michael. "Let them go, Michael. This is between you and me."

Michael laughed. "It's always been between us, Kayden. But you can't save everyone. You'll learn that soon enough."

Kayden fired without hesitation, hitting one of Michael's men. Ava disarmed the second, using her martial arts skills to incapacitate him.

Michael lunged at Kayden, and the two engaged in a brutal hand-to-hand fight. The sound of fists connecting and grunts of effort filled the air as they clashed. Kayden's movements were fueled by years of training and a simmering rage, while Michael fought with reckless ferocity.

Ava watched anxiously, torn between helping and protecting Jia. Kayden finally gained the upper hand, pinning Michael against a wall.

"This ends now," Kayden said, his voice cold.

Michael smirked, blood dripping from his lip. "It's far from over." He slammed his head forward, breaking free and disappearing into the shadows.

Kayden cursed under his breath as Michael escaped.

Back at the safe house, the team regrouped. Jia was treated for her injuries, and the atmosphere was one of relief mixed with frustration.

"You saved me," Jia said to Kayden, her eyes glistening with gratitude.

"We're family," Kayden replied simply.

The group decided to celebrate their small victory. Drinks were poured, laughter filled the room, and for the first time in weeks, the tension lifted.

"I can't believe we pulled that off," Jia said, raising her glass.

"To teamwork," Ava added, clinking her glass against Jia's.

Kayden watched Ava from across the room, his expression unreadable. She caught his gaze and smiled softly, her own feelings bubbling beneath the surface.

Later that night, as the others drifted off to sleep, Kayden found Ava sitting on the balcony, staring at the stars.

"Can't sleep?" he asked, joining her.

She shook her head. "Too much on my mind."

He hesitated before saying, "Thank you for what you did today. You were incredible."

Ava smiled faintly. "So were you. You always are."

They sat in silence for a moment, the unspoken words hanging between them.

"Goodnight, Kayden," Ava said, standing to leave.

"Goodnight, Ava," he replied, his eyes lingering on her retreating figure.

In the quiet of the night, both wondered how much longer they could keep their feelings hidden.
