Chapter 21 - Ch 21: The Trials Within

With the guardian defeated, the path to the Temple of Light was finally open. The massive stone doors groaned as they slowly swung inward, revealing the vast, hollow interior. Ethan stood at the threshold, his heart racing with anticipation. The air inside was cool and heavy with magic, a palpable force that seemed to whisper in the back of his mind.

Leona stepped forward, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. "I can feel it," she murmured. "The power inside. It's overwhelming."

The others nodded, their senses attuned to the magic that radiated from the temple's core. Sylas looked toward the ceiling, his eyes narrowing. "This place... it's older than any structure we've encountered. And more dangerous. We must remain vigilant."

Ethan turned to face his comrades. "The relics are within, but they are guarded by trials. We've faced challenges before, but I believe this will be our greatest test yet."

Without another word, they ventured deeper into the temple, the flickering light of their torches casting long shadows across the smooth, white stone walls. The air grew warmer as they descended, and the deeper they went, the more intense the magic became. It was as though the temple itself was alive, responding to their presence.

The group reached the heart of the temple—a vast chamber with towering pillars that stretched to the sky. In the center of the room stood an altar, bathed in a soft, golden light. But as they moved closer, the ground beneath their feet trembled, and a deep rumble echoed through the chamber.

Suddenly, a voice boomed from the darkness, its tone ancient and filled with authority.

"Who dares to seek the relics of the gods?"

The voice seemed to reverberate off the walls, its power overwhelming. The group instinctively raised their weapons, ready for whatever challenge lay ahead.

"I am Ethan," he called out, his voice steady despite the weight of the moment. "We seek the relics to defeat the darkness that threatens our world."

There was a long pause before the voice responded, its tone shifting slightly. "Then you must prove your worth. Only those who are truly worthy may claim the power of the gods. You will face three trials. Succeed, and the relics will be yours. Fail, and you will be lost to the ages."

The ground shook again, and before Ethan could react, the chamber seemed to come alive. The walls shifted, and an enormous stone door appeared at the far end of the room. A glowing inscription appeared on the door:

"Trial One: The Trial of Strength."

Leona's hand tightened around her sword. "Strength… I don't like the sound of that."

"Stay alert," Sylas advised, his staff ready. "The trials are never what they seem."

Ethan stepped forward. "We'll face whatever comes. Together."

The moment his foot touched the ground in front of the door, the chamber rumbled once more, and the stone door slid open with a thunderous crash. Beyond it lay a vast arena, its floor made of smooth stone. In the center of the arena stood a massive figure—twice the size of any man, covered in thick, stone-like armor. Its eyes glowed with an eerie red light, and its massive sword was forged from blackened metal.

The figure raised its weapon, and a voice echoed from its helmet.

"I am the Trial of Strength. Defeat me, and you may proceed."

Leona stepped forward, her sword gleaming in the dim light. "I'll take this one," she said, her voice unwavering.

Ethan looked at her, his brow furrowed in concern. "Leona, be careful. We don't know what this thing is capable of."

She flashed him a confident smile. "I've faced worse."

With a swift motion, Leona charged at the stone guardian, her sword raised high. The guardian responded in kind, swinging its massive sword with incredible speed, despite its size. The clash of metal against metal echoed through the arena, the force of the blow sending a shockwave through the ground.

Leona gritted her teeth, her sword vibrating with the power of the impact. She had never encountered a foe like this before, but she wasn't going to back down. With every strike, she tested the guardian's defenses, looking for a weakness.

Sylas muttered an incantation under his breath, and a bolt of lightning shot from his staff, striking the guardian in the chest. The creature staggered back, but it quickly recovered, its red eyes glowing brighter.

"Keep attacking!" Ethan shouted. "Don't give it a chance to retaliate."

Leona gritted her teeth and pushed forward, slashing at the guardian's armored body. But every strike she made seemed to bounce off the stone, leaving no mark. The guardian, however, was relentless, swinging its enormous sword with terrifying speed.

Then, as the guardian swung its weapon down toward her, Leona rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the blow. She wasn't just fighting the guardian's strength—she was fighting its tactics as well.

Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet cracked, and a series of stone spikes shot upward, aiming straight for her. Leona barely managed to jump out of the way, but her foot grazed one of the spikes, leaving a shallow wound on her leg.

"Leona!" Mirella called out, ready to heal her, but Leona waved her off.

"I'm fine. Keep your focus on the battle."

Ethan scanned the arena, his mind racing. He knew they couldn't defeat this guardian through brute force alone. They had to outsmart it.

"Leona, aim for its joints!" Ethan called. "Find the weak spots!"

Leona nodded, understanding his plan. She dodged another swing of the guardian's sword and made a calculated strike toward its knee joint. The blade of her sword struck true, and the guardian let out a low growl of pain.

Encouraged, Leona pressed the attack, targeting the joints of the guardian's arms and legs. With each strike, the guardian's movements grew slower, more erratic. Finally, with one last, powerful blow, Leona drove her sword through the guardian's chest, shattering its stone armor.

The guardian staggered back, its red eyes dimming as it crumpled to the ground, defeated.

The arena fell silent, the echo of the battle still reverberating in the air. Leona stood panting, blood dripping from her wound, but a fierce smile spread across her face.

"We did it," she said, breathless.

The voice from earlier boomed again, this time with approval. "You have passed the first trial. The relics are closer now. Prepare for the next trial."

Ethan nodded, his resolve hardened. They had taken the first step, but the trials were far from over.
