Sunday school had almost ended when Eve rushed in. How
she wound up late was still a mystery to her but that was not
the point anymore, she was there now. The man on the
podium was talking about the mark of a true Christian, Eve
knew this because he was reading Romans 12:16 "....be the
same mind towards one another..." Eve wrote down the
Bible passage in her notepad and focused on the teaching. The
teacher was exceptionally good at teaching and he was able to
entertain some interaction from the congregation.
The service ended and Eve made a note to attend the parish
often as she had felt welcome and she agreed with the
teachings. She was walking briskly towards the gate when she
heard her name. She was surprised someone recognized her in
the big church considering how she was new to the
environment and she was even more surprised to see her
neighbour, Mrs Aransi waving at her frantically. She looked
so young and pretty in her jumpsuit and the elegant way she
carried her high heels.
"Eve!" Mrs Aransi called breathlessly. "Good afternoon,
Mrs Aransi" Eve replied. "Is this your church?" She asked.
"Yes! My husband is the Sunday school teacher" she said
excitedly. "Oh really?" Eve answered, surprised. "That's great,
I enjoyed the teaching," Eve said. Mrs Aransi smiled
mischievously "That's my husband," she said "You will be
surprised what he's good at" she winked at Eve. Before Eve could reply, a young girl of not more than twelve years came
up to them. "Ma, Josh won't leave his seat o" the girl said to
Mrs Aransi. Eve watched as the smile left the woman's face
"so, you will leave him there abi?!" She snapped "do whatever
you can to make him leave! foolish girl!", she finished as the
girl retreated to avoid being slapped, then walked away. Eve
noticed how the girl walked awkwardly but she quickly
dismissed it. Mrs Aransi turned back to Eve "don't mind my
maid, Sidi" she said "she can be a dunce sometimes" Eve
shook her head "Nah, it's fine....have to go Mrs A" Eve said
suddenly uneasy, "I intend stopping at the market" "Alright
Eve" Mrs A said sweetly "stop by the house anytime, okay?"
They bid each other goodbye.
