Chapter 105 - she really believed him

Y/n's POV

I fell asleep near the door as I waited for Kakucho to come back. Seeing how alone I was in this timeline hurt in ways I couldn't vocalize, but seeing Kakucho gave me hope. I jolted awake at a light knocking, jumping to answer my door quickly. I swung open the door, smiling brightly at my shy friend.

"Come in! Can't believe you left without saying anything. I'm still glad to see you, though Kaku." I step to the side to allow him in and can't help but speak at the speed of light.

If he leaves again, I'll be left with nothing but silence again. I hate it so much….I don't want him to go…

My heart was beating fast, as I paced around the room trying to keep the conversation going. He gave short answers, making me more nervous since he said very little but watched me like a hawk.

"Are you thirsty? I can.." Before I could turn around, I felt a grip on my hand to stop me in my tracks. I didn't want to look at him.

He's going to leave…he's going to leave again…

"I'm sorry, Kaku." My shoulders dropped. "I just really don't want to be alone anymore. But…" I looked up in your eyes with a smile as tears fell. "I can't break my promise to him."

Kakucho's POV

He watched as the first few tears fell before deciding to be someone he chose to be for once. For her. He pulled her into his arms with the gentlest hug he could muster. He held her close as her body shook with sobs and as she told him not only what happened, but just how hurt she was, all while insisting she understood why he would say such a thing.

There was only one big problem with that.

She really believed he meant it. He lied but she believed he wasn't lying.

He held her for who knows how long listening to her fears and wishes. His heart broke for her when she began talking about her best friend Emma, guilt coursing through his veins. Even then, she didn't pull away or scream at him. She stayed buried in his chest, until nothing but soft sniffles could be heard.

He had listened to everything with intense patience and let the silence hang in the air while he tried to gather his thoughts. He felt her suddenly start to pull away while muttering apologies. "I'm sorry. I guess I proved crying a river is a real thing, huh?" She tried to smile but he could still see through it easily.

"If you're hurting, tell me. Share it with me. I can't correct everything, but I can walk with you when things feel impossible. Let me do this for you, hmm?" Seeing her façade drop once again wasn't something he cherished, but he knew she needed a safe place. He didn't let go, wiping away her tears as they fell down her cheeks.
