Chapter 30 - The Final Descent

The control room erupted into chaos. Screams filled the air as infected creatures, twisted by Voss's horrific experiment, flooded the space. They were fast, their movements erratic and savage, but there was something chillingly methodical about their assault. It was as if they knew exactly what they were doing—hunting, attacking, and taking no prisoners.

Jacob pushed Mara ahead, his pulse pounding in his ears. His mind raced as he glanced back toward the control room, the once-familiar space now a battleground. Lena—*his Lena*—was lost to the infection. Her eyes, once filled with hope, now glowed with an unnatural light. The woman he had once trusted, fought beside, and shared dreams with was gone, consumed by the madness of Voss's creation.

But there was no time to mourn. There was no time to look back.

"Move!" Jacob shouted, his voice barely audible over the shrieks and growls of the infected. "We can't stop here. Keep moving!"

The survivors dashed down the corridor, the sound of pounding footsteps echoing behind them. Jacob's heart raced as he pushed himself forward, the weight of his decision pressing down on him. Every step he took seemed to carry the weight of the world. They were trapped in a labyrinth, and the walls were closing in.

Behind them, the infected were closing the distance. Their eyes, gleaming with hunger, were fixed on their prey. The bloodthirsty creatures were relentless, their speed unnatural, and their senses sharpened by the mutation. Jacob's mind raced as he considered the possibilities. The complex was vast, but so were the dangers within it. Escape was not guaranteed. Not unless they could outsmart Voss and his creations.

"We need to get to the main exit," Mara shouted, her voice cutting through the panic. "There's a service tunnel that leads outside. We can escape through there!"

Jacob nodded, barely processing her words. His mind was focused on one thing: survival. They couldn't afford to be caught, not by Lena, not by Voss's army. Every corner they turned, every hallway they entered, felt like a death trap waiting to spring. They were out of options, and yet, somehow, they had to keep moving.

The light from the flickering overhead lamps cast grotesque shadows along the walls. The complex, once a place of sterile technology, now felt like a tomb. The air was thick with the smell of decay, and the faint sound of distant growls was a constant reminder of the horrors that awaited them.

"Left!" Jacob barked, pulling Mara to one side as the group rounded a corner. The sound of heavy footsteps followed them, closing in with each passing second.

But something felt off. The silence that had fallen over the group, the way the infected had seemed to grow quiet for a brief moment—it was too perfect. Too calm.

Jacob's heart skipped a beat.

"Wait," he whispered, his instincts screaming at him to stop.

"What's wrong?" Mara asked, her voice trembling with fear.

Jacob's gaze swept the hallway ahead. There was something there, a flicker of movement in the shadows. Something—*someone*—was waiting.

Before he could react, the air was torn apart by a sudden roar. The ground beneath them shook as something massive barreled toward them from the darkness. The walls cracked, and the ceiling above them groaned in protest.

A figure emerged from the shadows, its eyes burning with fury. It was larger than any of the infected they had seen before, its form twisted and inhuman, a grotesque blend of man and monster. The creature's muscles bulged unnaturally, its skin stretched tight over a grotesque frame.

And then Jacob saw its face.

It was Dr. Voss.

But it wasn't the same Voss they had seen before. This Voss was something far worse. His body had been contorted by the mutation, growing to an unnatural size. His features were barely recognizable—his skin a sickly shade of green, his eyes now a glowing red, and his mouth was twisted into a grotesque grin, filled with sharp, jagged teeth.

"This is the end for you, Jacob," Voss's voice rasped, now an eerie blend of human and monstrous growl. "You can run all you want, but it won't matter. You'll never escape me."

The ground trembled again as Voss lunged toward them with terrifying speed. Jacob barely had time to react before the monstrous figure collided with the wall beside them, sending dust and debris flying through the air. The force of the impact shook the entire hallway, and for a moment, Jacob's ears rang with the deafening sound of destruction.

The survivors staggered back, fear and panic flooding their senses.

"Run!" Jacob shouted, his voice breaking the silence.

Without a second thought, they turned and fled down the hallway, but Voss's growl echoed behind them. He was faster now, the mutation giving him speed and strength far beyond that of any human.

"We won't make it," Mara gasped, her breathing heavy. "We can't outrun him."

Jacob's mind raced. He had to think. There had to be a way to stop him, to defeat him. But as they turned another corner, his heart sank. They had reached a dead end.

"There's nowhere left to go," Mara said, her voice trembling with disbelief.

Jacob spun around, his back pressed against the cold metal wall. The others were close behind, their faces etched with fear. Voss was coming for them. They could hear his heavy footsteps, growing louder with each passing second. There was no escape.

Suddenly, a voice pierced through the silence. It was low, familiar.

"Jacob…"

Jacob's heart skipped a beat as he turned toward the sound.

There, standing in the shadows, was Lena.

Her form was distorted, but the faintest trace of her human self remained. She was still infected, but there was something in her eyes—something that still resembled the woman he had once known.

"Lena?" Jacob whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of hope and despair.

She stepped forward, her movements slow and deliberate. Her eyes locked with his.

"You have to stop him, Jacob," she said softly, her voice distant. "He's not just a man anymore. He's the end of everything."

Jacob felt a chill run down his spine. "What do you mean?"

"The infection… it's not just in our blood," Lena whispered. "It's in our minds. He's become the virus itself. And unless you can stop him here, everything will fall."

As she spoke, Voss's growl grew louder, his monstrous form closing in on them.

"Run," Lena whispered, stepping back into the shadows. "I'll hold him off."

And with those final words, she disappeared into the darkness.

Jacob's heart pounded. There was no time to waste. They had to finish this, now.
