The Veil of Elaria
---
The woods were unnaturally quiet that night. Kira Alden tightened her scarf against the biting cold, her breath forming wispy clouds that vanished into the still air. The forest path she had walked countless times now felt alien, as though every tree leaned closer, its skeletal branches reaching for her.
The lantern in her hand flickered, casting erratic shadows across the trail. She stopped, straining her ears. No birds. No wind. Not even the usual rustle of nocturnal creatures. Just silence.
Until she heard the snap of a twig.
Her heart jumped. "Hello?" she called, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nothing answered.
Kira quickened her pace, clutching the lantern so tightly her knuckles turned white. She wasn't superstitious, but the stories her grandmother used to tell—the ones about the things that roamed the forest after dark—suddenly felt far too real.
Another sound—a low, guttural growl—sent her heart racing. She turned, the lantern swinging wildly, its light revealing nothing but darkness and twisted roots.
Then it emerged.
A creature unlike anything Kira had ever seen. It stood on two legs but was hunched, its elongated arms brushing the ground. Its eyes glowed a sickly green, and its mouth stretched into a jagged grin filled with needle-like teeth. The shadows clung to its body like a second skin, rippling and shifting as though alive.
Kira froze.
The creature lunged.
She barely managed to stumble back, tripping over a root and falling hard onto the frozen ground. The lantern shattered beside her, plunging the world into darkness. The creature loomed over her, its glowing eyes burning into her soul.
Instinct took over. Kira raised her hands to shield herself, expecting the end. Instead, a burst of light erupted from her palms, blinding the creature and sending it screeching into the shadows.
For a moment, Kira lay there, staring at her hands, which still crackled with faint tendrils of energy.
"What...?" she whispered, but before she could process what had happened, a voice cut through the darkness.
"Stay down!"
A figure darted past her, cloaked in flowing black robes. They moved with inhuman speed, their hands glowing with the same strange energy Kira had just unleashed. In a flurry of light and shadow, the creature let out a final, earsplitting shriek before disintegrating into nothingness.
The figure turned to her, their face hidden beneath a hood. "You're coming with me," they said, their voice calm but firm.
"What? No, I'm not—"
"You just used Veil energy. If you stay here, you'll attract more of them. You're not safe."
Before Kira could argue, the figure grabbed her wrist. The world tilted, and in an instant, the forest dissolved around her, replaced by towering spires and glowing orbs of light.

Chapter 2: The Academy
Kira stumbled, the ground beneath her feet suddenly solid and unfamiliar. She looked up, blinking in disbelief.
She stood in a grand courtyard surrounded by gothic buildings, their stone walls etched with glowing runes. The air hummed with energy, and strange, shimmering creatures flitted between the spires.
"Welcome to Elaria Academy," the hooded figure said, pulling back their hood to reveal a sharp-featured woman with piercing silver eyes. "I'm Professor Grey."
Kira stared at her, struggling to form words. "What... what just happened? Where am I?"
"The place where you belong," Grey replied. "Though that remains to be seen."
Before Kira could demand answers, a group of students approached, their curious gazes fixed on her.
"Another stray?" one of them remarked, a tall boy with jet-black hair and an infuriating smirk.
"Lucian," Grey said sharply. "Don't scare the new arrival."
Kira glared at him. "I'm not scared."
"Sure you're not," Lucian said, his smirk widening.
"Enough," Grey interrupted. "Kira, come with me. There's much to explain."
Reluctantly, Kira followed Grey through the arched halls of the academy. The walls pulsed with faint light, as though alive, and the air buzzed with whispered conversations she couldn't quite make out.
"This is a school for those with unique gifts," Grey began. "People like you, who can manipulate Veil energy."
"I don't even know what that is," Kira said.
"You will," Grey replied. "Veil energy is the lifeblood of the barrier that separates our world from The Veil. The creatures you saw tonight come from that realm. It's our duty to keep them at bay."
Kira frowned. "Why me? I've never done anything like that before."
"Not consciously, perhaps. But your powers awakened tonight for a reason. The Veil is thinning, and we need every capable individual to help maintain the balance."
As they entered a vast chamber filled with glowing artifacts and ancient books, Kira's mind raced. She wanted to believe this was all a dream, but the memory of the creature's glowing eyes and the power that had surged through her hands felt all too real.
