Chapter 23 - School Trips

School Trip Announcement

The buzz of chatter filled the school auditorium as students filed in, their conversations blending into an indistinguishable hum of excitement and curiosity. Layla sat near the back, her arms crossed and her head tilted slightly as she observed the chaos. Her seat provided the perfect vantage point to watch her classmates shuffle around, some gossiping, others craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the stage. The principal, Mr. Henderson, stood at the podium, tapping the microphone to test it.

"Settle down, everyone," his voice boomed, cutting through the noise like a whip. The murmurs subsided, and the students began taking their seats, though the occasional whisper persisted here and there. Layla sighed, her usual skepticism settling in. Whatever this was, it better be good.

Jace, sitting next to her, leaned in and whispered, "What do you think this is about? Another boring lecture?"

"Probably," Layla replied with a smirk. "Maybe it's about staying off social media during school hours or something equally thrilling."

Jace chuckled. "Can't wait."

Finally, Mr. Henderson cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses. "Good morning, students. I'm sure you're all wondering why you've been gathered here today."

"Here it comes," Jace muttered, earning a nudge from Layla.

"I'm pleased to announce that our school is organizing a field trip!" Henderson's announcement was met with a collective gasp, followed by a surge of excited whispers. Layla's eyebrows shot up. This wasn't the boring lecture she'd anticipated.

"A trip?" she murmured, glancing at Jace.

"Finally, something interesting," he replied, sitting up straighter.

Mr. Henderson continued, his tone laced with what could only be described as forced enthusiasm. "This year, the destination is Ravenwood Lake. It's a scenic location known for its beautiful hiking trails, boating activities, and nature exploration. We believe it will be an enriching experience for everyone."

The students erupted into chatter, the auditorium buzzing with renewed energy. Layla's interest piqued slightly. Ravenwood Lake sounded… decent. She'd heard about the place—a quiet, picturesque area surrounded by lush forests. Not her usual scene, but maybe it could be a nice change of pace.

"The trip will take place two weeks from now, and it will be a two-day excursion. You'll be staying overnight in cabins near the lake," Mr. Henderson added, holding up a hand to silence the students. "Now, before you get too excited, let me go over some important details."

Layla tuned out as he began listing the rules and guidelines—no wandering off, no swimming without supervision, no loud music after curfew. The usual drill. Her mind wandered to the idea of spending a night away from home, surrounded by classmates she mostly tolerated. Well, at least she'd have Jace and Annie to keep things interesting.

"Hey," Jace whispered, nudging her arm. "Are you actually considering going?"

Layla shrugged. "Maybe. Depends on how strict they are about the whole 'no wandering off' thing."

He grinned. "If we go, we're definitely finding a way to sneak out after curfew."

She smirked, her rebellious streak already itching at the thought. "You're on."

As the announcement continued, Layla's thoughts drifted. The idea of a trip didn't seem so bad, especially if it meant escaping the monotony of school life for a couple of days. And who knew? Maybe it would give her a chance to clear her head, to get away from… everything.

Mr. Henderson's voice pulled her back to the present. "Permission slips will be handed out during homeroom, and they must be signed and returned by the end of the week."

Layla made a mental note to grab one, though she wasn't entirely sure if she'd actually bother getting it signed. Her mom probably wouldn't care, but her dad… well, that was a different story. She wasn't sure how he'd react to her going on a school trip, especially one that involved an overnight stay. Not that it mattered—she'd figure it out.

As the students began to file out of the auditorium, Layla and Jace lingered near the back, letting the crowd thin out before making their way to the door. "So, Ravenwood Lake, huh?" Jace said, slinging his backpack over one shoulder. "Think it'll be as scenic as they say?"

Layla shrugged. "Guess we'll find out."

They walked down the hallway, the buzz of excitement still lingering in the air. Students were already making plans, talking about who they'd share cabins with and what activities they wanted to do. Layla couldn't help but roll her eyes at some of the more dramatic conversations.

"Oh my god, we have to coordinate outfits for the trip!" one girl squealed to her friend.

"Outfits? For a lake?" Layla muttered under her breath, earning a laugh from Jace.

"Some people just have different priorities," he said with a shrug.

They reached their lockers, and Layla grabbed her books for the next class. "You think Annie's going to be up for this?" she asked.

"Annie's up for anything that involves group activities," Jace replied.

As the day went on, the trip announcement became the hot topic of conversation. By lunch, the cafeteria was abuzz with excitement. Layla sat with Jace and Annie at their usual table, poking at her food as they discussed the trip.

"So, are we doing this or what?" Annie asked, her eyes darting between them.

"I'm in," Jace said without hesitation. "What about you, Lay?"

Layla hesitated, twirling her fork in her salad. "I don't know. I'll think about it."

Annie frowned. "Come on, Layla. It'll be fun."

"Yeah, Lay," Jace chimed in. "Think of it as an adventure. You love adventures."

She rolled her eyes. "Fine. I'll go. But only if you two promise not to let me die of boredom."

"Deal," Annie said with a grin. "This is going to be epic."

Layla wasn't so sure about the whole "epic" part, but at least it would be something different. And maybe, just maybe, it would be the kind of distraction she needed.
