Chapter 156 - Chapter 152: "Puffin-palypse Now"

The ground quaked beneath their feet as the massive puffin guardian descended. Its feathered form radiated an almost comical mix of divine menace and adorableness, making it difficult for the group to take the threat seriously.

"BEHOLD, I AM PUFFZILLA, GUARDIAN OF THE CREST!" the puffin boomed, its voice echoing dramatically through the cavern.

Kazuya squinted. "It's hard to be scared of something that looks like it's about to audition for a kid's cereal commercial."

The puffin glared at him, its eyes glowing brighter. "INSULT ME AGAIN, MORTAL, AND I SHALL RAIN UNHOLY GUANO UPON YOU!"

Sylvara slapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh. Ravynne wasn't as successful, snorting loudly.

The Puffin's Challenge

"Enough of this foolishness!" Puffzilla declared, flapping its enormous wings. "If you wish to claim the Crest of the Ancients, you must prove yourselves worthy by passing the Trial of Ultimate Coordination!"

Kazuya groaned. "Why does every ancient guardian have a trial? Can't one of them just hand over the artifact and say, 'Good luck saving the world'?"

"SHUSH, UNWORTHY ONE!" Puffzilla bellowed. "THE TRIAL COMMENCES NOW!"

Trial One: Synchronize or Sink

The group found themselves on a floating platform suspended above a bubbling pool of neon-green liquid. Smaller platforms hovered nearby, each with a series of levers, buttons, and spinning wheels.

"The task is simple," Puffzilla announced. "Synchronize your movements to power the ancient mechanism, or plummet to your doom!"

"Simple, he says," Sylvara muttered, eyeing the contraption warily.

What followed was twenty minutes of absolute chaos:

Kazuya repeatedly hit the wrong lever, causing their platform to spin wildly. Sylvara tried to correct his mistakes with magic, only to accidentally conjure a chicken that kept pecking at the buttons. Ravynne maintained perfect coordination, but her increasingly sarcastic commentary did little to improve morale.

"Honestly, how are you both this bad at basic coordination?" she snapped, dodging a stray spark from Sylvara's spell.

"Sorry, not all of us were trained in ancient puffin obstacle courses!" Kazuya shot back.

Trial Two: The Puffin Feud

Having somehow survived the first trial, the group was transported to a stage where Puffzilla announced the next challenge: The Puffin Feud, a trivia game show where the contestants had to answer questions about puffin history and culture.

A spotlight illuminated the group as they faced off against a team of three fiercely competitive puffins wearing bowties.

"What is happening?" Kazuya whispered.

"Shh, just roll with it," Sylvara replied.

The host, a puffin in a sparkling tuxedo, began the game.

"First question! What is the capital of the Puffin Kingdom?"

Sylvara buzzed in. "Uh… Puffington?"

"CORRECT!" the host cheered.

Ravynne leaned over. "How did you know that?"

"Lucky guess," Sylvara whispered.

The game quickly devolved into madness as Kazuya accidentally answered a question in the form of a chicken cluck, confusing everyone, and Ravynne became locked in a heated debate with a puffin over the proper pronunciation of "guano."

Trial Three: The Dance of Destiny Redux

The final trial brought them back to the cavern's main chamber, where Puffzilla declared that they must perform the legendary Dance of Destiny to awaken the Crest.

"Not this again," Kazuya groaned.

"DO YOU MOCK THE SACRED DANCE?!" Puffzilla roared.

"No, no," Kazuya said quickly. "Just… do we at least get instructions this time?"

The Grand Finale

As mystical music filled the cavern, the group attempted to follow Puffzilla's increasingly absurd dance moves:

Kazuya tripped over his own feet and somehow ended up doing the chicken dance. Sylvara incorporated magic into her routine, accidentally creating a glowing puffin hologram that upstaged the entire performance. Ravynne performed flawlessly, earning a standing ovation from the Poultrypunks watching from the sidelines.

Despite their many missteps, the Crest of the Ancients began to glow, signifying their success.

The Revelation

With a dramatic flap of its wings, Puffzilla handed over the Crest. "You have proven yourselves worthy, though barely. Take the Crest and fulfill your destiny."

As the group exited the cavern, Kazuya glanced at Sylvara. "So, what's the plan for the next artifact?"

Sylvara smirked. "Hopefully, it doesn't involve any more puffins."

Little did they know, their next adventure would involve something far worse: The Quest for the Sacred Duckbill.
