Chapter 39 - Chapter 37: Devils won't cry

The group continues throughout the facility, ready for more action, until the building shakes again, and someone is sent crashing through several walls! It's the nun from earlier, and a massive red demon towers over her. The creature stands well over twelve feet tall, incredibly muscular—like a certain green superhero—and its massive horns twist and turn ominously.

Sunny quickly uses her psychic abilities to yank the nun toward her before slamming her hand on the ground.

"Iron Wall!" she shouts at the top of her lungs.

She quickly looks to the nun. "You! What the hell is going on!?"

Jolene, still terrified, stammers, "Th-there's an Archdemon here."

Sunny's eyes widen. She looks at the nun and nods. "Heard you loud and clear."

Turning to face the group, she takes a deep breath. "Alright, new plan—Las Vegas is screwed. We might have to leave."

Luna's eyes widen in shock. "Shouldn't we stay and fight?"

Sunny quickly shakes her head. "Luna, sweetheart, an Archdemon could mean the death of millions—if not an entire country. They are not to be trifled with."

Luna now looks terrified as she sees the demon punch a hole through the iron wall Sunny had created.

Sunny quickly unsheathes her blade, muttering a chant as vibrant light coats its surface. She slashes at the demon's hand before erecting another iron wall.

"Move!" she orders, and the group follows suit, sprinting down the hall.

Behind them, the demon lets out a wicked laugh. "Oh, I love it when my prey runs from me."

Jolene shouts, "So you're just going to run!?"

Sunny looks at her and nods. "My team doesn't have an answer to that thing back there—let alone an Archdemon."

Tera, running with the group, tilts her head, her ears twitching. "Why can't we fight the big red man back there?"

JJ looks at her. "Tera, that's a red demon—or, more specifically, a commander. We don't have holy items to kill it, or holy kinesis, or holy magic."

Tera's ears twitch again. "So, how do I get holy claws? Will that work?"

JJ sighs. "Sure, kid. If you get 'holy claws,' then that should work."

Then, a massive sound echoes through the halls as the group runs. The nun panics. "I can bless your weapons! I can bless all of your magic! Please, I need your help!"

Sunny raises an eyebrow at the woman's remark. "We can't just fight an Archdemon. That commander back there? Maybe. An Archdemon? Hell no, not a chance."

The nun now looks at her with anger. "We need to exterminate these unholy monsters!"

Sunny glares at the nun. "Really? Our job is to deal with the wendigos, not kill demons and devils. Now, this hunt has become a little too dangerous, so why should I put my team's life on the line? I would love to stay and save people here, yes, but that's Sanctum's job. What we can do is contact Sanctum so we can get reinforcements—like I told you to do in the first place."

Luna looks at Sunny. "I mean, shouldn't we at least attempt to help?"

Sunny sighs. "Luna, look, I would love to stay and help, and I'm not saying y'all can't handle any of these demons. However, to my knowledge, y'all haven't fought demons of this caliber, and you need proper training to face them. A low-ranking demon? A weak or mid-range devil? A hopeless case? Sure, any of you could take one. But I don't want to risk any of you getting killed—even you, Tera. Though we just met, I'm not going to sacrifice you or anyone. Being a hunter means you have to pick and choose your battles."

Luna, with a saddened look on her face, nods. "Alright, that makes sense."

Sunny grits her teeth as a cross appears in her hand. The nun's eyes widen. "Wait!" Jolene shouts, but Sunny ignores her and stabs the cross into the ground.

The group looks on in confusion. "What did you do?"

Suddenly, Father Frederick appears, looking around. "Oh, Sunny, is there something you need?"

Sunny's eye twitches. "Yes, according to Sister Jolene here, there might be an Arch Demon."

His smile quickly fades. "I see… Sunny, thank you for swallowing your pride and asking me for help. And I'm sorry I didn't pick up the phone." He then turns to face Jolene, his expression darkening into a scowl as he leans toward her. "Jolene, you should have requested more help. Has your hubris gotten in the way again?"

The nun slowly nods her head.

"I see. We will discuss this more later."

As they speak, the demon has caught up to them, and the group gets ready to fight. However, Frederick conjures a cross and points it at the demon.

"Begone, foul demon! Back to Hell with you!" he shouts.

The group watches in shock as several crosses, which no one had noticed before, begin to glow. They float around the demon, and a golden light engulfs it. As quickly as it had arrived, the demon vanishes.

Luna turns to Father Frederick. "What did you do?"

He smiles. "I sent it back to Hell. Believe it or not, I dislike killing. I prefer to take a peaceful approach rather than a wicked one."

He looks to Sunny. "Sunny, I would also like to speak with you later… about the past."

Sunny sighs. "Alright, we can talk later."

Frederick places a hand on Sunny's shoulder. "Do me a favor. I know it might seem dangerous, but I could use your help here. I will handle the Arch Demon and then double back to help you all with the wendigos. I understand how you feel, so I will have Sister Jolene stay with your group to assist in the fighting. Do not worry—she is capable of healing magic and is a skilled light kinesis user, so she can assist quite well."

Sunny grits her teeth. "I guess we can help… but still—no fighting demons! None of them! I don't want to see a single demon fighting my team at all!"

Despite Sunny's hostility, Father Frederick continues to smile. "Of course, Sunny. I can't give you my word, but I will do everything in my power to make sure your team does not run into any demons or devils at all!"

Sunny nods. "Fine. Team, we're heading to where the chief wendigo is, and we're going to kill it. Got it? If any of you encounter a demon, avoid it. Understood?"

The group nods in agreement, while Jolene's eye twitches. Forced to work with these people, she knows she's in for a long night in the city of sin.
