Lyra's POV
The tears wouldn't stop.
I sat on the edge of my bed, my body trembling as sobs wracked my chest. My head throbbed from crying so much, and my throat burned from the strain. I hated feeling this weak, hated how the pain seemed to swallow me whole, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop.
I tried reaching Kael through the mind link, hoping—praying—that he'd hear me. But every time I called out to him, I was met with silence. He had shut me out completely.
It was like he had locked a door between us and thrown away the key.
The ache in my chest deepened, and a fresh wave of tears spilled down my cheeks. I clutched the pillow beside me, burying my face into it to muffle the sound of my cries. It felt like the entire world had turned against me.
And now, Kael—the one person who had promised to be there for me—was gone too.
