Chapter 49 - Tournament end: Part 2

I saw that some people were confused on why the guy died. I just wanted to clear up that anything under the abilities tab needs to be activated; passive effects are extremely rare and usually only come from gear. Also, the magic lighting is more like real lightning then firebending lightning is, so it's harder to deal with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Illusion stood at the railing of the private box "Observers, welcome back to the next round of this bracket, I hope you have all had time to process the unfortunate event and send your sympathies to his family" the only family he had was an estranged son who was sent a large portion of coins and a decorative sword "Now onto the next round"

The referee walked into the arena "Our first fight this round is Xuh Pe an earth=bender from the earth kingdom army of Omashu. Since his arrival he has yet to leave the tower, his dedication impresses his strength even more impressive" he said gesturing to a bulky man with tattoos of a bull on his bald head. "Our next participant is a magic user of great power, little is known about this mysterious mage but what we do know is that his power is potentially unmatched" he then announced gesturing to me.

I stared at my opponent, a simple wooden staff in my hand.

"Fighters get ready"

My opponent was sizing me up looking from my feet to my head trying to discern anything about me but the transformation ability made that difficult.

"Hai"

My opponent was the first to mov using two abilities: golem and earth weapons. Rocks and stone started to cover his form as his body grew two feet and earth became like armor surrounding him entirely except for the slit on his face for his eyes. I decided to let him finish his transformation. Next a pillar of earth rose from the ground and chucks started to fall off until it took the shape of a giant glaive.

"Are you done?" I asked.

Not answering he grabbed then started running at me, the ground shook at his approach, his massive weight making the ground crack open. As he arrived in front of me he brought his weapon into a diagonal slash. He cut through my form but it was too late. That was only an illusion.

"Sinkhole" I commanded.

The ground turned soft as a whole opened in the ground taking everything with it and trapping my opponent halfway.

"Earthquake" he yelled out.

The ground began to shake as it split apart forcing jagged rocks to spear up at random. I had to teleport out of the way of a few so as to not get hit.

"That's quite clever" I said as Xuh Pe used the broken ground to pull his large form out.

"Ahhh" he yelled as he ran at me with his weapon coming down where I was standing.

Raising a hand a blue shield stopped the weapons battering it to pebbles.

"Gravity well" holding up my hand I invoked the spell.

The effect was immediately noticeable as his form crashed into the ground, his stone armor cracking under the increased gravity.

"You did quite well but this is the end" I said, placing the butt of my stuff onto the stone head of his golem body "Negate".

His armor cracked as it fell away turning into dust on the wind. The surprise was evident on his face as he tried again and again to activate an ability.

"It won't work, your abilities have all been negated, you can't use them. Now sleep" Invoking another spell I knocked him out cold for the next ten minutes.

"Emrys is the winner," the referee announced.

Taking a quick bow to the crowd I made my way into the participants' waiting room, ready for the next match to start. Since no one had been seriously injured it should still start on schedule.

"I don't recognize you?"

Turning I saw Goshen standing just a few feet from me "I wouldn't expect you to, I am not part of the guild"

"Everyone is part of the guild" Goshen said, giving me a hard stare.

"Obviously not"

"You are powerful"

"So are you, at least for your level"

Narrowing his eyes Goshen asked "What level are you"

Giving him a sly smile I said "that's a bit personnel don't you think"

"I am charged with the adventurers guild every climber must join"

"Who said I was a climber?" Goshen just looked confused after I said that.

"Participants, are you ready?" the referee asked entering the room.

"Yes," we said simultaneously.

"Then get to the arena, please enter on opposite sides" he explained.

When Goshen turned back I was already out of the room entering the arena, a few seconds later Goshen entered on the other side.

The Ref walked to the center of the arena starting his announcements "Welcome everyone to the last round of the tournament, the past few days we have seen the best each nation has to offer and we. were. Not. let. Down" he accented each word "Now we have our two finalists, Emrys the mysterious mage who appeared as if by magic and the legendary Master of the adventurers guild Goshen. Whoever wins this round will not only receive a property in minas tirith but a unique reward as well. Now fighters get ready...Hai".

I was the first to move this time, sending out a firebolt directly at Goshen but he matched it by sending the same spell crashing into mine. An explosion rocked the stadium as the two spells cancelled one another out. I saw the smoke part as an invisible blade cut through, bringing up a mana shield the wind blade rolled off.

"Impressive" I commented.

"Same" Goshen replied.

Lifting my staff I sent out a concussive blast at Goshen, he barely got a shield up in time sending him sprawling back trying to maintain his footing.

"Mage bolt," Gauche yelled.

A large concentration of magic collected in Goshen's hand then shot out like a rocket. Raising one hand I caught the spell, then closed my hand around it dispersing the magic.

"How did you…" Goshen started.

"Gravity well" I commanded and Goshen was immediately pushed into the ground barely able to move. I slowly walked over to him "You did quite well but not well enough"

The closer I got the more whispering I heard from him.

"What was that"

"LIGHTNING BOLT" Goshen yelled.

Lifting my staff an overcharged lightning bolt slammed into it. The sound defended all those in the nearest stands and the light blinded everyone for but a moment. As the light disappeared I looked at my staff. Only a bit was left in my hand, the rest had been charred and broken, it was quite impressive he had the power to do this, the staff was made to be quite good even on the fiftieth floor.

"Impressive indeed" I said looking down at the passed out Goshen.

"Emrys is the win.." the referee started,

"I forfeit"

The referee was stunned looking at me like he had started hearing things.

"What was that?"

"I forfeit, he wins"

The referee paused for a moment then announced "Goshen is the winner by forfeit"

Healers entered the arena running over to Goshen checking his condition. He was fine and really just used too much magic at once, overloading both body and brain. He would normally be fine after a week of bed rest.

"Allow me" I leaned down placing my hand on Goshen's chest "Transfer, quick rest" I cast the two spells.

Some of my own magic entered Goshen giving him just enough to recover and quick rest helped heal his mental exhaustion.

"What happened?" Goshen asked, waking up.

"I forfeit, you won" I explained.

Hearing what I had said Goshen sat up straight asking "What? Why?"

"I never intended on winning, I just wanted to have some fun," I explained.

My illusion teleported onto the field announcing "It is time for the rewards"

The crowd went wild at that and while people were distracted I used illusions to switch places with my copy.

"That feels better being in my own body" I said to myself. Then I pointed at an elf "Go get the other fighter will you"

"Yes, my lord" he said, going off to do what I asked.

A few moments later Xuh Pe came out of the waiting room and joined the three people at the center of the arena.

Using magic to amplify my voice I stood in front of Xuh Pe "As the third-place winner you have earned yourself some experience"

"Thank you, my lord," he said, disappointed at his own performance.

"Despite this though your ability combination was quite impressive so I have a gift for you" quickly making an item I pulled it out. It was a silver ring with a brown gemstone settled on the top "here"

"Thank you my lord" he said bowing.

"This ring allows you to breath in almost any environment, it will allow you to fill out those cracks in your armor without suffocating yourself" I explained then I moved over to my clone "Emrys you did quite well"

"Thank you"

"I believe I already know what you want" I quickly crafted a new staff, this one was made from white wood and had a basket of branches on the top. "I believe this will do"

"Thank you, my lord," it said.

Looking at the crowd I announced, "Now it is time for your champion".

The crowd went wild cheering his name, the fight was apparently entertaining as some fire nation people were screaming his name.

Approaching Goshen I asked "The reward for first place is a familiar or unique ability which do you choose"

"What is a familiar?" he asked.

"It is a creature bonded to you, it grows stronger as you do and vice versa. If the bond becomes strong enough you could see other benefits as well".

"The unique ability?"

"You would tell me what kind of ability you want, and I would do my best to provide you with it"

The crowd waited in anticipation as he thought on what to do, both seemed like good options but she could only choose one.

"I would like the familiar"

That was faster than expected "Alright then"

Opening my monster creation tab I looked at the options I had made in preparation, finally I settled on one. It looked like a cross of an owl, a bat and a lizard, it had two horns forming a sort of crown on its head as well as spikes going down its back. It also had a long tail ending in two fins like protrusions. To top it off it had four wings instead of two making it extremely maneuverable in the air. It only had two legs as it used it's larger set of wings like hands.

[Would you like to summon your custom creature]

[Would you like to bond it with: Goshen]

"Yes, and yes" I spoke aloud. The creature appeared on my forearm. "This is your reward"

Holding out his arm the creature flew over to Goshen's landing on it "What is it?"

"It is called a Shrike; they are famous for ripping their prey apart and impaling their bodies on beaches around their nest". He looked a bit sick at my explanation.

"They are good recognizance and that is a fledgling, although you will never ride it will get to be about the size of a kid. I figured as a mage you might want something that can fill multiple rolls"

"Thank you Tower, Master,"

"I believe you are also owed this" I said handing him a deed "It is for a property on the outskirts of the city, not very big but it is quite nice"

"Again, thank you Tower Master"

At that point Arin came through the arena walking straight up to me whispering in my ear "The procedure is done; it will take a few days to set in, but she will be able to wake up by the end of the week".

Giving him a nod I turned back to the crowd "Thank you all for participating and watching the tournament, I look forward to the next one but for now I bid thee farewell. Remember all are welcome in the tower" then I left the arena teleporting back to my city.
