Chapter 26 - Small Steps

Tuesday morning started like any other, except Sophie felt a strange undercurrent in the air—like the world was holding its breath. She had spent most of the night staring at her phone, Claire's contact glowing like a ghost from the past.

By the time she walked into school, her decision still felt uncertain. She wasn't ready to make a grand gesture, but maybe... just maybe, a small step wouldn't hurt.

Jason caught up with her near the lockers. "Hey, did you finish the English paper?"

"Barely," Sophie said, stifling a yawn.

Jason chuckled. "You look like you pulled an all-nighter."

"Feels like it," Sophie admitted.

Before Jason could respond, a familiar voice echoed down the hall.

"Sophie!"

Sophie turned to see Claire approaching, her expression hopeful but cautious. It was the first time Claire had approached her at school since their awkward reunion over the weekend.

"Hey," Claire said when she reached Sophie's locker.

"Hi," Sophie replied, glancing at Jason. He gave her a reassuring nod before quietly stepping away.

"I was hoping we could talk," Claire said, fiddling with the strap of her bag.

"Here?" Sophie asked, gesturing to the bustling hallway.

Claire smiled sheepishly. "Maybe somewhere quieter?"

Sophie hesitated, then sighed. "Fine. The library?"

Claire nodded, relief washing over her face.

The library was nearly empty, the faint smell of books and old wood adding to the atmosphere. Sophie led them to a corner table, her arms crossed as she sat down.

Claire sat across from her, looking nervous for the first time in their long friendship. "Thanks for giving me a chance," she said.

Sophie shrugged. "Let's just... talk. What's on your mind?"

Claire exhaled, her gaze dropping to the table. "I know I hurt you, Sophie. And I don't expect things to go back to the way they were. But I really want to try."

Sophie leaned back, studying her former best friend. "Why now? After all this time, why come back?"

Claire's face softened. "Because I missed you. And because I realized running away didn't solve anything. You were always there for me, Sophie, and I want to be there for you now—if you'll let me."

Sophie's heart ached at the sincerity in Claire's voice. She wanted to believe her, but trust wasn't something that came easily anymore.

"Look," Sophie said slowly, "I'm not saying I forgive you. But maybe... we can start small. See where it goes."

Claire's face lit up. "I'll take it. Anything. Thank you."

That afternoon, Sophie sat in her favorite spot in the courtyard, a sense of cautious optimism settling over her. Claire's return wasn't something she had planned for, but maybe it was a chance to learn, to grow, and to see if the past could coexist with the present.

Jason found her there, dropping his bag next to hers. "How'd it go with Claire?"

Sophie smiled faintly. "We talked. It's... a start."

Jason grinned. "That's all you can ask for."

As they sat there, Sophie felt a glimmer of hope. Life wasn't perfect, but it didn't have to be. Sometimes, small steps were enough.
