It was a rainy day, with trees covered in water and the pouring rainfall pattering on the ground. The Earth Kingdom City of Lao Shai was lit up with numerous lights spreading across the city. Not as many people are out wandering the city as usual due to the rain.
"And remember, don't forget the bread while out there. We need some for the sandwiches." A women says to her son, she has a white complexion with grey eyes indicating blindness, and long brown hair that reaches the middle of her 5'8 height, she looks middle aged, around 35. Her son, although carrying some of those same features, has some other features as well. He is taller, about 5'11, not very long brown hair, but hair that reaches to his neck. He has green eyes and a look of confidence in his face.
"Aye aye mom, I'll be back in a few." The boy says, flashing a smile before leaving with his umbrella. He starts jogging to the bakery, hoping that he can get out of the rain for a couple of minutes there.
"Damn, they're closed." He says before scratching his head. It looks like a bright idea occurs in his head as he pulls out a lockpick from his pockets and unlocks the door. He then opens the door as quietly and slowly as he can without making much more noise.
The boy then walks to the stores bread before taking a loaf, he leaves the amount of money it would take for the bread if the store was open, because he quite likes this bakery. He leaves the bakery and locks the door, and then heads back to his house with his mother.
The door to the house opens as he walks through it.
"Hey mom, I'm back." The boy says absentmindedly as he sets the loaf down on the table.
"Okay, well I'll get started on dinner in a few, get out of those wet clothes and get ready." She commands him as she walks out of the kitchen.
"Okay mom." He says before walking into his bedroom to get ready.
A few minutes later he walks to the kitchen to help his mom with making the sandwiches.
"I've always wondered how you were so good at understanding what you have in your hands when you make food mom?" He says as he stares absentmindedly at her making the food.
"It's a secret I learned when I was a kid, mixed in with how all of my other senses are enhanced." She answers with a smile.
Finally, she makes both of their sandwiches and they sit down and eat their food.
"So how was school today? Learn anything interesting?" She asks.
"Oh you know, same old same old. Hunter and Kaedan messing with people around the time after school; although, I did learn how to bend Earth a lot today." He answers swiftly, proceeding to bite his sandwich.
"Maybe you can "show" me sometime." She says with a laugh.
Suddenly a hurried knock came at the door. "Jackelyn, are you in there, we need to leave fast!" The older man on the other side said hurriedly.
The two in the dining table rose with questioned looks on their faces, wondering what was happening. Both of them opened the door and walked outside and saw their friend Otis, who was 6'1, with short black hair that was greying because of his age, and a bushy mustache that rested above his upper lip, trembling because of something.
"What's happening?" Jackelyn asked him.
"The Fire Nation is attacking us, we have to get to the coast to get to Kyoshi Island, it is our only escape!" He said while jogging with them.
Smoke rose from the nearby houses as the screams very slowly rose around them. They found their way to an intersection and looked right, hearing visceral screams on that side. They saw a woman on the ground with blood surrounding her, and a man laying on top of her. With Fire Nation soldiers standing a few feet away from them.
"Ah shit, keep running, I'll protect you." Otis said before charging at the two soldiers.
"He won't last Mom, let's keep running towards the boats!" The boy said before grabbing his mother's hands and running.
While running, in front of them was a fight between soldiers and guards of the town. With a few dead people laying around, mostly from the Earth guards.
The boy and his mother then turned left and ran through an alley way seeing no other option to try and get to the boats.
When they reached the end of the alleyway, a Fire Nation soldier was standing in front of them, making sure they wouldn't run by him. The two civilians took a couple steps back as the man kept walking towards them.
"Stay back, I'm warning you man!" The boy screams moving backwards with his mom. But while moving backwards, his mom gets grabbed from behind him by another Fire Nation soldier.
"MOM!" The boy screams as he reaches for his mother quickly, grabbing her. She is pulled back immediately by the soldier.
"Heh, she looks pretty doesn't she, Ken?" The soldier with the boys mom said to the other.
"Yea, we just have to make quick work of this kid." The soldier answered back before rushing at the boy with fire.
The boy weaved the first attack and decked the soldier in the face before using his earthbending to slam him into one of the walls, then crushing him with a motion of his hand. He then turned his attention to the soldier holding his palm up to the side of her face with one hand and using the other to him hold her neck.
"Kid, just stand down and I'll only keep you prisoner, it's that simple. The soldier says while walking backwards with the boys mother.
The boy holds his hands up before dropping to his knees, "Okay, I'll stand down, just let my mom go." He said while tears were rolling down his face.
"I can't to that bub." The soldier said as he took his palm off the mother's head and pointed it at the boy.
"NO!" The mother screamed in anguish as fire began to come out of the soldiers hand.
The boy looked shocked as he felt as if the world slowed down; the fire heading towards him very slowly, but then it all stopped and a voice spoke in his head.
"Fire needs oxygen Kaam." His mother said in a memory of them camping while burning sticks together.
Time returned to normal, but not truly as Kaams body had a mind of its own, taking away the air from the fire bending and using it to wrap a sphere around the soldiers head and crushing it, the soldiers body fell backwards and lay on the ground.
Jackelyn fell to the ground touching her neck, feeling the area wide eyed while looking at the area of her son. "I had a feeling that this would happen, but I didn't know it would happen in these circumstances.
Kaam looked at his hands in horror, he just killed two people with these hands; although, they were trying to kill his mother. He snapped out of it before he looked back at his mom, "What do you mean?" He asked confusedly.
"We'll talk about this later, right now we need to focus on getting out of here.
They left the alley and headed towards the boats. They saw guards protecting the boats from a gate. But it seems that all of the soldiers attacking were dead now, so it gave the two civilians a chance to head for the boats.
"Over here!" A guard said waving his hands. "We'll let you through the gate, hurry!" He yelled while opening the gate.
Jackelyn and Kaam ran through the gate and headed to a boat, reaching it before more soldiers came. They sat waiting for more survivors to come on the boat, but Fire Nation soldier broke through and slaughtered the Earth Kingdom guards.
"HURRY, START THE BOATS!" A sailor said as they left the port.
Both the mother and son looked back at the city that they lived in, completely different people than just a couple of hours before.
"Atleast we're alive Kaam... That's all that matters." Jackelyn told her son while hugging him.
"Yes Mom, thank you. But what was it that you were going to tell me earlier about my air bending?" He asked his mother.
The boat kept moving to the Island while the two kept talking. Heading slowly but surely to their next home.
