Chapter 7 - chapter 7:-The Unspoken Distance

James called Alice every day, always curious about her college life, asking about her classes, assignments, and the new friends she was making. It was a routine that had become comforting to Alice, a reminder of their old bond. But there was one person who didn't share the same enthusiasm for these daily calls—William.

William couldn't stand the way James seemed to constantly check in on Alice, even after all this time. It wasn't that he hated James, but the closeness between them made him uneasy. Alice, sensing the growing tension, found herself in a difficult position. She valued her friendship with James but didn't want to make things harder with William.

To keep the peace, Alice chose to distance herself from James, limiting their conversations. She hated that it had come to this—feeling like she had to choose between two people who mattered to her. But the lines had blurred, and now, she stood on the edge of a fragile balance, unsure how long she could keep walking this tightrope.

As James called Alice every day, his voice always filled with curiosity about her college life—how her classes were going, the new people she had met, and the little things that made her day. For Alice, these calls were more than just casual check-ins; they were a link to someone she had deeply cared about for years. But the situation had changed. William, her current partner, didn't like James. It wasn't jealousy—at least, not entirely—but a discomfort that grew with every call Alice received.

Alice loved James. She always had. Their bond was unspoken but undeniable, built over the course of two years, filled with shared moments and memories. But she couldn't ignore William's feelings, and the tension it caused in their relationship. The problem was simple: Alice was torn.

She didn't want to hurt William, yet she couldn't bring herself to cut ties with James completely. Their connection was something special, something she hadn't found with anyone else. The thought of letting go of that was unbearable.

But at the same time, she knew she couldn't continue living in this delicate balance forever. It was either distance herself from James, or risk losing everything with William.

After much inner turmoil, Alice made a decision. She chose not to distance herself from James. Not because she didn't care about William, but because the years she had spent with James couldn't be erased in a moment of pressure. James had been her constant for so long, and the idea of losing that bond felt like losing a part of herself.

As Alice made this decision, she realized the cost of love was never easy. And now, with a heart split between two worlds, she had to face the consequences of the choices she'd made.

William had noticed Alice's odd behavior—how she would sometimes hesitate before answering his calls, or how she seemed distracted during their conversations. He couldn't understand why she was acting this way, why she wouldn't engage with him as she once had. The distance between them was growing, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something—or someone—was standing in the way.

One evening, after yet another quiet and awkward conversation, William couldn't take it any longer. His voice cracked with emotion as he asked, "Why are you acting like this, Alice? Why are you ignoring me? Why do you keep holding back? Why can't we just talk like we used to?"

Alice froze, her heart aching. She never wanted to hurt William, but the pull towards James was undeniable. The calls, the connection, the history—it all still held a place in her heart. But she knew William was feeling the weight of her actions. His hurt was so visible now, and the guilt gnawed at her.

She had tried to keep everything balanced, to maintain her relationship with William while holding on to the bond she shared with James. But it wasn't working. William was beginning to feel like he was losing her, and Alice knew she couldn't keep pretending that things were the same.

With a sigh, Alice turned to William. "I never meant to hurt you, William. I just… I'm torn. I don't know what to do. I care about you, but I've known James for so long. I don't know how to just walk away from that."

William's face softened, but the pain remained in his eyes. "I just want to know why I feel like I'm being pushed away. Why can't we be open with each other? Why can't you just talk to me like you used to?"

Alice felt her heart shatter as she realized the depth of William's hurt. She had been trying so hard to keep both sides of her life separate, but now she could see the damage it was causing. She wasn't just losing her connection with William—she was losing herself in the process.

As the days passed, Alice and William's once-close relationship began to drift apart, slowly but surely. Whenever William came home to study, Alice would retreat, keeping her distance. She would quietly leave the room, her thoughts clouded with the weight of her decisions. She couldn't bring herself to have the open conversations William needed, and it left him feeling more and more alone.

William, frustrated by her coldness, would often find himself shutting down. He stopped calling out to Alice, stopped trying to reach out to her, convinced that she was pushing him away. His silence spoke louder than words, and Alice couldn't help but notice the hurt in his eyes when he walked past her without a word. The tension between them grew, and Alice was left feeling like a stranger in her own relationship.

It wasn't long before William, tired of the emotional distance, made a decision of his own. He chose to stop trying to talk to Alice altogether. He believed that if she was so unwilling to open up to him, perhaps it was best to give her the space she seemed to want. But for Alice, this only made things harder. She realized she had lost the intimacy they once shared, and it hurt in a way she didn't expect.

On the other hand, James, who had been a constant presence in Alice's life, had noticed the change in her. When Alice finally reached out to him one day, he could sense the tension that still lingered in her voice, even though she had tried to hide it. "Are you okay, Alice?" he asked, his voice soft but laced with concern.

Alice hesitated before answering, unsure whether to reveal everything. Her love for James had never gone away, but she couldn't deny the conflict in her heart. As much as she wanted to confide in him, something held her back.

James, sensing her hesitation, smiled, but there was a trace of doubt in his eyes. "You know, you can always tell me the truth, Alice. Are you really fine with everything? With William, with us?"

Alice, caught in the web of her own confusion, smiled faintly. "I'm fine, James. Really. I just... need some time to figure things out."

James couldn't shake the feeling that Alice wasn't being entirely honest with him. Deep down, he wondered if she was telling him the truth, or if she was trying to convince herself of something she wasn't sure about. But for now, he let it go. He had waited for this moment for so long, and though part of him felt relief, another part remained uncertain.

As he hung up, a lingering question gnawed at him

A few days after the emotional turbulence between Alice, James, and William, Alice's exams began. With the pressure of deadlines and the weight of her future resting on her shoulders, she decided to leave everything behind—her doubts, her fears, and the tangled emotions she carried.

Books became her refuge, her focus unwavering as she dove deep into her studies. Day and night, her world revolved around her notes, assignments, and preparation. The outside world, with all its complexities, started to fade into the background.

James, though aching for her attention, respected the distance Alice had created. Their conversations, once frequent and filled with emotion, dwindled to only a few words exchanged occasionally. Alice didn't seem bothered by this change. Her studies had become her priority, and in her heart, she held onto the belief that James wouldn't repeat his mistakes.

For James, this quiet indifference from Alice was both a relief and a challenge. He wanted to prove his worth, to show that his love for her was genuine, but he also understood that she needed this time for herself. So, he stepped back further, letting her concentrate on her goals while quietly cheering her on from afar.

William, too, remained distant, fully retreating into his own world. He had always been a silent observer, and now, watching Alice dedicate herself entirely to her studies, he chose not to interfere.

Alice, meanwhile, found solace in her solitude. The distance from James and William gave her the clarity she hadn't felt in a long time. She poured all her energy into her work, determined to succeed and leave behind the distractions that had once consumed her life.

Though the distance between them grew, it wasn't filled with resentment. Instead, it was a space where each of them began to find themselves. Yet, beneath the calm exterior, unspoken emotions lingered—feelings that time and silence couldn't erase.

As the days passed and the exams loomed closer, one question remained unanswered: would this distance truly bring them peace, or was it merely the calm before the storm?

After her exams ended, Alice felt a wave of relief wash over her. The burden of late-night studies and endless revisions was gone, and for the first time in weeks, she could breathe freely. With the pressure lifted, her thoughts returned to James.

Alice decided to reconnect. She started calling him more frequently, wanting to talk about her exams, her life, and everything they had missed during her period of isolation. However, something felt different this time.

James, who was once eager to pick up her calls or respond to her messages, now seemed distant. He often delayed answering, sometimes claiming he was busy or caught up in something important. Conversations that used to flow naturally now felt strained, with long pauses and vague responses from his side.

Alice couldn't help but notice the change. She remembered how James had once made time for her, no matter how hectic his schedule was. Now, even when she called, he seemed preoccupied, his words hurried and his attention divided.

At first, she brushed it off. Maybe he's genuinely busy, she told herself. But as days turned into weeks, the pattern remained the same. Every attempt to get closer only highlighted the growing distance between them.

For Alice, the uncertainty was unsettling. She began to wonder: Was James truly busy, or was he pulling away for reasons he wouldn't share? And if he was, was it because of her—or something deeper within himself?

As their once-close bond began to fray, Alice knew one thing for sure: the answers she sought couldn't come from silence. Sooner or later, they would have to confront the growing tension between them..
