My life was never the same after Haylie disappeared into that light with her mother. For weeks afterward, I could barely sleep or eat. My father took me to see a doctor, but the treatment and medications they prescribed felt useless. Nothing could bring Haylie back. She was gone—my fated mate, the woman who owned my heart.
After the incident, my father arranged a proper funeral for Aunt Camelia and Haylie. Their graves were placed side by side, next to her father's Kayson, and her mother Olivia.
But on the day of the funeral, I couldn't handle the pain. Halfway through the service, I left and went home. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to her, and I never would be.
I changed after losing her. I stepped down as captain of the high school football team because I was barely attending school. The coach eventually chose someone else to take my place.
