Chapter 4

The forest at night was suffocating, a tangled web of gnarled roots and ghostly whispers. Elyra's chest heaved as she crouched behind the ancient oak, her palms pressed into the damp earth. Her muscles burned from hours of running, and the weight of exhaustion threatened to drag her down.

But she couldn't stop. Not now. Not with him so close.

Kael.

The General of the Crimson Guard was a name whispered with fear, a shadow that followed every rebellion and left none standing. She'd thought him a brute—a soldier who thrived on bloodshed and blind obedience. But she'd been wrong.

Kael wasn't just ruthless. He was clever.

The faint crunch of leaves behind her sent a jolt through her system. She swallowed hard, biting back the panic that threatened to consume her. He was near. Too near.

"You're running out of forest, little spy," his voice called, smooth and cold. It sent a chill racing down her spine.

Elyra pressed herself tighter against the tree, her mind racing. Her dagger rested in its sheath, but what good was a blade against him? The stories said Kael had survived countless ambushes, taking down dozens of soldiers without a scratch.

And now he was hunting her.

She forced her breath to steady. Think. Think. Her hand brushed against a loose rock on the ground. It wasn't much, but it was all she had. Gripping it tightly, she peeked around the tree.

The moonlight painted the forest floor in pale silver, broken by the jagged shadows of branches. Kael was nowhere to be seen.

But he was there. Somewhere. Watching. Waiting.

Elyra bolted.

Her feet pounded against the earth, weaving through the trees with every ounce of speed she could muster. The undergrowth tore at her legs, the brambles scratching her skin, but she didn't care. Freedom was all that mattered.

A shadow moved to her right. Too fast. Too precise.

Panic surged, and before she could react, a hand seized her wrist, yanking her back with brutal force. The rock fell from her grip as she stumbled, her body colliding with something solid—him.

Kael pinned her against a tree, his hand locking her wrists above her head. His grip was unyielding, a predator holding its prey.

"You've been making this difficult," he murmured, his voice low and dangerous.

Elyra struggled, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Let me go!"

Kael smirked, his face inches from hers. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his jaw, the faint scar cutting across his cheek. "After all this? Not a chance."

His other hand reached down, pulling her dagger from its sheath. He inspected it, turning the blade in the light. "A nice weapon. Though I doubt you've had the chance to use it properly."

Her fury ignited. "Try me."

Kael's gaze flicked to hers, his expression unreadable. "Bold words for someone so thoroughly caught."

Elyra hated the way her breath caught in her throat, the way her body betrayed her resolve. His proximity was suffocating, his presence overwhelming.

But beneath the fear was something else. Something darker.

"You think I'm afraid of you?" she spat, her voice trembling with defiance.

Kael's smirk softened, but his eyes darkened. "No," he said quietly. "I think you're afraid of what happens if I'm right about you."

Her heart skipped a beat. "What does that mean?"

He leaned closer, his breath warm against her skin. "You don't belong with them. The resistance. The rebellion. You don't fight like someone who believes in the cause."

Elyra flinched, her mind racing. "You don't know anything about me."

"Don't I?" Kael's tone was softer now, almost dangerous in its intimacy. "You hesitate. You run. You don't kill when you should. That's not loyalty to the cause. That's survival."

His words cut deeper than any blade, striking at truths she refused to acknowledge.

"Stop," she hissed, her voice breaking.

Kael's eyes searched hers, and for a moment, his grip loosened. The weight of his presence shifted, and Elyra saw something she hadn't expected—hesitation.

But it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

"Move," he ordered, stepping back and gesturing toward the path.

Elyra glared at him, her body screaming to run, but she knew it was pointless. Her escape had failed. For now.

As she began to walk, his footsteps followed close behind, each one a reminder of his control.

But Elyra wasn't broken. Not yet.

Because beneath her fear and fury, a plan was forming.

And Kael, for all his strength, had no idea just how dangerous she could be.
