Chapter 2 - wings of defiance

The silence of the dungeon was deafening as Lucian followed Kieran through the darkened corridors. Every creak of the stone underfoot and faint clink of armor from distant guards felt like a thunderclap in the stillness. Despite the tension, Kieran moved with an unsettling calm, his steps deliberate and soundless.

Lucian's mind churned with questions. Why had this stranger risked so much to free him? And what did he mean by Lucian being a "key" to rebellion? Yet, there was no time for answers. Not when every step forward was a gamble with death.

"Keep your head down," Kieran whispered, his voice low but firm. "The outer guards patrol in pairs. If we're spotted, we won't stand a chance against reinforcements."

Lucian nodded, his military instincts kicking in. He had once commanded legions, maneuvered armies in the chaos of battle. Now, he was sneaking through the shadows like a fugitive. The bitter irony wasn't lost on him.

As they reached the final set of rune-etched doors leading to the hangar grounds, Kieran halted. He placed the disruptor against the door, its soft hum filling the quiet space.

"This will disable the wards for sixty seconds," Kieran explained. "When it does, we run. No hesitations."

Lucian clenched his fists. "I'm not the one hesitating."

Kieran glanced at him, a hint of amusement in his shadowed features. "Good. Because what we're about to do is going to change everything."

---

The hangar grounds were vast, a sprawling expanse of steel and stone illuminated by the harsh glow of magelights. At the center stood the Arcane Skybreaker, its obsidian hull gleaming under the pale moonlight. Lucian's breath hitched as he took in the sight.

The airship was unlike anything he'd seen before—sleek, massive, and bristling with intricate runes along its frame. The faint hum of the Arcane Engine resonated even from this distance, a reminder of the power it held.

"I can't believe this thing still exists," Lucian murmured.

"It's been under imperial lock and key for decades," Kieran replied. "Even most officers don't know about it. But we're not leaving without it."

Before Lucian could respond, a shout echoed across the grounds. One of the guards had spotted them.

"Move!" Kieran barked, hurling a small, rune-inscribed orb toward the nearest patrol.

The orb exploded in a flash of light, sending the guards reeling. Alarms blared, their shrill cries cutting through the night. Lucian sprinted after Kieran, his heart pounding as chaos erupted around them.

They reached the airship's boarding ramp just as the first wave of reinforcements arrived. Arrows and bolts of magical energy streaked through the air, narrowly missing their marks.

"Kieran!" Lucian shouted, ducking behind the ramp for cover.

"I've got it!" Kieran yelled back, working frantically to disable the ship's wards. Sparks flew as he bypassed the magical seals, his hands moving with practiced precision.

Lucian peered around the corner, his gaze locking onto the advancing soldiers. Their weapons gleamed, their movements disciplined. His military mind assessed the situation instantly: they were outnumbered and outgunned.

"Anytime now!" Lucian growled.

"Done!" Kieran exclaimed as the final seal shattered.

The ramp lowered with a metallic hiss, and they bolted inside. The interior of the Skybreaker was as imposing as its exterior, a labyrinth of corridors and glowing consoles.

"This way!" Kieran shouted, leading Lucian to the control deck.

As they entered, Lucian's eyes were drawn to the central console—a circular platform surrounded by floating runes. At its heart was a crystalline sphere pulsating with a faint blue light.

"The Arcane Engine," Kieran said, his voice reverent. "This is what powers the Skybreaker. Without it, the ship is just a shell."

Lucian stepped closer, the engine's hum resonating in his chest. He felt a strange pull, as if the artifact were alive, aware of his presence.

"Can you fly it?" he asked, tearing his gaze away.

Kieran grinned. "I didn't come this far without knowing how to handle her. Strap in—it's going to get rough."

---

The Skybreaker roared to life, its engines emitting a deep, resonant thrum that shook the hangar. Lucian manned the weapons console, his hands moving instinctively over the controls.

"Here they come," he said as imperial soldiers swarmed the hangar, their weapons trained on the airship.

Kieran pushed the controls forward, and the Skybreaker lifted off the ground with a deafening roar. The sudden burst of motion sent the guards scattering, but Lucian knew they wouldn't give up easily.

"Watch the north tower," he warned, firing a volley of magical projectiles toward an incoming ballista. The explosion lit up the night, but the imperial forces were relentless.

Outside, the sky filled with the dark silhouettes of imperial airships. They were smaller and slower than the Skybreaker, but their numbers made up for it.

"They're locking on!" Kieran shouted as the enemy ships began their pursuit.

Lucian's fingers flew over the weapons console, targeting the lead ships. His first shot struck true, a burst of magical energy ripping through an enemy airship's hull.

"Nice shot," Kieran said, banking the Skybreaker hard to the left.

Lucian gritted his teeth as the ship lurched, narrowly avoiding a barrage of enemy fire. The sky was alive with explosions, the deafening booms echoing in his ears.

"We can't outrun them forever," Lucian said. "They'll overwhelm us with sheer numbers."

"Then we don't outrun them," Kieran replied, his voice steady. "We outthink them."

Lucian's mind raced. "There's a canyon to the east—narrow, but deep. If we can lure them in, their numbers will work against them."

Kieran nodded, a glint of approval in his eyes. "Hold on."

The Skybreaker veered east, its engines roaring as it picked up speed. The canyon came into view, its jagged cliffs looming like the jaws of some great beast.

Lucian's grip tightened on the console as they entered the narrow pass. The enemy ships followed, their larger formations struggling to adapt to the confined space.

"Now!" Lucian shouted, firing a barrage of projectiles at the cliffs above.

The explosion sent rocks tumbling into the canyon, cutting off several enemy ships. The rest faltered, their formation breaking apart.

"Brilliant," Kieran said, his grin widening as the Skybreaker shot out of the canyon and into open sky.

Lucian allowed himself a small smile, but it quickly faded. The empire wouldn't stop hunting them, and this victory was just the beginning.

As the Skybreaker soared into the night, Lucian felt a strange mix of fear and determination. He had stolen one of the empire's greatest weapons, defied its might, and lived to tell the tale. But the real fight was still ahead.

And for the first time, he felt ready to face it.
