Chapter 2 - chapter 2

Sarah stood outside her father's house, feeling a mix of emotions as she gazed up at the familiar facade. She had grown up in this house, spent countless hours playing in the backyard and laughing with her family in the living room. But now, as she stood here with her suitcase by her side, she felt a sense of uncertainty and trepidation.

She had decided to come back to Texas after losing her job at the bank. She had thought that returning to her childhood home would be a comforting and familiar place to regroup and figure out her next steps. But as she stood here now, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

She walked up to the front door and tried the handle, but it was locked. She frowned, wondering why her father wouldn't have left the door unlocked for her. She dug through her purse for her key and unlocked the door, pushing it open and calling out, "Dad? Hello?"

But there was no response. The house was silent and still, and Sarah felt a shiver run down her spine. She walked inside, looking around at the familiar rooms, but something felt different. The furniture was all still there, but the house felt empty and hollow.

Sarah walked through the house, calling out for her father, but there was no answer. She checked the kitchen, the living room, and even the backyard, but there was no sign of him. She began to feel a sense of unease and worry. Where was her father? Why wasn't he here?

She walked back inside and tried calling his cell phone, but it went straight to voicemail. She left a message, trying to keep her voice calm and steady. "Dad, it's Sarah. I'm here at the house, but you're not. Where are you? Please call me back as soon as you can."

As she waited for a response, Sarah began to feel a sense of unease and uncertainty. She had come back to Texas thinking that she would be able to find comfort and support with her father. But now, as she stood alone in the empty house, she felt lost and scared.

She walked over to the kitchen table and sat down, trying to think of what to do next. She could try calling her father's friends or acquaintances to see if they had heard from him. Or she could try contacting the local authorities to see if they had any information about his whereabouts.

As she sat there, trying to decide what to do, Sarah felt a sense of fear and uncertainty creeping in. Where was her father? And why wasn't he here?

Sarah sat in stunned silence, her mind reeling with the news that Dave, her father's assistant, had just delivered. She had gone to see Dave, hoping that he might have some information about her father's whereabouts, but instead, she had been met with the devastating revelation that her father had passed away eight months ago.

"I'm so sorry, Sarah," Dave said, his voice filled with compassion. "I know this must be a shock to you. Your father was a private person, and he didn't want anyone to know about his illness. He asked me to keep it quiet, and I respected his wishes."

Sarah felt like she had been punched in the gut. She couldn't believe that her father was gone, and that she had been left in the dark about his illness and death. She thought back to their last conversation, trying to remember if he had given her any indication that something was wrong. But he had seemed fine, a little distant maybe, but fine.

"Why didn't he tell me?" Sarah asked, her voice shaking with emotion. "Why did he keep it a secret?"

Dave sighed. "Your father was a proud man, Sarah. He didn't want anyone to worry about him, especially you. He wanted to protect you from the pain and stress of his illness."

Sarah felt a wave of anger wash over her. How could her father do this to her? How could he keep something so important from her? She thought about all the times she had tried to reach out to him, all the times she had left messages and emails, and he had never responded. It all made sense now.

"What happened to his estate?" Sarah asked, trying to compose herself.

"Everything has been taken care of," Dave replied. "Your father's lawyer handled all the arrangements. The house is yours now, and there's a trust fund set up in your name."

Sarah felt a sense of relief wash over her. At least she wouldn't have to worry about her financial future. But the pain of losing her father, and the anger and hurt she felt at being kept in the dark, would take a long time to heal.

As she left Dave's office, Sarah felt like she was walking through a fog. Everything seemed distant and unreal. She couldn't believe that her father was really gone, and that she would never see him again.

She walked back to her car, feeling like she was in a daze. She didn't know what to do next, or where to go. She felt lost and alone, and she didn't know how to find her way back.

As she sat in her car, trying to process everything that had happened, Sarah felt a sense of grief wash over her. She had lost her father, and she had lost the chance to say goodbye. She felt like she was mourning not just his death, but the loss of their relationship, and the chance to reconnect with him before it was too late.

Sarah walked into her hotel room, feeling like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She had just received the devastating news about her father's passing, and she was still trying to process it all.

As she closed the door behind her, Sarah felt a wave of emotions wash over her. She wept uncontrollably, mourning the loss of her father and the pain of being kept in the dark about his illness. She felt angry and hurt, wondering why her father had kept her at arm's length and why he had never reached out to her during his final months.

As the tears flowed, Sarah felt like she was releasing all the pent-up emotions she had been carrying around for so long. She had always felt like she was living in limbo, waiting for her father to reach out to her or to make amends. But now, with his passing, Sarah realized that she was finally free to move on with her life.

But as the tears began to subside, Sarah was left with a sense of uncertainty and doubt. What was she supposed to do now? Should she return to her old life, or should she stay in Texas and try to start anew?

Sarah thought about all the what-ifs. What if she had known about her father's illness? Would she have been able to make amends and repair their relationship? What if she had stayed in Texas and taken care of her father during his final months? Would things have turned out differently?

As the questions swirled in her mind, Sarah felt like she was stuck in a rut. She didn't know what to do or where to go. She felt lost and alone, and she didn't know how to find her way back.

But as she sat on the bed, staring blankly at the wall, Sarah felt a small spark of determination ignite within her. She realized that she had a choice to make. She could let the pain and uncertainty of her past define her, or she could use it as a catalyst to create a new future for herself.

Sarah took a deep breath and stood up, feeling a sense of resolve wash over her. She knew that she still had a long way to go, but she was ready to take the first step. She was ready to start anew, to create a life that was truly her own. And as she looked out the window, watching the sun set over the Texas horizon, Sarah felt a sense of hope and possibility that she hadn't felt in years.
