The return journey to the encampment was fraught with an uneasy silence. The shard's newfound knowledge weighed heavily on Kael's mind. The Vault of Aegis wasn't just a sanctuary—it was a weapon forged to repel darkness, but its power came at a cost. The visions had been cryptic, showing fragmented images of sacrifices made in ages past.
The group pushed through the jagged hills and rolling plains, urgency in their every step. The Warlord would not rest, and Kael knew time was slipping through their fingers like grains of sand.
As they neared the encampment, the horizon darkened unnaturally. Clouds churned, swirling in an ominous dance that blotted out the sun. A faint tremor rippled through the ground beneath their feet.
"What in the blazes is that?" Dain growled, gripping his axe tightly.
Freya knelt, pressing her palm to the ground. "It's coming from the direction of the camp."
Kael's heart sank. "We're too late."
When they reached the outskirts of the encampment, chaos greeted them. The once-bustling camp was now a battlefield. Flames licked at the edges of tents, warriors clashed with shadowy figures, and the air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and blood.
"They attacked while we were away," Lira said, her voice a mixture of anger and despair.
Kael spotted Euric rallying a group of defenders near the central barricade. Without hesitation, the group charged into the fray, cutting through waves of Black Suns and shadowbeasts.
As they fought their way to Euric, Kael noticed something unsettling—some of the allied warriors were fighting one another.
"They've sown discord!" Lira shouted, parrying a blow from a shadow-clad soldier.
Kael felt the shard pulse in his hand, urging him to act. He climbed atop a charred wagon and raised the shard high. Its light burst forth, casting a radiant glow across the battlefield.
"Enough!" Kael's voice rang out, amplified by the shard's energy. "This is what they want—to divide us, to break our unity! Fight the real enemy!"
The light seemed to pierce through the haze of confusion. Warriors who had been battling one another paused, realization dawning in their eyes. They turned their blades toward the Black Suns, rallying together once more.
Euric reached them, bloodied but unbowed. "Kael! They struck hard and fast. Their leader isn't here, but they've left behind something worse."
"What do you mean?" Kael asked.
Before Euric could answer, a guttural roar echoed across the battlefield. A massive shadowbeast, larger than any they had faced before, emerged from the darkness. Its form was amorphous, shifting like liquid smoke, with glowing red eyes that burned with malevolence.
"It's an avatar," Sylas said, his voice trembling. "A fragment of the Warlord's power."
The beast charged, its claws raking through the barricades as if they were paper. Warriors scattered, their weapons seeming ineffective against its ever-shifting form.
Kael leaped into action, the shard blazing with light. He struck at the beast, but his blade passed through it harmlessly.
"It's incorporeal!" Freya shouted, loosing an arrow that dissolved into the creature's shadowy mass.
"We need a way to solidify it!" Lira yelled, dodging a sweeping claw.
Kael closed his eyes, focusing on the shard. He felt its energy resonate, guiding him to the answer. "The light—it can bind it!"
"Then do it!" Dain bellowed, charging the beast to distract it.
Kael planted the shard into the ground, channeling its energy outward. A circle of light expanded from the shard, surrounding the beast and trapping it within. The creature roared in defiance, its form solidifying under the shard's power.
"It's vulnerable now!" Kael shouted.
The group attacked with renewed vigor. Dain's axe bit deep into its flank, Freya's arrows struck its glowing eyes, and Lira's blades danced with deadly precision. Kael delivered the final blow, driving his sword into the creature's core as the shard flared with blinding brilliance.
The beast let out a final, ear-piercing screech before disintegrating into motes of light.
As the battlefield quieted, Kael surveyed the damage. The encampment was in ruins, and the allied forces were battered, but they were alive.
Euric approached, his expression grim. "This was a message. The Warlord is toying with us, testing our resolve."
"And he's succeeded in showing us our vulnerabilities," Lira said. "We need to act quickly."
Kael nodded. "The Vault of Aegis is our only hope. The shard has shown me where we need to go—a place called the Obsidian Cliffs. That's where we'll find the key to unlocking its power."
Euric frowned. "The Obsidian Cliffs are deep within enemy territory."
"Then we'll have to carve our way through," Kael said, determination hardening his voice. "The longer we wait, the stronger he becomes."
That night, as the camp worked to rebuild, Kael stood alone at the edge of the camp, staring at the shard in his hand. Its light had dimmed, but its presence was as strong as ever.
Lira approached, her footsteps light on the scorched earth. "You did well today."
Kael sighed. "We barely survived. And every time we face him, he gets closer to breaking us."
Lira placed a hand on his arm. "We're still standing. And as long as we are, there's hope."
Kael looked at her, finding strength in her unwavering gaze. "Then we move at first light. The Vault is waiting, and so is the Warlord."
Together, they stared into the horizon, where the first faint glimmers of dawn began to break through the darkness.
