Chapter 22 - What was that?

Ken, had been in a bad mood after speaking with Helena. He decided to call his mom, asking to go over and see her at home.

After he had ended the call with her, he scrolled through his Watsapp, and found Chelsy's number. He started going through their messages and saw so many pictures Chelsy had sent to him. He never paid attention to any of them.

Ken had never really paid attention to Chelsy's physical features.

As he looked at a selfie she had once sent to him with the caption, 'Your Aurora', Ken realized that Chelsy was truly so beautiful. He had never taken note of her facial features. He had always thought Chelsy's eyes were amber.

But when he looked closely, he realized that they were actually hazel. She was never into makeup, but her skin was so flawless. She had sharp and well-defined facial features, especially her well structured nose and heart shaped lips.

''Gosh, Chelsy, I didn't realize you were this beautiful.'' Ken muttered to himself, while combing his fingers through his hair. He stood up from his chair, picked up his phone and car key and stepped out of his office.

Larry was waiting in the corridor. ''Tell Derrick to go home. I will be driving myself to my parents.'' Larry nodded and said, ''Yes sir.''

Ken drove straight to Robert's cottage.

When Ken got to his parent's home, he saw his mom sitting by the poolside reading a book. Since the day Ken had broken up with Chelsy at his residence, Emilia Roberts had not been on good terms with him.

She had never really liked Helena for her son. She believed that Helena was a spoiled brad and never truly loved her son, thus, she would never make him happy.

She had always known Chelsy loved Ken genuinely and would make him extremely happy. It was rather unfortunate that her son had been toiling with the emotions of someone who deeply cared for him.

''Hey mama.'' Ken walked over and gave a peck on Emilia's cheek. Emilia adjusted her glasses and asked in a soft voice. ''You called earlier, asking for my help with something. What is it all about? Does it have to do with your up coming wedding?''

Ken sat down opposite her and found it difficult to place his question. Ken was very good when it came to business, and he was very stern when it came to his employees and subordinates.

On the other hand, he was very timid when it came to his mom. He cleared his throat and said. ''Mama, I really need your advice on something that has been troubling me.''

When Emilia heard this, her mommy instincts kicked in. She had a worried look in her eyes. She moved closer to him and placed her hand on his thigh. ''Ken, are you okay? Tell me whatever it is that is bothering you.''

Ken took a deep breath and said, ''Mama, it is Chelsy. I get to think about her all the time. I see her virtually everywhere in my house. I know I don't love her. But since I last saw her at the mall, I haven't been able to get her out of my mind. I miss everything about her. I miss the way she calls me. I miss her text messages, I miss the way she looks at me. Do you think I am possessed with some kind of spirit? Or did she use some kind of voodoo on me?''

Emilia Roberts, who had been listening keenly, couldn't hold it any longer and burst into a hysterical laughter. She laughed so hard that traces of tears could be seen in her eyes.

Ken was confused on why his mom was laughing so hard. ''Kenneth, if you weren't my son, I would probably have taken you to a doctor to check if you are mentally alright. You might be a great business executive, but when it comes to matters of the heart, you are still a boy. It is certain you have never been in love to realize it.''

She gave another little laughter and said. ''My dear son, it is not voodoo nor any form of enchantment.

From every indication, you are deeply in love with Chelsy. These are all signs of you being in love.''

She took her son's hand into hers. ''Listen to me.

Your wedding is coming up next week. Your fiancé is pregnant as well. I will not tell you what to do. Only you can determine what is right for you. Let me ask you this. Do you love Helena?''

Ken gave a big sigh and replied. ''I never had any intention of marrying Helena. It only happened once, when I got drunk during the signing ceremony of the merger between Starlink Conglomerate and Roberts Corporation. I woke up the next morning and found myself lying in bed with Helena. I didn't even know how I got there. A month later, she called me and said she was pregnant and terminating it wasn't in the picture. I had no choice than to propose marriage. I didn't want our partnership affected by this news. I do like her, but for love, I don't think I do.'' His face was full of loneliness. It felt as though a part of him was missing.

This was actually the first time Ken had been so vulnerable before anyone. He poured out his most hidden thoughts to his mom.

Emilia held his shoulder and said. ''You aren't married yet to Helena. If you think you love Chelsy, find her and make things right. Don't spend your life regretting not fixing something which you had the opportunity of fixing. A broken engagement is better than a broken marriage. Forever is a very long time to spend with someone you don't love or have feelings for. You could still be a great father to your child, even if you don't end up with his or her mother.''

Emilia took a big sigh, and said. ''I don't know if Chelsy will forgive you after everything you have done. But there is no harm in trying.''

Ken leaned forward and hugged his mom. ''Thank you mama. It feels as though a big burden has been lifted off my chest.''

Emilia rubbed Ken's back and said with a smile. ''Go and fight for your love.''

Ken stood up and was walking back to his car. Myra stood at the door, and he passed by Myra acting as though she was transparent. He didn't even spare her a glance.

Myra was shocked when Ken drove off without saying hello. ''What the hell? Did Ken just ignore me?'' She spoke with her face depicting both hurt and surprise.

Ever since Myra slandered Chelsy's name, Ken treated her like she was some type of contagious plague.

While in the car, Ken placed a call to Larry. He spoke with a firm voice. ''Larry, I want you to send me Chelsy's home address immediately.''

Larry, at the other end of the line, was stunned. ''Mister Roberts, but Chelsy no longer lives with her brother. His wife threw her out of the house the day the scandal about you both was exposed online.''

Ken cursed under his breath. "Dammit. Where the hell is she now?''

Larry cleared his throat and said. ''Mister Roberts, she moved in with her best friend Rachel Hannigan. But right now, Rachel Hannigan has moved back into her family home. So I don't know if Chelsy still lives in her apartment, or has moved out.''

Ken's brows furrowed, and he said. ''Set an appointment with Hannigan Global Empire right now. I am heading to their office.'' He spoke and dropped the call.

Larry felt as though he was going to pass out. ''My goodness. Why is Mister Roberts so confused? He left Miss Powers for Miss Richards. Now that his wedding is in a week's time, he is looking for Miss Powers.'' Larry muttered to himself.

He wiped the sweat on his forehead and called Hannigan headquarters to set an immediate appointment with their CEO.

Ken arrived at the Hannigan Global Empire building, and was immediately directed to the CEO's office.

When Martin Hannigan saw him, he was so surprised. Hannigan Global had always wanted to partner with Robert's Corp, but they have never had the opportunity.

''Greetings Mister Roberts. It is an honor having you in our company.'' Martin Hannigan extended his hand to Ken and asked him to sit down.

''What brings you urgently to my office?''

Ken, with his face exuding no emotion, said in a low but commanding tone. ''I have gone through the proposal you tabled last year to our company. Our southern base will be needing your services.''

When Martin Hannigan heard this, there was a huge smile on his face. ''I think that will be great. Let me call my general manager over so that you can both talk about the contract."

He picked up his phone and dialed the his daughter. When the call connected, he said. ''Rachel, can you please come over to my office?''

It took Rachel about two minutes to get to her father's office. When she walked in and saw Ken, she was stunned. She quickly snapped out of it and acted professionally.

''Yes sir. You sent for me.''

Martin Hannigan nodded and asked her to schedule a date with mister Ken Roberts in order to discuss the contract. She nodded and turned to Ken. ''Mister Roberts, can we do that tomorrow? I will need to send a copy of the contract to you so that you can review prior to our meeting.''

Ken just nodded and responded, ''that would be fine. I guess I should take my leave now.''

He stood up, and shook Martin Hannigan's hand. He turned to Rachel. ''Miss Hannigan, can I have a word with you in private please?''

Rachel swallowed the anger that had been boiling in her heart and replied in an indifferent tone. ''Sure. You can come to my office.''

They both went to her office. When they got there, Ken started.

''Rachel, I know you are probably looking at me like the worst devil right now. But please, where is Chelsy? I really need to see her.''

Rachel, who had been controlling her anger all through, couldn't pretend anymore. She gave an outburst and snapped at Ken. "Chelsy? Which Chelsy are you referring to? Ken, are you under the influence of some expired weed? The same Chelsy you didn't like and only used as a pawn in your game? Huh? Listen to me Kenneth Roberts. You are the most despicable man I have ever come across. Because of you, my best friend left Wolverton. Because of you, she now hates anything related to love. I really hope you live a very miserable life.''

When Ken heard that Chelsy had left Wolverton, he felt as if he had been hit by a trailer. He held his chest and his heart felt as if it had been pricked by a million needles.

''Please Rachel. I know I have hurt Chelsy terribly. I really want to make things right. I have realized that I love her so much and wouldn't want to lose her. Please, where is she and where did she go to?''

Rachel was a little stunned by Ken's sudden confession. She cleared her throat and said. ''Ken, it is too late for that. She has left. She is somewhere far away from you. Somewhere you can never hurt her again. Please, if you don't have anything else to say, you can leave. I have a meeting to attend.''

She spoke, turned on her heels, and left.

Ken stood there, looking lost. ''How can she leave? No it can't be.'' He muttered to himself. He took out his phone and dialed his Secretary. ''Larry, I don't care how you do it. But make sure you find Chelsy.'' He ended the call and stumped out of Rachel's office.

Meanwhile, in the mountain, it was Chelsy's last day. She decided to go to her father's favorite beauty spot, which was a waterfall, about a mile from where she had set up her tent.

Her father used to call it, "the place where dreams come true." She remembered him telling her. ''Little Chels, whenever you go to 'the place where dreams come true', make a wish with all your heart, and your wish will be granted.''

The beauty spot was surrounded by wild flowers. The most common, were the English bluebells. The wild sunflowers, stood bright and tall. They commanded strength, fragility and vibrancy. The waterfall was atlantis blue and magical. It was joyfully swishing over rocks and thundering down into a serenity pool like a gigantic water spout. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold.

After Chelsy had a good swim, she walked over and sat on one of the rocks by the waterfall. She started penning down her thoughts and what she would do once she got to London.

''I wish I would forget about Kenneth Roberts and all the horrible experiences I have had in Wolverton. I wish to find a new and better purpose in life. I really wish my life in London will be a blissful one, with lots of opportunities and open doors.

" Chelsy muttered to herself.

She got up, packed her stuff and started heading back to her tent. Suddenly, Chelsy stopped abruptly with eyes wide open. The bag she was holding dropped on the ground. She looked as if she had come in contact with something strange. What was that?

What was it that Chelsy had seen that made her look so petrified? Was it a ghost, or was it a wild animal?
