I smiled in joy and rubbed my stomach happily as I walked into my marital bedroom. It had been three months and my pregnancy was yet to tumble into a miscarriage, like the previous ones. I was glad, even as fear had dung it way into my heart, the fear of yet losing another fetus. It felt like an impending doom.
"We are done with the preparation, madam!"One of the maids announced.
"Ok," I moved closer to the door at the sound of a car. "Did you hear the sound of my husband's car?"
"Yes, ma'am"
I rushed out of the room and into the sitting room as fast as my legs could let me.
I didn't want Lucas to walk past the living room before I declared the news he had always wanted to hear.
I swallowed, willing myself to breathe as the giant door creaked open. "Happy third anniversary" I announced with a wide smile the moment he walked in.
Lucas kept his usual blank expression, and sauntered towards me in quick steps "I would prefer you greet me with happy divorce day instead." he stared, disgust painted across his expression.
I moved closer to him, dread pooling at the pit of my stomach, at this crazy joke he was trying to pull.
"What do you mean, Lucas?" I asked, my smile trembling to fall.
He stared at me, dead serious.
No..
No, he wasn't doing this today, not when I had planned everything and the news I was about to deliver.
"You shouldn't be threatening me with a divorce on our third anniversary," I complained and caressed his arm with that wobbly smile on my face.
"This isn't about threatening you, Natalie. I can't do this with your disgusting ass anymore. Here are the divorce papers," he shoved the file at my chest as I jerked backward, bewildered.
I watched him as he sat on the couch and crossed his legs with an amused smirk lingering on his lips. "I had always looked forward to this day. Isn't it better to make tonight memorable?" he taunted.
"Even if you are willing to divorce me, your family wouldn't allow it. I will call your mother and tell her that you are at it again," I trembled towards my phone and clicked on my mother-in-law's phone number. It went through before the second beep.
"I was just about to call you." She said, and I smiled in return. " Well,I hope you are already out of my son's house, you gold-digger? I should have listened to him when he claimed that you had lied about him being the father of your first, but now a dead kid. What was I thinking when it was confirmed that you met in a club? I will be visiting that house tomorrow, and I believe you don't want me to chase you out while you are naked. You shameless human being!" She continued to rain insults on me.
Tears oozed out of my eyes as I murmured in short breaths "I never lied Mother," I shook my head, and held the couch to stop myself from falling.
I couldn't believe this was happening.
"Who is your mother?" She seethed "Go and find your mother who had left you to wander on the street. Your behavior has proven the life you deserve," and she ended the call.
"What is happening, Lucas?" I rushed to him,"What have I done to deserve this?"
"There was no reason why my mother was against the way I treated you if not because she desperately wanted a grandchild. After your multiple miscarriages within these three years, we are left with no option but to let you go, and you are leaving tonight," he muttered in a tone of finality.
"What if I was pregnant? Will you chase me out like this?" I knelt on the floor and crawled to his front.
"What is the essence when it will result in the same way? Besides, someone more fertile is pregnant for me," he revealed.
"Lucas, you..you cheated on me?!" I wailed.
"I will be getting married to her in the next few days. You are invited to Lucas and Miranda's wedding," he laughed evilly at the mention of the woman's name.
"Do you think you will escape from what you've done? You never treated me as your wife for the last few years, and still rewarded all my effort by doing this? You will regret it, Lucas Knight, " I cussed.
I managed to stand up. I grabbed his shirt and jerked him with the strength left in me. I was about to tell him that I was currently pregnant when he pushed me so hard to the extent that I hit my buttock on the tiles with a heavy force. A sharp excruciating pain ran through my abdomen as I held my stomach and winced.
"Aren't you curious about my wife-to-be? The name sounds familiar, right? Your suspicion is right. Yeah, she is the one" He observed my reaction as I choked in dread.
"It can never be who I am thinking?! She is my closest friend, Lucas. She could not even kill an insect. Quit your silly tricks." I bit my lips, groaning in discomfort.
Lucas stood up and picked up the divorce document. He squatted behind me, and forced a pen into my hand, "Sign it!" he commanded.
I would have disagreed, but I couldn't as the agony consumed me. "I will sign it willingly if you promise to allow me to stay for the night with proper treatment," I bargained in a pleading tone.
"Sure. That shouldn't be too much to do." he nodded after a while.
Out of desperation, I hurriedly signed the document with tears flowing freely from my eyes. My worst nightmare had just happened. "I'm done. Can you call your doctor now?" I whimpered.
"Your situation seems familiar. Another miscarriage?" he groaned in disgust. "You do not expect me to cover up the expenses. After all, we are now strangers." he stood up and picked up the file with him while walking towards the master bedroom.
"Lucas! Please, Lucas, just do this one favor for me, and I will forgive all your brutal treatment towards me for the past years" I crawled forward until two bodyguards bagged inside to carry me out. "Let me go! Lucas!" I cried out one last time before I was forcefully shoved out of the mansion into a car.
"You came into this house with nothing, and you shall go empty-handed," I heard his voice echoing after a resounding evil laughter.
Thunder rumbled loudly before the heavy rain began to pour uncontrollably. After driving for a long while, the guards dropped me by the side of a silent and strange highway. I had no strength to call them back as a tear slid out of my eyes, groaning in pain as I wondered why my life turned out to be like this. My clothes were already soaked with blood, and the thought of my baby being dead again threw me into a wind of suicidal thoughts.
A car rushed past the road and splashed dirty water on me. I crawled to the main road and waited for the worst. The moment I saw a car speeding over, I shut my eyes and sobbed silently. It was taking too long when I was suddenly tapped by an old but healthy woman, "Young lady, what are you doing out here in the middle of the road on this cold night?" She asked in a calm tone.
That was the last sentence I heard before I fell into an unconscious state.
