Chapter 1 - I felt this way before

One rainy afternoon, as the drops pattered rhythmically against the pavement, Lexie hurried down the sidewalk, her umbrella spinning awkwardly above her head. She had been daydreaming about the latest novel she had been longing to read when, out of nowhere, she collided with someone.

"Whoa! Sorry!" Lexie exclaimed, looking up to meet the eyes of a not-so-young man who seemed lost in thought.

Ethan, she later learned his name was, barely looked her way, his focus darting to the street, clearly in a hurry. The moment felt surreal. Lexie stood frozen for a heartbeat, her gaze lingering on his unkempt hair and the way his lips twitched into a fleeting frown, a reaction completely unrelated to her. He slipped past her and disappeared into the crowd, leaving a palpable void in his wake.

Shaking her head, Lexie entered "Next Page," still shaken from their brief interaction. The bell above the door tinkled lightly as she stepped inside, but the inviting atmosphere that usually lifted her spirits felt heavy now. She wandered into the aisles, running her fingers along the spines of novels without truly seeing them, her mind replaying that single moment of contact.

"This feeling is unnatural," she murmured under her breath as she waited in the aisle, surrounded by towering shelves, "especially when I just looked at him once. It felt like I knew him before."

Lexie tried to focus on the shelves of books, but her thoughts kept drifting back to that stranger—the way his presence tumbled into her world and shook it. Feeling frustrated, she pulled out a random book and flipped it open, but the words danced on the page, refusing to make sense amidst her distraction.

Determined to rid herself of this newfound fixation, Lexie made her way toward the counter. As she approached, to her surprise, Ethan was there, standing and looking through the store's selection. He was casually dressed in a green sweater and jeans, oblivious to Lexie's arrival. Her heart raced as she hesitated, unsure of what to do next.

Taking a deep breath, Lexie decided to muster her courage and engage him. "You must have good taste," she said, her voice a mixture of nerves and playful confidence. "That's the book everyone's been talking about lately."

Ethan turned, his expression shifting from surprise to curiosity, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Oh, really? I hadn't heard," he said, a hint of a smile breaking through his initial reserve. "I just came in to grab something that caught my eye."

For a fleeting moment, the world outside faded as they exchanged pleasantries, their conversation flowing effortlessly. Lexie found herself laughing at his witty remarks, the earlier awkwardness dissolving like mist. She felt as if they had known each other for ages rather than just moments.

"Do you come here often?" he asked, tilting his head slightly, studying her face with genuine interest.

"Every chance I get," Lexie admitted, laughter bubbling in her chest. "This place has a sort of magic, don't you think?"

Ethan nodded, his gaze contemplative. "Yeah, it really does. It feels like a sanctuary."

An idea sparked in Lexie's mind, testing her limits. "How about I show you my favorite corner of the store?" Excitement mingled with a hint of trepidation as she led him deeper into the shelves.

As they walked, they stumbled upon a cozy reading nook bathed in soft light. "This is my secret spot," she declared, plopping onto a plush chair and gesturing for him to join her.

Ethan settled beside her, and for a moment, the weight of the world disappeared. They shared stories of their favorite authors, the books that had shaped their lives, and the characters that lingered in their hearts. Time became irrelevant as Lexie felt a familiarity in Ethan's presence, as if he were a long-lost friend returning home.

Eventually, they exchanged numbers with an unspoken promise to meet again, both fully aware that this encounter felt like the beginning of something beautifully unexpected. They stood at the door of "Next Page," the rain having let up, streaks of sunlight breaking through the clouds.

"Until next time," Ethan said, leaning back against the doorframe, warmth in his eyes.

Lexie smiled, her heart soaring. "Definitely."

As she walked away, her spirit buoyed by the rush of possibilities, Lexie couldn't help but glance back at the bookstore, now imbued with a new magic—one that promised friendship, laughter, and love, all sparked from a chance encounter.
