Kei wandered aimlessly, the surreal landscape around him growing darker and colder with each step. The strange glow that once illuminated the jagged structures had faded, leaving him in near-complete darkness. Only the faint cracks of light in the swirling sky provided any semblance of visibility.
His legs felt heavy, his body drained. It wasn't just exhaustion—it was as though the world itself was sapping his strength. The oppressive silence weighed on his mind, amplifying his growing fear.
Kei stumbled, catching himself on a twisted tree-like structure. Its surface was cold and smooth, like metal, but it pulsed faintly under his touch, sending a jolt of energy through his arm. He yanked his hand back, heart racing.
"You do not belong here."
The voice from before echoed again, louder this time. It wasn't a physical sound—it reverberated directly in his mind, chilling him to the core.
"Who's there?!" Kei shouted, his voice shaking. He spun around, searching the darkness, but there was nothing.
A low hum began to fill the air, growing louder with each passing second. The ground beneath him started to tremble. Kei froze as a fissure opened a few feet away, light spilling out like liquid fire. From the crack emerged a shadow—a towering figure that seemed to absorb the light around it.
The figure was featureless, its body shifting and flickering like smoke caught in a storm. But its presence was overwhelming, suffocating. Kei's knees buckled under the weight of its gaze—or what he assumed was its gaze.
"You are… unmarked," the voice boomed, emanating from the shadow. It was deep, otherworldly, and carried a weight that made Kei's chest tighten.
"Unmarked?" Kei managed to choke out. "What does that mean? Who… what are you?"
The shadow shifted, its form growing larger and more menacing. "A fragment. A stray piece in the puzzle. You are insignificant… and yet…"
It leaned closer, the darkness around it swirling like a vortex. Kei tried to move, to run, but his body refused to obey. He felt frozen, paralyzed by an unseen force.
"…and yet, you persist," the voice continued, almost amused. "Why? Do you not see? This world, your world, all worlds—they are flawed. Broken. The Void seeks to mend what was shattered. To bring unity. Perfection."
Kei's heart pounded in his chest. The words felt like they were burrowing into his mind, wrapping around his thoughts and twisting them. For a brief moment, the idea didn't seem so terrible. Unity… perfection…
"No!" Kei shouted, shaking his head. The haze lifted slightly as he forced himself to focus. "You're lying! I don't know what you are, but you're not fixing anything—you're destroying everything!"
The shadow seemed to laugh, a deep, resonant sound that made the ground tremble. "Destruction is the first step to creation. You fear what you do not understand. But soon… you will see."
Before Kei could respond, the shadow extended an arm—or what resembled an arm—toward him. Tendrils of darkness shot out, wrapping around his body. Kei gasped as a searing pain shot through him, like his very essence was being torn apart.
Images flooded his mind—visions of worlds collapsing, dimensions merging, and beings consumed by the Void. He saw faces, countless faces, screaming in terror as their realities were swallowed whole. But amidst the chaos, there was a strange beauty, a sense of order in the way the Void reshaped everything.
The pain intensified, and Kei felt his consciousness slipping. "No… I won't… let you…" he muttered weakly.
A sudden surge of light broke through the darkness, shattering the tendrils holding him. Kei collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. The shadow recoiled, its form flickering erratically.
"You resist… impressive," the voice said, its tone unreadable. "But resistance is futile. The Void will claim you, as it claims all."
The shadow began to retreat, sinking back into the fissure from which it emerged. As it disappeared, its final words echoed in Kei's mind:
"Embrace the Void, or be consumed by it. The choice is yours."
The fissure closed, and the oppressive weight lifted. Kei lay on the ground, trembling. His body ached, and his mind felt like it had been torn apart and put back together.
For the first time, he truly understood the magnitude of what he was facing. The Void wasn't just a force of destruction—it was intelligent, manipulative, and relentless.
And it had its sights set on him.
