Chapter 10 - Shattered Trust

Chapter 10: Shattered Trust

---

Opening Scene: Arden's Injury and Escalating Tension

The chapter opens in the aftermath of Arden's gunshot wound. Kieran desperately tries to staunch the bleeding, his hands trembling with fear as he applies pressure. Arden's eyes are glazed, but he remains conscious, offering quiet reassurances that only make Kieran's guilt intensify.

The pair are trapped in the venue's darkened hallways, the sound of approaching guards growing louder. With no time to waste, Kieran scoops Arden into his arms and begins to carry him toward an emergency escape route. His thoughts are a blur: the rescue was supposed to be their way out, but now Arden is injured, and they are cornered.

As Kieran drags him to safety, his mind keeps returning to the doubts he's harbored ever since hearing Arden's conversation with the unknown contact. The confusion over Arden's loyalty is overwhelming. Was Arden really trying to protect him, or was he another pawn in the syndicate's game?

The Escape and Tension: Fleeing into the Night

Kieran manages to get them onto an old, abandoned transport shuttle hidden in a dark corner of the station. He forces the shuttle's engine to start, despite his lack of expertise, and takes off into the void of space.

The shuttle shakes violently as Kieran pilots it through tight corridors of the station, avoiding pursuit. Arden, bleeding and weak, lies in Kieran's lap, whispering in broken sentences. His breathing is shallow, and he seems to be losing consciousness, but he squeezes Kieran's hand and murmurs, "We're… almost free… I promise…"

As they leave Epsilon Station behind, the stars offer no comfort, only a reminder of the vast distance between them and safety. The tension between Kieran and Arden is palpable, but there's no time for discussion. Kieran keeps his focus on getting them to a safe place while his mind churns with suspicion and fear.

Kieran's Doubt: Questions of Loyalty

Once they've reached a secure location, Kieran works frantically to stabilize Arden. As he patches up Arden's wound, he can't stop thinking about the trust that has been shattered. His earlier fear that Arden might have been playing a double game grows stronger. Kieran remembers every interaction with Arden that seemed too guarded, every silence that now feels loaded with secrets.

Kieran's internal monologue is filled with a mix of anger, confusion, and sadness. He thinks about the moments when he allowed himself to trust Arden completely. Had he been wrong all along? Had his desperation for someone to trust clouded his judgment?

After tending to Arden's injury as best as he can, Kieran leans back, exhausted and emotionally drained. Arden stirs, finally coming to, and Kieran can't hide his cold tone when he speaks.

"Why didn't you tell me the truth, Arden? Why did you let me think you were loyal to me when you've been working with them all along?"

Arden, still weak but alert, looks at Kieran with a mixture of pain and regret. His words are slow, as if each one takes effort:

"I never worked with them, Kieran. I… I've always tried to protect you. But the lines… they blur. There's no simple answer."

Kieran's frustration builds. "So what? You're just another pawn in their game? Do you think I'll believe you after everything?"

The air between them grows thick with tension, and the silence that follows is almost suffocating. Arden tries to sit up, wincing in pain, and reaches for Kieran's hand.

"I didn't want this… any of it. But I can't change what's happened. I only wanted to keep you safe."

But Kieran pulls away, his emotions too raw to process. The physical and emotional distance between them grows. He mutters, "Then why didn't you tell me the truth sooner?"

A Moment of Vulnerability: Reconciliation Attempt

Later, when Arden is resting, Kieran reflects on their shared experiences. Part of him wants to believe Arden—wants to believe that everything that's happened was a result of the messed-up world they inhabit. But there's another part of him that feels deeply betrayed, questioning every action, every word from Arden that now feels suspicious.

Despite everything, Kieran knows he can't just let their connection crumble. He hesitates, looking down at Arden, and then makes up his mind. He reaches out to touch Arden's hand, his voice unsteady.

"I… I don't know what to think anymore. But I want to believe you, Arden. I need to believe that you're not just using me, that you care."

Arden's eyes soften with gratitude and pain. "You have no idea how much I care, Kieran."

Kieran sits beside him, their hands clasped, both of them searching for words that might bridge the gap between them. As Kieran's doubts start to dissolve, he feels a fleeting moment of peace. Maybe, just maybe, Arden has been telling the truth all along.

But before they can fully reconcile, the shuttle suddenly shudders violently, and a loud bang echoes from outside. Kieran jumps to his feet, heart racing.

Cliffhanger: The Bomb

Kieran's instincts scream at him to act, but before he can reach for the controls, the shuttle lurches again, and an explosion rocks the hull. A deafening blast sends them both to the floor, the sound of alarms filling the air. Kieran, disoriented and scrambling, looks toward Arden—his heart stops when he sees Arden's body thrown against the wall, unconscious and bleeding again.

Amidst the chaos, Kieran tries to regain control of the shuttle, but it's clear they are being targeted. The explosion was no accident—it was a deliberate attack, and someone has found them.

The last thing Kieran sees before everything goes dark is the flicker of a new message flashing on the shuttle's screen:

"You should have stayed away from him, Kieran. The price of fame is far steeper than you realize."

The chapter ends with Kieran's hand reaching out for Arden's, and the shuttle plummeting into darkness.
