Chapter 21 - The Path to Gold Rank

Kai made his way downstairs, stretching his arms as the scent of fresh breakfast filled the inn. As he stepped into the dining area, he spotted Lila bustling about, tending to the guests. The moment she noticed him, she smiled, her hands on her hips.

"Well, well, look who finally decided to wake up," Lila teased, her amber eyes twinkling with amusement. "I was starting to think you'd sleep through the whole morning."

Kai chuckled, leaning against the counter. "What can I say? Beauty sleep is important, Lila. Can't go around being the Shadow Reaper with bags under my eyes."

Lila rolled her eyes, smirking. "You mean you were just too lazy to get up." She handed a tray to one of the servers before turning back to him. "Anyway, eat up before you decide to teleport off to who-knows-where again."

Kai grinned, grabbing a plate of food. "You know me too well."

After finishing his breakfast, Kai stepped outside, the crisp morning air filling his lungs. Without hesitation, he raised his hand, dark energy swirling as a Void Gate materialized before him. "Let's get this day started," he muttered to himself before stepping through.

As he emerged on the other side, he found himself standing inside the guild hall. The familiar hum of adventurers chatting, mission postings, and the occasional clang of weapons filled the space.

His eyes landed on Lyra, who was standing near the receptionist desk, scanning through some documents. The moment she looked up and spotted him, she smirked. "Back already? Didn't think I'd see you until you caused more trouble."

Kai laughed, walking over. "What can I say? The guild just isn't the same without me."

Lyra rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. So, what's the occasion? Here to flirt, or is there an actual reason for your visit?"

Kai smirked. "As much as I enjoy our chats, I'm here about my Gold Rank Promotion Test."

Lyra raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Ah, so you're finally ready for it? About time. Thought you'd stay Silver forever."

Before Kai could respond, the guild doors slammed open with a loud bang, making several adventurers turn their heads. A sharp voice screamed his name across the hall, causing Kai and Lyra to exchange a knowing glance before turning toward the entrance.

Elara stormed in, her aura radiating frustration as she locked eyes on him. "KAI!"

Kai chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. "Morning, Captain. You look as radiant as ever."

Elara's eyes narrowed. "Don't you 'morning' me! You left without a word—again! And you think that's funny?!"

Kai leaned slightly toward Lyra, his voice low but amused. "See? I told you she'd come in blazing."

Lyra shook her head. "You really do have a death wish."

Elara stalked up to him, crossing her arms. "You're impossible! And now you're just standing here smirking? Don't think for a second that I'm letting you do this test alone."

Kai raised an eyebrow, his grin widening. "Oh? So you're saying you care?"

Elara's face flushed red, and she immediately scowled. "I'm saying someone has to make sure you don't destroy the guild in the process!"

Kai chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. "Ah, so you're volunteering to be my personal bodyguard? I'm honored."

Elara groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I swear, one day... one day, Kai."

Kai turned back to Lyra, ignoring Elara's frustration for the moment. "So, what's the deal with the promotion test? How's this going to work?"

Lyra tapped her chin thoughtfully before picking up a folder from the desk. "Alright, listen up. The Gold Rank Promotion Test isn't just a regular mission. You'll be tested on three key areas: Combat Proficiency, Tactical Thinking, and Leadership."

Kai nodded. "Sounds manageable."

Lyra gave him a look. "You say that now, but the test is known for being brutal. Only the best of the best move up to Gold Rank, and it's not just about being strong. You'll be given a specialized team mission, where you'll have to lead a group of adventurers into a high-risk scenario. How you handle it determines your eligibility."

Kai smirked. "So, basically, I just have to be my usual amazing self?"

Elara scoffed. "Or, you know, not get everyone killed."

Lyra nodded. "She's right. The guild doesn't tolerate reckless decisions at Gold Rank. This isn't just about power; it's about knowing when to fight and when to strategize."

Kai exhaled, crossing his arms. "Alright, alright. I get it. So when do we start?"

Lyra handed him the mission details. "Tomorrow morning. Meet here before dawn. And bring your A-game, Kai. The test won't be easy."

Kai took the papers, his grin never fading. "Tough challenges? High stakes? Sounds like my kind of fun."

Elara sighed. "Why does everything have to be 'fun' with you?"

Kai winked at her. "Because, Captain, life's too short to be serious all the time."

Elara groaned, while Lyra simply shook her head. "This is going to be a disaster," Lyra muttered.

Kai just laughed. "Oh, come on. Have a little faith."

Kai leaned against the counter, stretching his arms lazily as he smirked at Lyra. "Well, looks like it's time for my last Silver Rank mission before I move up."

Lyra raised an eyebrow, tapping her fingers against the desk. "Oh? Finally deciding to take things seriously? I never thought I'd see the day."

Kai chuckled. "Come on, Lyra. I've always been serious... in my own way."

Elara, standing nearby, crossed her arms, her expression already showing disapproval. "And you think you're doing this alone?" she asked, her voice sharp with determination. "Where you go, I go."

Kai's smirk widened as he turned to her. "Of course, Captain. I wouldn't dream of shaking you off now."

Elara's eye twitched as her aura flared slightly. "Don't patronize me, Kai. Someone has to keep you from getting yourself killed."

Lyra chuckled, leaning on the desk with an amused smirk. "It's honestly adorable at this point."

Elara shot her a glare before turning back to Kai. "Let's just get this over with. Pick a mission."

Kai hummed to himself as he made his way over to the Mission Board, his eyes scanning the available Silver Rank Missions. He ran his fingers over the slips, muttering as he read.

Silver Rank Missions:

Mission Title: "Ruins of the Fallen King"

Objective: Investigate the ancient ruins in the north where adventurers have mysteriously vanished.

Details: Reports indicate strange magical disturbances and shadowy figures appearing at night. Find out what's going on and neutralize any threats.

Reward: 150 gold coins, an enchanted artifact.

Mission Title: "The Missing Caravan"

Objective: Locate and rescue a merchant caravan that disappeared in the western valley.

Details: Survivors who escaped say the convoy was attacked by something not entirely human. Be prepared for combat.

Reward: 130 gold coins, a merchant guild favor.

Mission Title: "Howling Abyss"

Objective: Exterminate a growing pack of dire wolves that have been attacking travelers near the eastern mountain pass.

Details: The wolves are larger and more aggressive than usual. Some suspect an external influence is making them more dangerous.

Reward: 120 gold coins, a crafted weapon.

Mission Title: "Cult of the Blood Moon"

Objective: Infiltrate and dismantle a dangerous cult rumored to be performing blood magic rituals.

Details: Reports indicate human sacrifices and an increasing influence over a local village. Investigate, rescue potential captives, and eliminate the threat.

Reward: 160 gold coins, a rare enchanted gem.

Kai's eyes lingered on the last mission. "Blood magic rituals? Now that sounds interesting," he muttered, tapping the slip.

Elara groaned, crossing her arms. "You would pick that one."

Kai smirked. "Come on, Captain. Where's your sense of adventure?"

Ignoring Elara's glare, he plucked the 'Cult of the Blood Moon' mission slip from the board and turned back toward Lyra, waving it in front of her.

"Alright, Lyra, stamp this one. Time for a proper send-off from Silver Rank."

Lyra took the mission slip and read it carefully. "You sure about this one? Blood magic cults aren't exactly light work. These guys tend to be... well, insane."

Kai grinned. "Sounds like my kind of fun."

Lyra sighed, stamping the mission for approval before handing it back. "Try not to get yourself sacrificed. I don't feel like explaining to the guild why our soon-to-be Gold Rank lunatic went missing."

Kai chuckled, slipping the mission slip into his pocket. "Don't worry, Lyra. I always come back."

Elara huffed, stepping closer. "You always say that, but one day, you're going to bite off more than you can chew."

Kai leaned slightly toward her, his crimson eyes gleaming with mischief. "And when that day comes, I know you'll be right there to save me, won't you, Captain?"

Elara's face flushed, and she immediately scowled. "Just shut up and get ready! We're leaving soon!"

Lyra laughed, watching the exchange. "Oh, this is going to be fun to watch."

Kai smirked, adjusting his cloak. "Let's get going. We've got a cult to crash."

Before leaving, Kai leaned against the counter and smirked at Lyra. "Alright, before we head off to crash a cult, mind telling me exactly where we're going?"

Lyra sighed, pulling out the official guild record for the mission. "The Cult of the Blood Moon has been active in the Ravenglen Woods, about a day's travel northeast from here. The village near it, Duskford, has reported missing people, strange chanting at night, and... well, the usual ominous cult behavior."

Kai tapped his chin. "Ominous cult behavior? Sounds delightful. Maybe they're just a really dedicated theater group."

Lyra rolled her eyes. "Yes, Kai. I'm sure the sacrificial altars and pools of blood are just for dramatic effect."

Kai grinned. "See? That's the spirit, Lyra. Gotta keep an open mind."

Elara crossed her arms, her glare sharp enough to cut through steel. "Can we go now? We have a mission, and the longer we stand here, the more time those lunatics have to cause trouble."

Kai turned to her, his crimson eyes gleaming with amusement. "Relax, Captain. It's my last Silver Rank mission. We should enjoy it. Think of it as a farewell tour."

Elara's eye twitched. "This is not a tour"

Kai's grin widened. "You're right. It's more of a date, isn't it? Just you and me, wandering the roads under the moonlight, stopping a cult together—romantic, really."

Elara's face turned red as her aura flared. "It is NOT a date!"

Lyra burst out laughing, leaning on the counter for support. "Oh, Kai, you really like living dangerously, don't you?"

Kai winked. "It's part of my charm."

Elara groaned, rubbing her temples as she muttered to herself. "One day... one day I swear I will knock him out cold."

Lyra smirked, still amused. "Elara, just admit it—you'd miss him if he stopped teasing you."

Elara shot her a deadpan glare. "I would not."

Kai stretched his arms. "Well, that's enough fun for now. Time to go hunt some cultists."

Elara exhaled sharply, clearly trying to control her frustration. "Finally. Let's just get this over with."

With that, the two of them left the guild, stepping out into the bustling city streets. The sun hung high, casting long shadows on the stone roads as they made their way toward the city gates.

Elara walked beside him, her arms crossed. "You better not mess around on this mission, Kai. Blood magic isn't something to joke about."

Kai glanced at her, his smirk never fading. "I don't joke about blood magic. Just everything else."

Elara sighed. "That's the problem. You act like nothing is serious."

Kai shrugged. "And yet, here I am, still alive. Must be doing something right."

Elara shook her head, grumbling under her breath. "I can't believe I'm stuck with you."

Kai grinned. "Aww, come on, Elara. You'd be lost without me."

Elara gave him a flat look. "Keep talking, and I'll make you get lost for real."

Kai chuckled. "Alright, alright. No need for threats. Let's go save some villagers."

As they approached the city gates, the energy between them remained the same—a mix of bickering, banter, and an undeniable dynamic neither of them quite understood yet.
