How can this be?
The hospital room was silent, only the sound of the clock continued to tick as, it was the only sound one could hear at that moment. Jayden stood frozen at the door, his breath caught in his throat, eyes locked on the fragile figure lying motionless on the bed.
This... This has to be a dream...
He staggered as his gaze fixed on the figure lying in the bed. Her once-bright Brazilian locks had lost their luster, her smooth, fair skin now marred by dark, disfiguring bruises from the fatal blows. The small, beautiful face was pale and ashen, lifeless in its slumber, and the golden pair of eyes that once shone like the sun were now shut.
A... A nightmare.... It has to be... please....
He staggered to walk closely, each step he took felt like eternity as he draw closer, his footsteps heavy as if being pierced by numerous thorns in his path as he reaches for the bed, reluctantly trying to get a closer look.
"Uriana..." He almost choked at he spoke, his voice hoarse and painful.
He tried to reach out to touch her small pale face, touch the once bright and pinkish cheeks she had which now lost their color before retracting his hand before it could even touch her.
"No..." He refused. He refuses to accept that this is happening, it can't be! It has to be a joke, a prank his mischievous little prankster of a little sister is playing, right? There's no way it's his sister; there's no way his bright Uriana is so pale and sick, there's no way she would be lying lifeless on a hospital bed, it can't be... No, It cannot be her!
He could feel his eyes wetting in disbelief, "there's no way... right? Uriana, don't scare your brother, tell me, move, Uriana..."
He begged, his hands landing on the hospital bed, slowly reaching to her hand as tears begun to slowly stream on his cheeks. When his hand touched her skin he felt an inexplicable chill in his spine, the coldness, the unbearable coldness he felt was like a harsh electricity coursing through his body making him fall on his knees as his weakened mind crashed.
"No, Uriana, are you cold? You must be, right? Don't worry, Brother is here, brother will hug you, give you warmth so you wouldn't be cold, okay? So, will you open your eyes for brother? Brother misses you, please... please don't leave your brother.... okay?"
Every word he uttered were like a last string of sanity he had, he spoke to collect himself, believe this isn't real, please, if even his sister leave him, he wont be able to bear it.
He grabbed the cold and pale hand of hers, pulling it close to his forehead to pray this is just a bad dream, a nightmare he'll wake up from once he wakes up tomorrow. Yes, cause there's no way his lovely and kind little sister is going to die in such a pitiful state.
As he thought about it, he prayed fervently, with all his heart. He had always been a religious person and had never once doubted God. He believed in Him, trusted that God would hear his prayers and grant them.
But perhaps God was truly deaf. Despite hours of desperate prayers, his answer never came, and his little sister never woke up.
