Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Netherworld Report

A sharp pain shot through Wang Yang, and he felt as if he was floating lightly, like a balloon flying upwards. Looking down, he was shocked to see himself lying on the ground, bleeding from all seven orifices, dead in a gruesome manner. A crowd of onlookers had gathered around, pointing and murmuring, just short of taking out their phones to snap a photo and post it on social media.

"What... What's going on? Am I... dead?" Wang Yang was bewildered. In this day and age, even death came so abruptly, catching one off guard.

Before he could react, two figures appeared, one tall and thin like a bamboo pole, the other short and chubby like a winter melon, both holding mourning sticks. Was this some kind of cosplay?

"Wang Yang, come with us," said the White Impermanence with a smirk, his voice as shrill as nails on a chalkboard, sending shivers down Wang Yang's spine.

"Where to? Can I... can I be saved?" Wang Yang asked, clutching at the last straw of hope.

"Saved? You've lived your life, and now you're reporting to the underworld!" rumbled the Black Impermanence, his voice like thunder, echoing in Wang Yang's ears.

"The underworld? Seriously? It really exists?" Wang Yang's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Stop wasting time, let's go!" The two Impermanences didn't hesitate, and they took Wang Yang with them.

Wang Yang was led by the two, floating along, feeling like a kite whose string had been cut. The road to the underworld was incredibly dilapidated, full of potholes, worse than the dirt roads in their village.

"I say, gentlemen, where are we headed?" Wang Yang couldn't help but ask.

"The Yellow Springs Road, the city of Fengdu. You've never seen the world, have you?" The White Impermanence rolled his eyes, looking at Wang Yang as if he were an idiot.

"The Yellow Springs Road? The city of Fengdu? Sounds quite intimidating," Wang Yang clicked his tongue, musing that the underworld seemed to have quite a cultural depth.

As they walked, Wang Yang noticed that the underworld was completely different from what he had imagined. There were no eerie wails or blood-soaked eighteen layers of hell; instead, it resembled a modern city. Skyscrapers stood in rows, luxury cars raced along the roads, and even ghostly police officers sped by in police cars, more impressive than the world of the living.

"This... This is the underworld?" Wang Yang felt his worldview shattered.

"少见多怪, these days, even the underworld has to keep up with the times," the Black Impermanence said with pride. "Now we have modern management in the underworld, and even the civil service exams require essay writing."

"Amazing!" Wang Yang gave a thumbs-up, the underworld really broadened his horizons.

"Up ahead is the Naihe Bridge. Once you cross, you'll never be able to return to the world of the living," the White Impermanence pointed to an ancient stone bridge ahead.

Wang Yang stood by the bridge, looking at the turbid river below, feeling a shiver run down his spine. "Naihe Bridge... Naihe Bridge... Alas, Naihe, Naihe," he sighed deeply, thinking of his parents in the world of the living, a pang of sorrow in his heart.

"What are you crying for, acting like a woman," the Black Impermanence impatiently urged, "Hurry up and cross, don't delay our reincarnation."

As Wang Yang was about to take a step, two figures descended from the sky, one with the head of an ox and the other with the head of a horse, both looking rather... distinctive.

"Wang Yang, come with us," the Ox Head said in a deep voice, like thunder.

"Where to?" Wang Yang was bewildered.

"To the Second Registration Office for Reincarnation in the Nether Realm. Your life is over, get ready for reincarnation," Horse Face grinned, revealing a row of yellow teeth.

Wang Yang was taken by Ox Head and Horse Face to a spacious hall where a fat man in an official robe and a black gauze hat sat. This must be the legendary judge.

"Wang Yang, male, 25 years old, unmarried, cause of death... died from staying up late?" The judge read out Wang Yang's information from the Book of Life and Death.

"Your Honor, your information is too outdated. I'm 26 now," Wang Yang couldn't help but comment.

"Silence!" The judge slammed the gavel, "I ask you, are you aware of your crimes?"

"What crime have I committed?" Wang Yang looked innocent.

"Humph, you are addicted to the internet, neglecting your duties, and often posting inappropriate comments online. Your guilt is doubled!" The judge said sternly.

"I'm wronged, Your Honor. I was just joking. I am a law-abiding citizen," Wang Yang hurriedly defended himself.

"Nonsense, I have records here." The judge pointed to a computer screen in front of him, "Look, this is your Weibo, this is your WeChat Moments, and this is your email... Hmm? Your email account is quite unique."

"Hehe, Your Honor has a good eye. I registered it specifically for collecting... uh, study materials," Wang Yang laughed awkwardly.

"Alright, if you give me your email account, I can consider giving you a chance to reform." The judge suddenly changed his tone, showing a sly smile.

"What? This... This isn't quite right, is it?" Wang Yang hesitated, as the email contained his years of collection.

"Why not? Refuse? Then wait to be reincarnated as a pig!" The judge threatened.

"Don't, don't, I'll give it, I'll give it, okay?" Wang Yang gritted his teeth and wrote down his email account.

"Your Honor, now that I've confessed, can you..." Wang Yang looked at the judge with a flattering face.

"Want to return to the world of the living?" The judge saw through Wang Yang's thoughts at a glance.

"Yes, Your Honor. I have parents to take care of... Oh no, I'm not married yet, but my parents raised me, and it's not easy for them. I haven't had the chance to repay them yet. Please be kind and let me go back," Wang Yang cried, his acting so good that the Oscars owed him a statuette.

"Well... Your filial piety is quite touching," the judge stroked his beard, "Alright, I can help you, but you have to promise me one condition."

"What condition? As long as I can do it, I'll do it!" Wang Yang said quickly.

"Give me your email account, and I... I'll help you get rid of the contents," the judge said seriously.

"This..." Wang Yang hesitated, as it was his years of hard work.

"Why not? Refuse? Then wait to be reincarnated as a cow or a horse next life!" The judge snorted coldly.

"Don't, don't, I'll give it, I'll give it, okay?" Wang Yang gritted his teeth and wrote down his email account and password. "Your Honor, you must keep your word."

"Rest assured, I am a man of my word," the judge nodded with satisfaction, "Send Wang Yang back to life!"

"Thank you, Your Honor, thank you!" Wang Yang was so grateful that he almost knelt to the judge. "There is justice in the world after all!" He thought to himself with relief.
