Chapter 7 - Chapter 6 : Double Trouble

"Are you offering me a job?"Austin asked, feeling a rush of uncertainty.

"Yes, I am," Vanessa replied, her tone earnest and confident.

Austin felt flattered in this situation, at least almost overwhelmed.

"I'm honored, really. But I can't just leave my role at Pineapple Tech," he hesitated before he spoke, "The truth is, I just started at Pineapple Tech, and I wouldn't want to quit."

"You're loyal," Vanessa interrupted. "That's a good trait, but maybe you could do both," she suggested with a casual shrug. "I'd love to see you take on this challenge. It's a huge pay, and I'm sure you will benefit from it."

He swallowed, unsure of what to say. The thought of balancing two jobs sent waves of anxiety through him. "I don't know, Vanessa… I'm still new to Pineapple Tech, and I don't want to burn any bridges."

"I know, if you think it's not for you, there's no pressure. But I believe in taking chances on people with real potential."

Austin sat back in his chair, the weight of her words sinking in.Vanessa was serious.

"And what would I even be doing at L&V Enterprises?" Austin asked, curiously.

"I have several upcoming projects in the tech sector that I believe you'd be perfect for. I could show you the ropes, give you the resources you need."

The waiter refilled their glasses, and Austin took a sip, his mind racing, giving himself a moment to think. He had bills to pay and needed money to survive in one of the most expensive cities in the world, and this could be the break he needed.

He hesitated, staring down at the table. "This is a lot to think about."

"Take your time," Vanessa said softly. "I'm not asking for an answer right now. Maybe tomorrow morning. But think deeply about it, Austin."

Austin nodded, careful to maintain his composure."I'll think about it," he said finally.

As they finished their dinner, Vanessa reached across the table, gently placing her hand over his.

"Whatever you decide," she said quietly, "just know I'll be waiting. Thanks for dinner."

Austin watched her leave the restaurant. He had come to New York for a fresh start, but now he was standing at a crossroads with choices he hadn't anticipated.

The next morning, Austin was jolted awake by the persistent buzz of his phone. With sleep still in his eyes, he squinted at the screen. An unknown number. Who could this be?. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and answered without thinking too much.

"Hello?"

"Good morning, Austin," came a familiar voice. He shot up in bed. It was Vanessa; his heart was racing.

"I hope I didn't wake you."

"No—uh, I was just... getting up," he managed, glancing at the clock. 6:00 AM. It was early, even too early for him to think straight, and her tone sounded energetic, as if she'd been awake for hours. Did she even sleep?

"So, have you thought about what we discussed last night?" Her voice softened. "I'd like an answer."

Austin rubbed his temple, trying to process. Balancing roles at both L&V Enterprises and Pineapple Tech is risky, because no one has to know. But he knew the financial opportunities he would get with her offer.

"I'd be crazy to say no." He replied so fast before he could even give critical thinking to it.

"Excellent." Her excitement and satisfaction were almost audible. "I've just acquired the company next to Pineapple Tech to keep things… convenient. I'll send over some details soon."

As the call ended, Austin stared at his phone."What? Has she really bought the building just to stay close to him or to Pineapple Tech?"

Through a secure digital workspace, Vanessa had arranged for him to work remotely for L&V Enterprises, making it easier for him to blend his two roles. Occasionally, he'd meet in person at L&V Enterprises office; Austin observed that L&V Enterprises are trying to make awesome cutting-edge projects come to life, far beyond Pineapple Tech's usual scope. He rarely saw Vanessa herself, as she was often busy with other executives. Yet even in her absence, her presence was magnetic; her intellect and quiet authority left everyone captivated.

Austin juggled both roles; his focus was slipping out of balance, and fatigue crept into his work at Pineapple Tech. One afternoon, Liam noticed his distraction.

"Hey, you alright, Austin?"

"Yeah, just… tired," Austin mumbled, quickly minimizing the L&V workspace on his screen.

"Alright, but Marcus is starting to worry. You forgot to run the final test, and now the project's fractured."

"Oh, crap!" Austin raised his eyebrow as he glanced at his screen. Reopening the Pineapple Tech project, he checked the code; it was a blurring, entangled mess. Austin wasn't happy about it.

Just then what he feared of confronting appeared when his phone buzzed with a message from Marcus saying, "We need to talk about your performance. Meet me in my office at 3 PM."

Austin's heart sank. He'd known he was slipping, but now the consequences were real. As anxiety gnawed at him, his phone buzzed again—an incoming call from Vanessa.

"Hey, stranger,"

"Vanessa," he muttered, casting a wary look around. "I'm at work. People can see me."

"Is it a crime to check on my favorite employee?" she teased, though her tone shifted as she caught his sigh. "You sound exhausted. Need a break?"

Austin let out a frustrated breath. "I can't. My boss called me in—he's noticed."

Her voice softened, almost apologetic. "I didn't realize the workload was going to hit you this hard." Her voice softened, almost apologetic. "Let me fix this."

"Fix this? How?"

"I'll talk to Marcus," she said, her tone firm. "I'll take responsibility… for the distraction. It's the least I can do."

"What? No! He can't know."

"Don't worry; the last thing I want is for you to face trouble because of me." She said, and the call ended abruptly.
