Elena's POV
"It hurts to break this to you Mrs Elena but you have Stage 3 cancer and you'd have at least 6 months to live, if a miracle occurs, we would be looking at nothing more than 1 year." It was like a bomb I wasn't quite expecting had been dropped and the pen that was playing in my fingers dropped to the table immediately.
"I'm sorry, what?" My lips quivered as I stared at him with expectant eyes hoping that he just told me it was a prank and I was just slightly ill.
"At this stage, if a surgery is scheduled; chances are slim that you would ever make it out of the theatre alive. I'm so sorry Mrs Elena." Tears slid down my eyes as he handed the test results to me.
I tried my best not to be too shocked, still hoping by a false illusion of hope that everything was going to be fine by the time I look at the results but who was I kidding?
As I opened the result, it was right there in bold red Ink: Stage 3 cancer.
My heart fell and my entire body quivered as I tried to stand up from where I had been seated.
"Mrs Elena, it's a shock; I understand. But you must try to understand and make the most out of the remaining time you have left." Sparing the doctor no words, I clutched the test results in my hands and headed out.
My eyes were blurry with tears as I hailed down a Cab.
"Where is your destination?" He asked honking the car and I wanted to ask what that was for until I saw him staring at me strangely.
"Is everything okay?" He asked.
I squinted my eyes as I subconsciously began tucking the test results inside of my hand bag.
"Do you try your best to try and question every single passenger that you give a ride?" I retorted and a smirk crossed his face before it was replaced by an irritating look.
"Well, no. All other passengers I have carried before try their best to tell me their destination before getting inside of my car. They don't come in and zone out like I'm supposed to know. I'm not a genie." I mouthed and 'oh' and apologized immediately.
He dropped me off at my destination and I ruffled through my bag to get the change I'd give him when he rolled up his car and started driving away.
I was astounded as I tried to wave him down by the side mirror and he finally began driving backward.
"You forgot the payment for your services." I said handing out the dollar bill in my hands but he smiled and shook his head slightly.
"I didn't forget it, you can keep it. Also don't forget that no matter what happens in life, life goes on." He stated and I felt my eyes start brimming hot with tears while he drove away and his car disappeared from plain site.
I straightened my dress as I got to the gate and pulled out the test results.
The only thing I hadn't figured out yet was how Audre was going to react, I'm not exactly sure.
As I entered the living room, he wasn't there as he would go to work so I just dropped my bag on the table when I started hearing muffled noises from the bedroom.
I tiptoed, scared of the unknown but as I got closer, it became more and more clearer that those weren't just muffled noises, they were moans.
I peeped from the key hole but couldn't quite make out the figures that were on the bed.
"You promised me that you would do away with her. Why haven't you given her the divorce letter yet?" The voice sounded like that of my best friend, heck yes! It was my best friend. Sonia!
"And I promised you that I will. I just need some more time, I still need to get someone for a good car deal and everything would be fine. She'll be divorced and we will travel abroad. It's a win-win situation." He snuggled her up in his arms and I immediately used my free hand to cover up my mouth so I didn't scream out loud due to the hurt that was coursing through my veins. This was all too much for me to handle.
"So pathetic of her. It makes my skin crawl whenever she goes about gallivanting and telling everyone that she's 'Mrs Audre,' sometimes I feel like punching the words back into her lips." Sonia said and I immediately pulled off my jacket and bit hard on it to stop me from actually screaming.
I tried my best not to yell because I believed it was better to hold on and listen to everything they had to say.
"Mrs Audrey? That indeed is pathetic. Don't worry, soon the title would belong to the one and only person that truly deserves it, which is you sweetheart." Another loud annoying kiss that made me squat slowly as tears poured out of my eyes.
Hurt from knowing that I could die soon and hurt from knowing that I could be divorced, both seemed like they would overwhelm me and strike me dead on the spot.
"Do you still have sex with her?" There was annoyance and irritation in Sonia's voice as she asked and I scoffed.
This must be the reason why Audrey had constantly claimed he was busy and we couldn't have sex. So much for being loyal to one man.
"Of course not. I stopped touching her a long time ago." He enunciated and they both giggled.
"That's a relief. I wouldn't have been able to hear the thought that I was sharing a man with a pathetic, poor lady." My heart crumbled into pieces as my eyes were wet with tears.
My heart was surely skipping beats as I placed my hands on the door frame for support.
"She can never be your competition. And I mean never. She doesn't level up." At that moment, I told myself that I had indeed had enough. The door was slightly open and I pushed it wide open standing in the doorway with tears in my eyes as they both stared at me in shock.
"Elena, oh my goodness. It's not what it seems like." Sonia was quick to start calling and I tried swallowing the tears and muffled sounds as my heart gave an indefinite rhythm. I'm surely skipping breaths and it's not even good for my health.
"How long have you been outside the door for?" Audrey asked like he knew that before I would even open the door with tears in my eyes, I must have heard a great deal.
I wrapped my arms around my body as I felt cold, sick and disheartened.
"Long enough." I said in a very low voice as I stared back and forth between them. My head was banging like it was being hit with a hammer and I placed my hands on my chest hoping it would ease the pain.
"Well then, there's no need to pretend anymore." Sonia sighed while sitting back down on the bed snuggling into Audre's arms.
"Sonia, shouldn't you be remorseful?" I asked not knowing what else to say as it felt like my heart was being squeezed.
"Remorseful for what? It's not like you're his wife anyways, look at you, what do you think you have to keep him?" She sighed and I squinted my eyes wondering what she was talking about.
"What do you mean?" I queried. My head was spinning, double heartbreaks in one day wasn't something I could deal with. I wasn't even sure how to react as I just stood there while tears rolled out.
"I was waiting for the right time to tell you that we're divorced. Here." He pushed an envelope to me and I bent to pick it up. While going over the contents, I sighed.
"This is for our joint account, I know when I signed this." I wondered what he was getting out.
"Read it properly this time and check everything from the front page to the center and back leaf." He said and my fingers were shaking while I read through. Everything seemed quite normal until I got to the middle sheet and there it was, "Marriage Annulment."
"You tricked me into signing this?" I yelled. This was the first time I was yelling because the shock was too much for me to bear.
"I didn't trick you. You're the one that trusted too much and didn't even bother to go over the files I gave you And just signed." He smirked, I felt like punching the pain I was feeling in my chest into his face.
"So it was a crime to trust my husband? And you Sonia? You claimed that you're my best friend yet you've been a snake all this while?" My voice broke as I choked on my own tears.
"Call me whatever you want, I don't care much as long as I'm in the arms of a man that loves me." She said and they both giggled as he ruffled her hair and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
"This is why I love you." Audre mouthed while I stared back and forth at their exchange.
"Audre, please tell me all this is a prank. Tell me you're all joking, you all won't really do this to me right?" My lips shivered as I stared at them and suddenly it felt like my head was swirling and the entire room was just a haze of blurry darkness.
Just in cue, I felt myself falling and while I tried to grope for something to hold, there was nothing and my body hit the ground with a thud. Just after that, the room went dark and all I could hear was thick deafening silence.
