You can skip this if you like, it's mostly just for me πŸ‘

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

It was around the beginning of Winter. A soft veil of frost coated the windows, shrouding the classroom within from wayward gazes. Standing in front of rows of students was a fine young woman, dark brown hair tucked neatly into a ponytail, brimming with the elegance of a swan… Perhaps a moderate amount of hyperbole, but that's beside the point. The day was nearing its end and I was soon to be relieved of my duties for the day.

As always, I stayed late, whether it be to grade papers or simply because I was cold and didn't feel like leaving the warmth of the school just yet. It was the latter… Heating my own home was costly. I thought I would be able to wait out the cold, but of course, that didn't work. After 3 hours, when even the janitor had left, I decided it was time to suck it up and leave. Stepping through the doorway, I was immediately struck with chills. Perhaps it was just the fact that I had been spared from the cold for so long, but it seemed that the temperature had actually dropped in the time I was avoiding it. Just my luck.

Shivering, I ran through the parking lot for my car. A safe space from the frigid air and slowly falling snow. Without a moment's hesitation, I thrusted the key into the ignition and twisted, blasting the heat to fend off the cold that had seeped into the seats throughout the day. After thoroughly basking in the warmth, I began the drive home.

As I neared my destination, a mere 5 minutes from home, a young girl no older than 16 stepped from the sidewalk onto a crosswalk and into the way of traffic. Perhaps it was by a brief moment of carelessness or my own accumulated exhaustion, but I didn't fully register her presence. As it would seem, she didn't notice me either as my headlights drew closer and closer. When I regained awareness, it was too far too late. In an effort to avoid a collision, I jerked the wheel to the right, only to slam into the side of a building.

…Obligatory woman driver joke.

Amidst flashing lights and the thick taste of iron permeating my breath, my mind was in a million pieces. Everything seemed distant, muted, as I tried to piece together what had transpired. It was painfully obvious, but it simply wouldn't click... Like a vivid hallucination from which I couldn't escape. Rapid loss of mental faculties in the face of impending death tends to do that to you. Or perhaps I was already dead, my consciousness giving one last "hoo-rah!", a cry to the world that it wasn't finished just yet. It doesn't matter now though- My fleeting life had reached its conclusion.
