Chapter 21 - A Reliable Hand (5)

Wait.

My brain short-circuited for a second.

The fuck?

I blinked.

Then again.

"Huh?"

I was expecting Midoriya and Momo to win. That made sense.

But why the hell am I second?

What the fuck happened?

A beat of silence passed before heads started turning toward me.

I couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable as I felt the weight of their gazes.

I'm still lost on how this happened, I didn't even vote for myself!

I voted for Ida since he was going to be the representative at the end and maybe cause I felt pity that he wouldn't have any vote.

What the hell just happened? How did I have two votes?

If I voted for myself, wouldn't that mean I would have been rivaling Midoriya?

Did I make a mistake about not taking the voting seriously?

Nah, no one would predict this would happen.

"Azaria!" Mina's voice yanked me out of my thoughts. "How do you have two votes?"

"Yeah, yeah." Denki leaned in, a mischievous grin stretching across his face. "I didn't know you had fans here."

I blinked at the board, then at the rest of the class, who all seemed equally baffled.

"I don't actually know," I admitted, still processing. "I'm just as shocked as you guys. I wasn't expecting this at all."

Whispers rippled through the classroom, a mix of curiosity and disbelief.

Bakugo was visibly trembling. His fists clenched, veins popping in his forehead as he stared at the board.

"What the...?" His voice was low at first, but then it erupted. "WHO THE HELL VOTED FOR DEKU?!"

Sero, standing beside him, burst out laughing. "Well, we know it wasn't you."

Bakugo's eye twitched.

Meanwhile, Ida was having his own breakdown.

"One vote…" he muttered, falling to his knees in dramatic despair. "I-I thought as much… This is the harsh reality of leadership!"

Mina giggled at his theatrics, while Kirishima gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder.

My gaze landed on Uraraka who was whistling as Bakugo continued his rambling.

In the story, Uraraka and Ida voted for Midorya. But who the hell actually voted for me?

What did they see in me? Fuck that, I don't want to know.

They just drafted me to hell—fucking staffroom.

No where else but to feel extremely uncomfortable as a spy.

But who would vote for me and why?

My eyes flickered to Denki and Mina, they were chatting about a meme.

Yeah, no.

I don't know about Mina but Denki would have rubbed it in my face.

This is a fucking pain.

Still trying to wrap my head around it, I got up from my seat and walked to the front of the class, joining Midoriya.

He was shaking.

Not just nervous shaking, he was trembling.

His entire body stiff like he had just been thrown into a battlefield unarmed.

I scanned the room again. Nothing.

No one's face gave anything away except for Mina and Denki, who were trying way too hard not to laugh.

If I didn't just see their names on the board, I'd swear they were the ones who voted for me.

This is so fucking awkward.

"Th-th-th-th-thank you e-e-everyone," Midoriya stammered, his voice barely holding together. "I-I'll do my b-best!"

I sighed inwardly.

This was going to be a long day.

I lazily pointed at Midoriya. "Yeah. What he said."

***

The cafeteria was packed as expected.

The lunchtime rush had turned the place into a chaotic mess of students scrambling for seats and shouting over one another. The usual.

I weaved my way through the crowd, still lost in thought about the ridiculous results of the class rep voting.

Two votes.

Two.

I wasn't even mad, just confused.

Who the fuck saw me and thought, 'Yeah, that guy should be in charge?'

It wasn't Mina or Denki, I already ruled them out.

They would've been way too proud of themselves and rubbed it in my face.

Iida didn't even vote for himself, so it definitely wasn't him.

My gaze flickered to the lunch tables, scanning for an open seat. That's when I heard—

"Azaria!"

I barely had time to react before Mina grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward a table.

I stumbled forward, barely catching myself as I found Uraraka, Midoriya, Iida, Mina, and Denki all sitting together.

Hmm?

Did this happen in the story?

Mina grinned. "C'mon, Mr. Assistant Class Rep, you're sitting with us."

I blinked. "You don't have to call me—"

"Dude, you got votes," Denki cut in, patting an empty seat beside him. "That means you're important now, Mr Assistant Class Rep."

Midoriya looked just as uncomfortable as me.

He was nervously eating his food, his shoulders tense as if the weight of responsibility had physically manifested on his back.

I felt sad for him, they were probably teasing the hell out of him.

"Ohhh, our boys are climbing the ranks!" Mina teased, winking at me before turning to Midoriya. "Deku, how does it feel to be class rep?"

Midoriya flinched, his face heating up. "Ah, uh, I—um—w-well, it's a lot of responsibility, so I—uh—"

I sighed. "They're going to keep going until we acknowledge it, huh?"

Denki leaned in, smirking. "Obviously."

Mina gasped dramatically. "Of course! This is a big deal!" She gestured wildly at Midoriya. "Look at him—shaking in his boots. And then we have Azaria over here, pretending like he didn't just get voted second-in-command. What are the odds?"

"You tell me." I muttered, resting my chin on my palm.

"So basically" Denki chewed on his meal. "Our representatives consists of a nerd and a bad boy."

"No offense Azaria," Uraraka interjected. "But I surprised that you were voted for."

The fuck?

Why did she just say that?

I didn't want to be voted for but why does this kinda hurts?

Why do people say no offense before saying the offensive things?

Like do you think it would negate it?

I as a person, would actually never do that.

"Nah, none taken." I took a gulp of water. "To be honest, I'm surprised how I got a vote."

"Oh, speaking of that…"

Denki leaned in like he had classified intel, lowering his voice.

"By the way, I think I know who voted for you."

I gave him a blank stare. "Oh?"

Denki nodded. "Yeah. It was Momo."

I blinked.

Mina blinked.

Midoriya and Uraraka blinked.

Ida looked up, suddenly interested.

Denki grinned. "Yeah, man, it makes sense. This morning, I saw you wave at her all awkwardly—like, real stiff, real weird, real sus."

He demonstrated by doing the most robotic, cringe-inducing wave I'd ever seen.

"So, obviously, she must've thought it was cute or something and boom—vote."

I deadpanned.

"That didn't happen," I said flatly.

"It totally did," Denki shot back. "I was right there, dude."

"No, you weren't."

"Yes, I was."

"No, you weren't."

Denki turned to the others. "Guys, listen, I swear, I saw this happen. Our boy Azaria gave her this shy little wave, and Momo felt something. Like, her heart skipped a beat, man. I saw it."

Midoriya looked both intrigued and uncomfortable. Uraraka was trying not to laugh.

Ida, to my horror, seemed to be considering the theory seriously.

Mina, however, just stared at Denki, then at me, then back at Denki.

"…Wait," she said slowly. "When did this happen?"

"I saw it happen live." He tapped his temple. "This morning, during class."

Mina's eyes narrowed. "During class?"

Denki nodded sagely. "Yup. I caught him."

I shot him a glare. "No, you didn't."

"Oh, I definitely did."

Iida adjusted his glasses, considering. "Hmm… It's a logical deduction. Momo is highly perceptive. Perhaps she sensed something in Azaria's character that compelled her to vote for him."

Uraraka looked intrigued. "Maybe she saw something in him."

Denki leaned in closer. "Maybe she felt something."

Mina's eyes flickered between us. "Wait—so, did you wave at her?"

I sighed, rubbing my temple. "Like a normal person."

Denki grinned through his teeth. "Yeah. A nervous normal person."

I shifted my foot and stomped down on his.

"GAH—"

Denki barely swallowed his yelp, shooting me a look of betrayal.

I took a sip of my drink, acting like nothing happened. "Drop it."

"Well I think it's great!" Iida suddenly cut in, looking way too passionate about this. "You two have been entrusted with a great responsibility. The class has spoken! You must carry this duty with honor and dignity!"

I side-eyed Midoriya, silently asking if he understood even half of what Iida was on about.

He didn't.

Neither did I.

"Right," I said instead. "Totally."

Iida adjusted his glasses, pushing his tray forward slightly. "But there is something I must confess… I originally wished to become the class representative myself!"

Oh great, here we go.

"However!" He stood up abruptly, slamming his hands on the table. "I was mistaken!"

The entire cafeteria turned to look at him.

I fought the urge to facepalm.

"I voted for Midoriya because a true leader must be chosen by their peers!" Iida continued, completely unfazed by the attention. "That is what I learned from my older brother—Ingenium!"

"Hmm?" Uraraka raised an eyebrow "But you had a vote, that means someone voted for you."

I took a huge bite out of my food, trying not to look at them.

"Yes, it seems so." Ida adjusted his glasses.

Midoriya perked up. "Ingenium…? You mean the pro hero?"

Iida nodded, his expression proud. "Yes! He is a remarkable man! He has led many heroes with conviction, and I strive to follow in his footsteps!"

I picked up my drink, taking a slow sip.

This dude was really out here giving a whole TED talk in the middle of lunch.

Uraraka clapped her hands together. "Whoa, that's so cool! I had no idea you were related to a pro hero!"

"Indeed!" Iida placed a hand on his chest, looking absolutely majestic for no reason. "And so, I shall assist you both in your duties, should you ever require it!"

Midoriya looked genuinely touched. "T-thank you, Iida! That means a lot!"

"Yeah, thanks, man," I added, half-distracted as I glanced at the clock.

My mind was focused on something else..

The next thing that was supposed to happen was the security alarm going off.

That meant Shigaraki was already outside.

In the story, it should be anytime from now.

If everything was happening exactly as it did in the story, there was one particular name I couldn't shake.

Aoyama.

I tapped my fingers against my tray.

I glanced around the cafeteria, scanning faces.

Where was he?

My eyes moved over groups of students, searching for a head of messy blond hair and that shiny aura.

But no matter where I looked, I couldn't find him.

That's when it clicked.

Right.

'He eats in the classroom.'

I exhaled sharply.

How the hell did I forget that?

That meant while we were all here, he was back in class—probably alone.

I stared at my tray, my mind racing.

This was an opening.

If Aoyama was working with the villains, he had to be sending them information somehow.

I didn't know when, I didn't know how—but if there was a moment for him to act, it was when no one was watching.

That meant if I wanted to catch him, I had to move. Now.

I pushed my tray forward and stood up.

Mina immediately noticed. "Huh? Where are you going?"

I searched for a quick excuse. "Class."

Denki raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

Before I could answer—

WEEOOO!! WEEOOO!! WEEOOO!!

A blaring alarm cut through the air. A robotic voice echoed loud from the speakers.

"Security Level Three has been broken. All students, kindly evacuate in an orderly fashion."

The cafeteria froze for half a second.

Then chaos erupted.

Students scrambled out of their seats, panicked voices rising all at once.

"WHAT'S HAPPENING?!"

"IS IT A VILLAIN ATTACK?!"

"WHAT'S SECURITY LEVEL THREE?"

"SOMEONE INFILTRATED THE BUILDING!"

"EVERYONE, RUN!!!"

The crowd moved like a tidal wave, everyone rushing toward the exits in sheer panic.

I could only curse inwardly as I stared at the commotion.

"Ah, I'm fucking late."
