Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: A Heavy Price

The fires in Skyfall had finally dimmed, leaving behind a smoldering wasteland where the village had once thrived. The battle was over, but the scars it left behind were deep—both in the land and in Kael's heart.

Kael sat on the edge of what had been the village square, staring at the Godshard in his hand. Its glow was dim now, pulsing faintly like a dying ember. The power within it felt distant, almost silent, as if it too mourned the destruction.

Lira approached, her face streaked with soot and blood, her eyes sharp yet heavy with exhaustion. She sat beside him, her usual fire replaced with a rare moment of quiet. "We won, Kael," she said softly, though her tone lacked triumph.

Kael shook his head. "Did we?" His voice was hollow, his eyes scanning the ruins of his home. "Skyfall is gone. These people… they trusted me. And I couldn't save them."

The survivors of the village gathered what little they could salvage, their faces pale and eyes hollow. Families huddled together in silence, their lives forever changed.

Erynn joined Kael and Lira, her hands stained with ash as she carried a makeshift stretcher for a wounded villager. Her scholarly demeanor was gone, replaced with a grim determination. "The people will recover," she said, trying to reassure Kael. "But they need a leader now more than ever."

Kael's grip on the shard tightened. "A leader?" He scoffed, his voice tinged with bitterness. "I'm no leader, Erynn. I'm barely holding myself together. This shard… it's like a curse. Every time I use it, I destroy something. I don't even know if I'm strong enough to control it."

"You are," Erynn said firmly, kneeling beside him. "You've already proven that. But you need to accept that the path you've chosen isn't easy. There will always be a price, Kael. That's what makes it worth fighting for."

Lira stood and crossed her arms, her expression unreadable. "She's right, you know. I don't think any of us asked for this—least of all you. But here we are."

Kael looked up at her, searching for the defiance he'd come to expect, but instead, he found understanding.

"You saved us, Kael," Lira continued. "You made sure Thorne and his men didn't leave with that shard. And yeah, it cost us. It cost a lot. But if you're going to carry that thing, you need to figure out whether it's going to control you or the other way around."

Kael stood, his legs trembling beneath him. The weight of his choices felt heavier now than ever before. He looked at the Godshard, its faint glow casting light on his scarred hands.

"I don't know if I'm strong enough," he admitted.

"You are," Erynn said, rising to meet him. "But strength doesn't mean doing this alone. You have us. And together, we'll face whatever comes next."

Kael looked between Lira and Erynn, their resolve a stark contrast to his doubts. Slowly, he nodded. "Then let's make sure this never happens again. No more running. No more hiding. If the Empire wants the shards, they'll have to go through us."

As the sun set over Skyfall's ruins, Kael, Lira, and Erynn prepared to move on. The battle had ended, but its cost lingered—a painful reminder of what was at stake.

Kael felt the weight of the shard grow heavier, not physically, but in his soul. It wasn't just a tool; it was a responsibility, one he could no longer ignore.

He turned to his companions, his voice steady but somber. "Let's go. We have a world to save."

Together, they walked away from the ruins, the shattered remnants of their first battle behind them. Ahead lay the unknown—a path of danger, sacrifice, and the hope of something better.

But for Kael, the true battle was only beginning.
