Chapter 13 - 13. Phone Call

"Do I have to tell you what to do?" Layla uttered in a condescending tone of voice as she peered at the rearview mirror, catching the eyes of the driver. The driver swallowed loudly and shook his head before hurriedly stepping out of the car and rushing behind to open the door on Layla's side.

Cassie could only watch and shake her head in disappointment. Whatever was pricking Layla was bad for her to met her anger on the poor driver. Cassie didn't know anymore if she was the sole cause of Layla's annoying attitude this evening or if there were other things, and she couldn't ask. Truth be told, Cassie didn't care anymore. She had grown used to Layla being a spoilt brat and from time to time, she would exhibit such trashy behaviours.

Cassie exhaled and looked at the driver as he stood by the door holding it until Layla alighted the car. He remained there, holding the door as he thought that Cassie would also come down through the same door but Cassie had already opened hers and stepped out.

"Don't worry about me," Cassie told me as she noticed he was still standing. "You can close it."

The driver nodded and jammed the door before proceeding to the driver's side to park the car properly since he had only dropped the ladies in front of the Greys' mansion. It was a beautiful mansion, and a sight at it would tell an onlooker that millions were burned into erecting such a majestic structure. The driver veered the car around the big, flowing fountain that sat right at the centre of the mass of land where the Greys lived.

Everywhere was lit and bright to the utmost, spotlessly neat as it was regularly cleaned up by the servants and an air of fresh air that Cassie seemed to enjoy as she walked towards the entrance. Approaching, she noticed two maids already waiting for her before she stopped and smiled at them. They smiled back and curtsied.

"Welcome back, madam," the maids chorused.

Cassie nodded her head and smiled even more before reaching for her bag and taking out three boxes of some exotic chocolate candies. Seeing this, their mouths started to instinctively water as they anticipated it.

"Here," Cassie said as she handed it to the older of the two maids. "It's not much but I'm sure it would reach everyone."

They curtsied again and collected the candy boxes while they giggled to themselves sheepishly. Cassie observed them briefly and shook her head before entering the house. They were like kids whose parents had given them a surprise gift. They were happy about it. The maids had come out to welcome Cassie and also help to carry her things if she had so much, but Cassie had made it noteworthy to them that she carried her personal bag, and whatever else was left, they would handle it. This was no different since all she had was the bag.

Cassie exhaled with relief and fell freely onto the couch in the massive living room. She loosened the buttons of her shirt, exposing a bit more of her cleavage as she glued her eyes to the drama playing on the TV. Cassie was tired and it was obvious on her face. She loosened her heels and finally arranged her things to go to her room when a familiar figure entered with a plate of snacks in his hand.

Cassie noticed him and was startled, stepping backwards as she skipped a heartbeat.

"My God, Uncle Leon!" she exclaimed as she placed her hand on her chest as if to control her breathing. "You scared me."

Leon chucked, his laughter even resonated with wealth as he threw some of the snacks into his mouth. "Did I startle you, dear? Sorry about that."

Leon moved over to one of the couches to sit and watch TV.

"Good evening, Uncle."

"Good evening, Cassie," Leon replied as he glanced at the clock. "Things must have gotten so busy at the company after I left, I guess."

Leon knew that nothing much happened that warranted the two ladies to return this late but he didn't want to be direct about it. Cassie, on the other hand, also knew this. He was the CEO, after all. Most of the daily dealings that happened at Grey Corps were relayed by Leon Grey, who has no knowledge of it.

Cassie didn't answer.

It wasn't in her place to do so, and Leon didn't pry any further as he concentrated on the show, allowing Cassie to go.

Just then, a phone rang out — Cassie's phone. Leon, being closer to the phone, decided to help and pick it up as he handed it to her. He had caught a glimpse of the caller, and this caused him to narrow his gaze, momentarily hesitating to give his niece the phone as if he wanted to be certain who it was.

.

.

[Dane Morgans]

.

.

'Dane...?' Leon thought, observing how quickly Cassie swatted the phone from his hand without even realising what she had done.

"Thank you, uncle!" Cassie blurted out as she stormed out of the living room to her room.

Leon watched her closely and how hurriedly she left as if she was trying to avoid something. He couldn't help but wonder why Dane Morgans would be calling his niece by this time of the day.

Wasn't he still on his break, to resume the next week?

While Leon didn't want to think much about it, he also couldn't help it, given Cassie's reaction to collecting the phone. Something was definitely up but he couldn't pinpoint what that was. Leon's gut feeling did not approve of this call, and he was a man who had seen a few decades on Earth and had built himself into who he was now.

There was nothing he trusted as much as his gut feeling.

He just chuckled and turned back to the TV, resolving to settle whatever it was between Cassie and Dane later. If it was something he needed to curb and destroy before it sprouted into something else, he would. If it was trivial, he would let it go.
