Chereads / The Lantern of Lost Wishes / Chapter 3 - The Warning

Chapter 3 - The Warning

The forest pressed in, its darkness as stifling as a held breath. Twisted branches clawed at the air like skeletal fingers, their jagged shapes stark against the faint glimmer of moonlight. Elyra gripped Mira's hand tightly, her eyes darting toward every sound—a snapping twig, the distant cry of an unseen bird. An unnatural chill laced the air, brushing her skin like a ghost's touch.

"Stay close to me," Elyra whispered, her voice firm yet low enough to avoid carrying. "No matter what, don't let go."

Mira nodded mutely, her eyes wide, glinting like twin moons in the dim light. Her trembling grip tightened, the small gesture betraying her fear.

The Lantern hung at Elyra's side, its golden glow faint yet unwavering. Though its light should have been a source of comfort, it felt oddly foreboding tonight—a reminder of the weight it carried and the dangers it attracted.

As they pressed deeper into the forest, a voice, soft and melodic, sliced through the oppressive quiet.

"Lost souls have no place here..."

Both froze, the words winding around them like smoke. The voice came from nowhere and everywhere all at once. Elyra's heartbeat thundered in her chest as she yanked Mira behind her, one hand reaching for her dagger.

From the shadows emerged a figure both breathtaking and unnerving. She moved like water, fluid and deliberate, her silvery hair flowing down her back like a cascade of starlight. Her eyes gleamed violet, faintly glowing as if they held secrets of their own. Her lips curved into a smile—not warm, but knowing.

"Who are you?" Elyra demanded, her tone as sharp as the blade in her hand.

The woman tilted her head, her expression serene yet unsettling. "Names... names are like feathers in the wind, fleeting and easily lost. But if you must, you may call me Saria." Her eyes shifted toward the Lantern. "And you, young wanderer, carry something... extraordinary."

Elyra stepped forward, placing herself between Saria and Mira. The dagger caught the lantern's faint light as she raised it slightly. "Stay back."

Saria's laugh was light, almost musical, yet it sent a shiver down Elyra's spine. "Oh, brave one, if I intended harm, you wouldn't have seen me coming."

Mira tugged at Elyra's sleeve, her voice barely a whisper. "She's... she's not normal, Elyra."

Elyra didn't respond, her eyes locked on Saria's every movement. Something about the woman's presence was hypnotic, like watching a storm build on the horizon.

"If you're not an enemy," Elyra said carefully, "then what do you want?"

Saria's smile softened, a hint of sadness flickering across her face. "To warn you. The path you tread will lead to answers, yes, but also unimaginable dangers. The Lantern is a beacon—not just to those who wish upon it, but to forces far darker."

"And why should I believe you?" Elyra asked, her grip tightening on the dagger's hilt.

Saria's violet eyes darkened, her smile fading. "Believe what you will, child. I am but the messenger. What you choose to do with my warning is yours alone to decide."

Before Elyra could demand more, the shadows around Saria swirled, enveloping her like a shroud. In the blink of an eye, she was gone, leaving only the faint echo of her voice.

Mira broke the silence, her voice trembling. "What does she mean? What's going to happen to us?"

Elyra sheathed her dagger, forcing calm into her voice. "I don't know yet. But we've come this far. We'll figure it out."

The forest thickened as they pressed on, each step a battle against their rising unease. The Lantern's glow flickered, mirroring the tension that gripped them both. Then, as the trees parted, they stumbled into a clearing bathed in an ethereal silver light.

At the center stood an ancient stone archway, its surface carved with runes that pulsed faintly, almost like a heartbeat. Elyra's breath caught at the sight.

"This wasn't on any map," she murmured, taking a cautious step forward.

Mira hesitated, her gaze flitting between the archway and the dark forest. "Maybe we shouldn't—"

A roar shattered the silence, deep and primal, vibrating through the ground beneath them. From the shadows emerged a creature as grotesque as it was monstrous. Its form was an unholy fusion of muscle and shadow, its eyes burning with a golden fire that mirrored the Lantern's glow.

Elyra shoved Mira behind her, drawing her dagger. "Run if you have to!" she barked.

But Mira stood her ground. "I'm not leaving you!"

The creature charged, its claws slicing through the air. Elyra darted to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike. Her mind raced as she glanced at the archway. The runes—there had to be a reason they were glowing.

"Mira! The runes!" she shouted. "See if you can read them!"

Mira dashed to the archway, her hands shaking as they traced the ancient symbols. "It's... it's some kind of incantation!" she stammered.

"Then activate it!" Elyra yelled, dodging another attack.

Mira's voice quavered as she began reciting the runes aloud, each word foreign and halting. The symbols flared to life, their glow intensifying as the hum in the air grew deafening.

The creature lunged, its claws inches from Elyra's chest, when a blinding light erupted from the archway. The force of it sent Elyra sprawling to the ground, her vision swimming with stars.

When the light faded, the clearing was eerily quiet. The creature was gone, leaving no trace it had ever been there.

Mira rushed to Elyra's side, helping her to her feet. "What just happened?" she asked, her voice shaky but determined.

Elyra stared at the now-dormant archway, her heart pounding. "I don't know," she admitted. "But whatever this is, it's more dangerous than we imagined."

The forest seemed to hold its breath around them as they exchanged a glance.

"We need answers," Elyra said firmly. "And we're not stopping until we get them."

The Lantern pulsed at her side, its light steady yet ominous. With a final look at the archway, Elyra led Mira back into the forest, the shadows closing in behind them.
