Chapter 31 - Ancient Structure

After two whole days of trudging through the barren desert, Finn was beginning to lose hope. The endless stretch of golden sand seemed to stretch out before him forever, and each step felt heavier than the last. He hadn't seen a single living creature—no monsters, no signs of life, not even the faintest tracks in the sand. The isolation of the desert was oppressive, a weight pressing down on his chest.

His nerves had been on edge from the very beginning. When he hadn't encountered anything on the first day, an unease had settled deep within him. The thought of not fulfilling his daily sacrifices to Riven had gnawed at him, especially with the terms of their contract still fresh in his mind. The demands were clear: two monsters per day. Finn had been diligently feeding Riven every monster he could find, but what would happen if he couldn't make the required sacrifices? The thought made his stomach churn. Would Riven punish him for failing to uphold his end of the bargain?

But to his surprise, Riven had granted him some leniency. The immortal had allowed him to forgo the sacrifices for a couple of days, an unexpected gift that had lifted the pressure. Riven's motives were always unclear, but Finn had learned to take any reprieve with gratitude. It didn't make the desert any less empty, but it had allowed him to keep moving without the constant dread of breaking his pact.

Still, two days without any monsters was beginning to wear on him. He had grown used to hunting for his survival, using the encounters as both a means to grow stronger and a way to feed his contract with Riven. The silence and emptiness of the desert only served to heighten his growing sense of isolation. What was the point of wandering aimlessly in a world where there was nothing left to fight, no challenges to face?

As the second day wore on and the sun began to dip beneath the horizon, casting long shadows across the sand, Finn prepared to settle into his subspace for the night. The familiar, comforting sensation of stepping into his own pocket dimension was a welcome relief. He had just begun the process of opening the portal when something in the distance caught his eye.

For a moment, Finn thought it might be a trick of the heat, a mirage shimmering in the distance. But as he focused, the outline of a structure became clearer, rising out of the sand like a forgotten relic. His heart skipped a beat. This was the first sign of something other than desert he had encountered in days.

Could it be a dungeon? Or perhaps a remnant of some ancient civilization, lost to time? Finn's mind raced as he adjusted his stance, squinting at the shape in the distance. There was no way to know for sure, but he had to investigate.

His muscles tensed, his curiosity outweighing his weariness. With renewed determination, he abandoned the idea of his subspace for the night and began making his way toward the structure. The thought of something, anything, other than endless sand was enough to push him forward. Each step felt lighter, a spark of hope flickering in his chest.

As he drew closer, the structure began to take shape. The rough outlines of jagged stone and crumbling walls appeared, standing tall and imposing against the flat expanse of the desert. Whatever it was, it had endured the ravages of time, and the air around it seemed to hum with ancient energy. Finn's pulse quickened. This could be the discovery he'd been waiting for.

With every step, his anticipation grew. The prospect of something new—something challenging—was a welcome change from the emptiness of the desert. Whatever lay ahead, Finn was ready.

As Finn approached the structure, the air grew thicker, and the temperature seemed to shift. The oppressive heat of the desert gave way to a strange coolness, as though the very stones of the building held some ancient magic. His heart raced with a mixture of excitement and caution. There was no telling what this place was or what lay inside, but the promise of something beyond the endless sand was enough to drive him forward.

The closer he got, the more details became visible. The building was massive, towering even in the midst of the desert's vast emptiness. The walls were made of dark, weathered stone, covered in intricate carvings that Finn couldn't quite make out from this distance. Some of the symbols seemed familiar, reminding him vaguely of ancient runes, though he couldn't place their meaning. His thoughts flitted back to his encounter with the dungeon near the forest—this felt different, but there was a certain energy about it that made him think this structure was not of natural origin. Perhaps it was a forgotten ruin, a remnant of an ancient civilization, or something more mysterious entirely.

As Finn drew closer, he noticed a large set of double doors at the base of the structure. They were partially open, though the gap was narrow. The stone around the entrance was cracked, and some of the dust from the desert had settled within the cracks, evidence that no one had passed through here in a long time. Despite the signs of age and neglect, there was a strange vitality to the place, as though it were waiting for something—or someone.

A low, almost imperceptible hum came from inside the building, reverberating through the sand. It was faint but undeniable, like a heartbeat that pulsed from deep within the structure. It sent a shiver down Finn's spine, both eerie and intriguing. This could be a dungeon, but it was unlike anything he had encountered before. Something about the energy here felt different, ancient, almost alive.

Taking a deep breath, Finn stepped forward. His feet disturbed the sand as he crossed the threshold, and immediately, the atmosphere shifted. The air grew still, heavy with an unseen weight. The doors creaked softly as they swayed open further, as though inviting him in.
