Chapter 1 - Discovering the Depths(1)

'Your teacher is so boring, should we get her to stop?' Amelia whispered into Kyan's ear.

'No, we have to scale through this boring class, I need it' he replied out loud, disrupting the entire class.

Realizing his acute mistake, his jaw dropped, he knew Miss Mia and what she was capable of doing.

Tears formed in his eyes as he watched the teacher walk up to him.

'Did I hear you say "Boring", Talen?' the teacher asked with a frown.

With a tensed body, Kyan tried to stand to his feet but was sent back by his teacher's heavy hand.

'You don't stand while I am talking, it's part of good class manners' Miss Mia warned.

'I thought people preferred the 'stand and bow' to the 'sit and look up', ugh!' Amelia said to Kyan again.

'Haven't you gotten me into enough trouble already?' he muttered loudly.

'Are you saying something Talen?' Miss Mia asked with gritted teeth.

'No, Miss Mia, he isn't talking to your wobbly self ' Amelia uttered into Kyan's ear, getting him more frustrated.

'Do you mind!' Kyan yelled at her but...

He was the only one with the understanding that he was speaking to an existing being.

Realizing again, that he has acted foolishly, he turned to face his teacher's expression.

'Is there something that you are hiding, Talen? Or should I call your parents?' The teacher asked, raising Kyan to his feet.

'I am a bit tensed Miss Mia, I didn't sleep all night cause I had to prepare for today's test, I am really sorry for the disruption I caused' Kyan said and bowed slowly.

'Well, Talen, you are a good boy, so I forgive you, never let this happen again, do you understand?' the teacher said and walked to her desk.

'Yes, Miss Mia!'

He was about to sit when he heard the whole class laughing.

In curiosity, he scanned the class with his eyes and to his surprise, he saw Amelia floating over the teacher's head.

Miss Mia was looking like a nerd, her cloth had been transformed into a full rag.

Kyan signalled to Amelia in embarrassment.

'Why did you use your magic?' he asked with a tone lower than a whisper.

'You, Kyan Talen, make me sick, what's the fun in having magic that can't be used the way you want?' Amelia said nonchalantly.

'Class dismissed!' The teacher yelled in embarrassment and in a few seconds, the class was deserted.

'Your attitude won't be tolerated, I am going to report you to Granny once we get home' Kyan threatened.

'But that means Ralph will get a hold of this and that will be a lot of trouble, I don't want to go back to the depths, there are a lot of bullies there' Amelia said sadly.

'Why do you hate the depths, you seem powerful to me, who can hurt you there?' Kyan asked curiously as he mounted his bicycle.

'No matter how powerful anyone can be in the Depths, there is always a superior' Amelia replied.

'No matter how powerful anyone can be? Are you serious?'

'Does it sound like a joke to you?'

'But, what of the most powerful beast in the Depths?'

A pin drop silence emerged between them and it could have been more awkward if not for the sound of racing cars on the street.

'Why did you stop?' Kyan asked.

'No being is allowed to speak his name... except the ones that come from his clan'

'So I can't say Bat...

He was interrupted by a slap from Amelia that landed hotly on his cheek.

'Never speak his name, Death is the only cure for a new life, because everything that will ever happen to you will be doom' Amelia warned.

'You know you could have just said that. The slap hurts' he said as he alighted from his bicycle.

'I can smell Ralph, he is somewhere close' Amelia said, sniffing through the air.

Kyan rolled his eyes indifferently as he walked into the house.

'Welcome home Kyan' Granny's scary voice welcomed him.

Startled, he scanned the room in search of his grandmother, but he could only see the water spirit Ralph.

'Have you forgotten that I also transmit voices, she is in the study' the water spirit said and disappeared.

Seconds later, Amelia appeared.

'Ralph was here, right?' she said to herself and Kyan walked towards the study.

'Granny, am back' he informed as he stepped into the study.

'I heard ur voice Amelia, so Kyan, I know that you've arrived' Granny said with a smile.

'Granny, I and Amelia were discussing about the depths and then she told me that...

'You should never speak the name of the most powerful being in the death, for only death is the cure?' Granny spouted with a victorious smile.

Slowly and surprised, Kyan nodded.

'I can hear from a far distance Kyan, do not forget' Granny said and rocked her chair.

'But Granny why can't his name be mentioned?' he asked.

'Legend says that only his true blood can call his name' Granny said.

'And who is his true blood, granny?' Kyan asked curiously, focusing all his attention on his grandmother.

'Nobody knows Kyan, nobody knows' Granny said as she stood from her chair and walked to a shelf, scattering the whole shelf in quick pace, she finally stopped and sighed.

'Found what you are looking for granny?' Kyan asked with a lot of concern.

'Don't be tense Kyan, I am only doing this for you, and after this I hope you can understand and maybe focus more on your life ' Granny said as she presented the medium- sized box to him.

He reluctantly accepted it as he was really confused by her words.

She signaled to him to leave with a smile and she went back to her chair.

'Whatever' he muttered as he walked out of the study.

He wasn't far from the study when he heard his granny laughing, and Ralph?

He too could be heard loud and clear.

Whatever caused the laughter did not bother him, what was truly on his mind was the content in the bookand to his surprise, all he understood out of all the writing on the box was "depths" and that was because it was written in English.
