The staircase seemed endless, spiraling down into an abyss that grew darker and colder with each step. The faint whispers transformed into a chorus of agonized cries, echoing off unseen walls. The air was heavy, oppressive, pressing against Rai's chest like an invisible weight.
"How deep does this go?" Rai asked, his voice breaking the eerie silence between them.
Tenzai glanced back briefly, his expression grim. "Deep enough to hide something no one was meant to find."
The walls surrounding them shifted unnaturally, as if alive, pulsing with veins of crimson light. Rai kept his bow ready, scanning for any sign of movement. The oppressive aura seemed to grow stronger with every step, gnawing at his resolve.
At last, the staircase ended, depositing them into a cavernous chamber that radiated pure malice. Black obelisks jutted out of the ground at odd angles, their surfaces inscribed with more of the glowing runes. At the center of the room was a massive stone altar, slick with a substance that glistened like fresh blood under the dim red light.
Rai's stomach churned. "What is this place?"
Tenzai stepped forward cautiously, his blade drawn. "A site of sacrifice. Whoever controlled this place wasn't just dealing in death—they were feeding something."
Before Rai could respond, a low growl rumbled through the chamber, vibrating the very ground beneath their feet. From the shadows emerged a creature unlike anything Rai had ever seen. It stood on two legs, its hunched form covered in matted black fur. Its elongated snout revealed jagged teeth, and its yellow eyes glowed with predatory malice.
"A wolf-man," Tenzai muttered, his grip tightening on his sword. "Be ready. They're faster and stronger than anything we've faced before."
The creature snarled, its claws scraping against the stone floor as it advanced. Rai instinctively loosed an arrow, aiming for its chest. The arrow struck, but the wolf-man barely flinched. Instead, it roared in fury and lunged toward him.
Tenzai intercepted the attack, his blade clashing against the creature's claws in a shower of sparks. "Rai, aim for the eyes!" he shouted, his voice strained as he struggled to hold his ground.
Rai nocked another arrow, his hands trembling slightly. He took a deep breath, steadying his aim before releasing. The arrow sailed through the air, striking the wolf-man directly in one glowing eye.
The beast howled in agony, staggering backward as black ichor poured from its wound. Seizing the opportunity, Tenzai delivered a swift slash to its exposed flank, drawing another pained roar.
But the wolf-man wasn't finished. It lashed out with its claws, forcing Tenzai to leap back to avoid the deadly strike. The creature's movements grew more erratic, its remaining eye fixed on Rai with murderous intent.
"It's coming for me!" Rai called out, his voice tinged with panic.
"Keep it distracted!" Tenzai ordered, circling around the creature.
Rai dashed to the side, loosing arrow after arrow to keep the wolf-man's attention. Each shot chipped away at its strength, but it was far from defeated. The beast charged, its powerful legs propelling it forward with terrifying speed.
Just as it closed the distance, Tenzai struck from behind, driving his blade deep into the creature's spine. The wolf-man let out one final, bloodcurdling howl before collapsing in a heap, its body convulsing briefly before going still.
Rai lowered his bow, his chest heaving as adrenaline coursed through his veins. "That... was too close."
Tenzai pulled his blade free, inspecting the ichor coating its edge. "These things are stronger than they should be. Someone—or something—has been enhancing them."
As the echoes of the battle faded, a new sound emerged—a deep, rhythmic pounding that seemed to emanate from the altar. The runes on the obelisks flared brighter, casting the room in an eerie red glow.
"What now?" Rai asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Tenzai pointed to the altar. "Whatever's been feeding on the sacrifices here... it's waking up."
A crack formed in the center of the altar, widening rapidly as the pounding grew louder. From the fissure emerged a massive claw, dripping with the same black ichor as the wolf-man. Rai's heart raced as the claw was followed by another, then a horned head with glowing red eyes.
The creature that emerged was gargantuan, its twisted form a horrifying amalgamation of beast and shadow. It let out a guttural roar, shaking the chamber and sending a wave of oppressive energy that forced Rai to his knees.
Tenzai stood his ground, his sword at the ready. "Rai, listen to me. This thing is beyond anything we've faced. If we don't destroy it now, it won't just kill us—it'll consume everything."
Rai forced himself to stand, drawing a deep, shaky breath. "Then we stop it. Together."
The monstrous entity lunged, its massive claws tearing through the air as Tenzai and Rai prepared to face the battle of their lives.
