Chereads / The Serpent's Kiss / Chapter 20 - Into the Abyss

Chapter 20 - Into the Abyss

Lila stood in the cold silence of the forest, the remnants of the stranger

present moment. She turned to him, her heart heavy, and found only concern in his gaze. He hadn't pressed her for an answer, but she could feel the weight of his silence—he was worried.

"I'm not giving in," she said again, more to herself than to him. Her voice was firm, but her heart still wavered. The serpent's presence inside her, coiled and restless, seemed to pulse in agreement, but she refused to let it dictate her every move. Not yet.

Lucian studied her for a moment, as though weighing her resolve. Then, he nodded, his expression softening. "I believe you. But this won't be easy. Whatever you choose, I'm with you."

Lila's chest tightened, a flicker of something raw and vulnerable in her chest. She hadn't realized until now just how much his support meant to her. She was no longer fighting this alone. And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough to keep her from falling.

But the serpent inside her—the ancient, restless power—would not be so easily quelled.

The forest around them seemed to shift, the trees swaying unnaturally, as though responding to some unseen force. The atmosphere felt thick with something dark, something malicious. Lila's instincts screamed at her to move, to run, but her feet remained rooted to the ground.

"What's happening?" Lucian's voice was tense, eyes scanning the shadows.

Lila's heart raced as she tried to make sense of the disturbance. She could feel it now, like an unseen weight pressing down on them. The serpent inside her stirred violently, its hunger growing. It wanted to escape, wanted to claim dominion over her completely.

And then, through the thickened air, a whisper reached her ears—low, like a hiss. But it wasn't the serpent's voice. It was someone else's.

"Lila…"

Her body froze, the voice so familiar yet distant. Her name slipped into her mind like a soft caress, but it was tinged with something darker. Something that didn't belong.

She turned toward the sound, her eyes narrowing in the shadows. "Who's there?"

A figure stepped out from between the trees, tall and cloaked in darkness. His features were hidden by the shadow of his hood, but Lila felt the weight of his gaze, the suffocating presence of the man who had been haunting her thoughts—the man who had caused all of this.

The man in black.

"You," Lila breathed, stepping back instinctively. The serpent inside her stirred again, sensing the presence of the one who had been her greatest enemy. "What do you want now?"

The man in black's lips curled into a smile, but there was nothing reassuring about it. It was a smile of someone who had already won.

"I've come to claim what is mine, Lila." His voice was cold, carrying an authority that seemed to resonate with the earth itself. "The serpent belongs to me, and so do you."

Lucian moved to stand protectively in front of Lila, his stance defensive, but the man in black simply raised a hand. The air around them seemed to warp, the pressure mounting, as though reality itself was bending under the weight of his power.

"Stay out of this, boy," the man in black said dismissively, his gaze never leaving Lila. "This isn't your fight."

But Lucian stood his ground. "I won't let you take her."

Lila's mind was a whirlwind. She had barely recovered from the confrontation with the serpent and now this—another threat, another game being played at her expense. She felt trapped, a pawn caught in a world of ancient forces and power struggles.

The man in black took a step closer, his eyes locked onto hers. There was something insidious in the way he looked at her, as though he could see past her defenses, past the walls she had so carefully built.

"You're conflicted, Lila," he said, his voice smooth, knowing. "You've felt the serpent's power, haven't you? You know what it can do for you. It's in your blood, in your soul. You were born to wield it."

Lila shook her head, her pulse racing. She wanted to step away, to escape, but the air around her felt heavy, as if the ground itself was holding her in place. The serpent inside her was becoming restless again, its hunger growing as it reacted to the presence of the man in black.

"You don't know anything about me," she said through gritted teeth. Her voice was hoarse, but she forced the words out. "I'm not your tool, and I'm not your weapon."

The man's eyes flickered with something dark, a flicker of amusement, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. "You think you have a choice? You think you can defy what you are? The serpent has chosen you, Lila. It has marked you, and now it's time for you to fulfill your true destiny."

Lila's hands clenched into fists at her sides. She could feel the serpent's power rising, its call so strong, but she fought it down. She wouldn't let it control her. Not now, not ever.

"I won't be your pawn," she said, her voice low and steady, despite the fear gnawing at her insides.

The man in black's smile twisted into something darker, more cruel. "Then you'll die with your pride intact." He snapped his fingers, and the air around them crackled with an otherworldly energy. The ground beneath their feet trembled as shadows seemed to reach out, curling and twisting, forming into shapes that moved like living things.

Lila's heart hammered in her chest, but she refused to back down. Lucian stepped closer to her, his hand gripping his sword tightly, ready to fight.

"Lucian," Lila whispered, her voice tight with resolve. "Get ready. We're not backing down."

The man in black's laughter echoed in the air, cold and hollow. "You don't understand, girl. This isn't a fight you can win. You are mine. And there's nothing you can do to stop it."

But Lila wasn't listening anymore. She wasn't just fighting for herself—she was fighting for her soul, for everything she believed in. The serpent inside her was a part of her, but it didn't control her. She would fight with everything she had.

With a roar, the man in black lunged forward, shadows twisting around him, but Lila was faster. She felt the serpent's magic flare within her, responding to the danger. Her hands glowed with an ethereal light as she summoned the power she had fought so hard to control.

Lucian charged at the man in black, sword drawn, but Lila's focus was on the serpent's magic, the force that flowed within her veins. She couldn't let it consume her—but she couldn't let it be used against her either.

The battle was just beginning.
